Whats up with this Dan?

I purchased a Dan (used and abused) to clean up the other day. Today I started stripping it down and found a 1/8th inch deep, 1/2 inch diameter round hole bored into the underside of the pump tube. Whats up with that? Anyone know?

Does it hold air overnight? I'm gonna guess someone tried to reseal it. They probably couldn't figure out how to get the valve out. Probably thinking it was like a new Benjamin and that it was a removable cartridge. So I bet he was trying to get behind it so he could pry it out. That would explain the scratches around the hole. So he either figured it out or gave up and sold to you. That's why I ask if it was holding air. Unless u bought it from someone that knew how to fix it.

It does hold air and shoots fine. Kind of scary having the tube compromised, right?

Nothing wrong with that. That's how the factory got the solder in there to solder the valve in place. Sheridan valves are soldered in place and can't be removed. It's not as noticeable on many Sheridans because the solder fills the hole flush with the outside of the tube.

Is there any indication someone heated the tube to try and remove the valve? If not, don't worry about it.

Yea I can't see it being a problem. I was gonna suggest what he just said to solder fill it. Just sand it flush of you don't get it nice and flush. The other option is to JBWeld it and smooth it out.

That's definitely the solder hole. If the gun is shooting fine, DON'T solder it. You could ruin the seals. J b weld it, if it bothers you.
There's more solder in there, so, it's more of a cosmetic issue than structural.

Thanks guys, the gun shoots fine and as long as you think its not an issue then I'm not worried about it at all. Its just nice to have people who know about this stuff so that I can ask and learn

I have ran into all kinds of crazy stuff after getting home with a vintage air gun but I'm yet to see that? People do all kinds of crazy stuff when trying to fix a vintage air gun. It's a good thing they stopped before they did any real damage to the valve or the tube. I bring tools, pellets-BB's and a flashlight to look at the bore when shopping and even then I walk before over paying. You just don't know until you get it home and play with it for awhile. I agree with the guys that suggested JBweld. Once you get it filled, sanded and painted you'll be the only one that knows except us. I hope it turns out to be a great shooter.

I feel the same way. As long as no one has messed with it and the valve is sweated in there air tight don't mess with it. If it bugs you touch it up with a black sharpie and put it back in the stock.
