.257 Coyote Gun to Be Shipped Shortly.

Just purchased a used 257 with a R&L shroud and a 27' barrel on a Condor frame. Gun has R&L special valve and hammer accessories for the 257 Caliber. I may take all the parts and put them in my Condor SS frame (not sure of this yet) but I will use a larger 53ci tank that I'm dip coating camo tomorrow. When I receive the shroud that will be dip coated also.

If I did not have to fight the 8-12mph+ winds, my .25 cal Condor would have been fine, plenty of power for head shot at a coyote, but when you can't hold on target you need to go to a heart/lung shot .... and although my 25 would probably do it, I don't want to take that chance.

I will be getting some 80 ish gr slugs for this gun and I'm hoping for 5 solid good shots at ~950 fps with a normal tank ... I think my 53ci tank may give me maybe 8-10 solid shots ...... more than enough for "Big game" ....... including pig !

The guys primed the aluminum tank to get ready for a camo dipping tomorrow. I'm going to use a generic camo I think, unless we have something else left over. I will do the shroud the same color, so it should look cool. The important thing is the multi coats of protective flat clear so the film coating does not rub off.

The photo was taken in a florescent light paint booth, so the color is way, way off !

Later in the Day: Told my guys not to dip as I forgot about the spin Lock Valve and I need to register the bottom of the tank so dipping is set up correctly.

Gun is just shipped, so did the Lyman mold and the Lee sizing die ... two separate packages. UPS and FexEx would not ship the gun ... What a PITA, had to be USPS Priority ...I'm at war with USPS in my area, I have tracking #'s and will follow like a hawk

I'm looking forward to getting it and making it to my liking. I was planning on 80gr HP's but with the R&L Extreme valve I'm getting Doug suggested I go with around 70gr slugs ... so that is what I'll order. 68-70 gr HP's !

I don't see myself casting my own right now. The only cast 257 ammo maker I know of is Richard Porter of Accurate Bigbore Airgun Ammo. I will order some from him tomorrow. I actually don't see me ever shooting lots and tots of shots from this gun. I bet you for the life of the gun it will shoot less than 500 shots. It will be a very specialized gun

I'm getting it just for larger game with a 68-72gr slug for Yotes and Pigs. Once this gun is sighted in with that slug I plan on using that slug and that slug only. I will try to get a good velocity (875-950 fps) with that slug weight and then that is it.

I'm so impatient I went and ordered 69 gr HP bullets before I have gotten the barrel. I just hope I got the right size for an R&L .257 barrel. ... I'm NOT the tinkering type at all, I want it work and I don't want to try 5 different bullet sizes and bla, bla ,bla.When I tell you I have no patience with stuff I mean it.

I told RJ to give me the size he thinks is the best even though I ordered .2573. I get the gun on Friday and I'm assuming bullets will be sent out around then too

I truly admire the guys that can tinker with stuff .. I was making some QB78 modded guns but those days are over I think ...... way to much of a PITA ----- I made three pretty good guns, but for me doing the mods is not fun, it is work.

I'm finishing up my 257 !

I bought the sling today, and will take off the Wokguard15 MKII on my Condor SS  and the Hogue grip and install it on this one ... I have a new Wokguard15 MKII coming and another Hogue grip too. When I'm through I'll take pictures and take her out to the range on Sunday..

This is a pretty mean gun for sure ! I put a decal on the barrel too ...NCFOM !  You have got to know what that stands for !

She has everything set, ready to go. The fill tank read 3000psi, the bottle tank read 2700psi (I just put a new gauge in, so it could be that, may be binding as I screwed it on extremely tight ?

I sized 12 bullets from .2585 down to .257 (sizing die size) .. I will shoot a few over the chrono tomorrow and at a 20 yard steal splash plate target to get a sight setting. I have no idea what the velocity is, she is set at 6/0 .. don't know if I should back her off one revolution or not ? I did the the best I can do with never shooting a 257 and knowing very little about them except from what I have read from Tofazfou and my few conversations with Doug. I'm HOPING I can get a respectable velocity and don't have to do a bunch of crazy stuff to get in the mid 900fps for about 5 good consistent shots shooting 69-72gr Lyman 257420 slugs. The trigger on this gun is very nice no creep, grind or anything.

The Logo on the side of the barrel is the one that reads "NCFOM" in burgundy red with dark red blood dripping down the letters.

Last Afternoon Update for Today 8-6-16 ;- )

Went out after filling tank 3200+ and lowering the PW to 5/0 Got 933, 925, 915, 907 and 897 fps. Tomorrow I'm lowering the PW again (4/0) to reach the point where the hammer spring is just a touch shy on power to open the valve fully till after maybe two shots, and that way maybe start a bell curve for hopefully 5 shots. Looking for an average of 915 ish.

Much is dependent on hammer strike force on the valve and the initial PSI in the tank

Morning Update 8-7-16 :

Set the power wheel to 4/0 and not much difference, setting to 3/0 and not enough force for power, just evens the shot string out a bit.

I will reset the PW at 5/0 and buy a 4500psi CF tank from China, same thread size as a Condor so it will be an change the valve kind of thing and the tank is the same size as the standard condor tank.

I think at 3000-3400 psi I can get a good solid 5 shots in the 915-925 area .. after all I'm almost there now. I could try my 53ci tank, but it is big and it is heavy

Man alive, this caliber hits like a ton of bricks. Going to check on CF tanks now, and will probably order one this week. They are about $160.00 including shipping for the 4500psi, 500 cc, black tank  60 mm (2.36") dia, 310mm(12.2") Long This is a DOT tank !

Later in the day Update:

When I got hot on something I get hot on it for sure. Been texting Doug and may change stuff around a bit. You know x amount of energy using a big wide bullet is one thing, a great big powerful slap that same energy using a small heavy high SD bullet is something else ... this sucker really penetrates and its velocity and energy just keep on going !   I don't think there is a animal that air gunners shoot that this bullet will not penetrate at reasonable ranges !

I would have no reservations on a medium pig head shot. Of course Yotes are dead where they stand, as are Raccoons, Possum Nutria. Beaver, Porcupine, Bobcat and  I could go on, for many of these animals a 257 is overkill IMHO, especially when driven even at  ~915 fps ..... most of the guys are 50+ fps more than this ....50 fps more means a lot in downrange power because of the BC of this bullet. This is not your dad's Benjamin pump for sure !!!! (I'm not putting down the Benjamin pump as it is one of my faves, but you understand)

Just today shooting at a splash plate at 25 yards (shot at 25 yards just to make sure I hit the center of the plate every time... this is not the time for thinking "I wonder where that shot went"!)

The energy was enough at times to lift the splash plate (12x12x1/4 thick) a bit off the desert floor and send bullet fragments zinging in the air. I made sure when setting up there were no dwellings or roads that I could see in the distance ... I was out in the boonies. This thing is powerful !

Just got through texting Doug and I'm trying out one of his 257 valves for this gun on Friday. We will see how she does with a standard tank, and if I need a CF tank ! Just give me 5 good shots with a aluminum tank ... and I'm golden with a carbon tank !
