I jumped on the last sale and am super happy with the RWS 34P. It is very accurate and does not seem to be hold sensitive or to pellet picky. If you're on the fence about this deal just DO IT!!

I bought one at the last sale. SUPER NICE KIT. They are shipped too dry. This has been mentioned by several guys. I applied RWS spring lube and RWS chamber lube. It made it shoot perfect. They would not ship to Illinois so I had it sent to a guy in a neighboring state.
I'm shooting with the glow iron sights. I used the scope on a vintage pistol.
This has got to be the best deal around. Nobody else will price match it. That's great news for consumers.
Be sure and buy the RWS lubes.

Cabelas is unfortunately adopting Walmart policies for some reason.  They both won't ship airguns to like 10 states even though there are no AG laws in those states outside of a few cities.

Christos, I watched a review on youtube by airgun web tv and he said @ 10yds (RWS Super Dome 8.3gr) @ 20yds (Beeman Kodiak 10.2gr).

This might be a good starting point.

My Cabelas 34p likes tight fit pellets; CPL, CPHP, FTTS in 4.52mm.; no droop, didn't need the supplied droop mount.

At 30 yds mine absolutely stacks Crosman 10.5 dome that come in a box, and RWS Supermag 9.3 wadcutters are about the same.  Mine will shoot dime to nickel sized groups at 30 yds with five or six others as well.

tsakula,
RWS sells the chamber oil with a super skinney long applicator tip. This is required to reach the chamber opening. It is important to practice squeezing the bottle to get one drop out of the tip. Owners manual says too much is bad.

Uuuhh, lemme add something here. Last weekend I used the RWS chamber oil. Dropped three drops into the chamber hole letting them clear the hole between each drop. I cocked the gun so that the piston was all the way down. Let it sit overnight like that (cocked). Next morning I cycled the action a few times (mine has the ability to uncock if you hold the safety in the off position). I then took one shot and it went off like a .22 magnum shell!! Scared the you-know-what out me. I went back inside the house so no one would see me. I contacted Hector Medina as we had been discussing this gun (it's my Diana 34 100 Jahre one) and he promptly wrote back "DO NOT DO THAT AGAIN!!  :-\

I don't know the difference between the silicone oil (which technically should not diesel) and the RWS "chamber oil", but the result for me was having to disassemble the gun for a thorough cleaning and piston seal inspection.

Just a little warning for ya before you do some potential damage.

Are you sure you had loaded a pellet and didn't dry fire it?
Does the RWS manual recommend 3 drops?  I don't remember what my RWS manuals state, but I read years ago posts from a couple of tuners saying we should not be using the RWS chamber oil, so I have never used it.

Why leave the gun cocked for so long?  That in itself is a risk.  It can weaken the spring and reduce muzzle velocity.  I never leave mine cocked for more than an hour or 2.  I would put the 34 through the Chrono to make sure it's shooting at the power level it's supposed to.

No, I definitely did not dry fire it. First of all, I know better than to do that. Second, I had fired into a piece of 3/8" plywood and it definitely hit with an almighty THWACK. I waited until well after the police had circled the block a few times and went and checked the plywood. The pellet had gone through it.

My bottle of RWS Air Chamber Oil states to put 2 drops directly into the chamber (yeah, I put three, but I don't think that would have done it).

The email I received from Hector stated the proper procedure for oiling the chamber.

Specifically, he states in the email

Putting oil into compression chambers is an art.
I won't go into details here, but consider:
1.-  Dianas have the transfer port drilled at an angle. If you put oil into  the gun through the port with the gun standing up, the oil will end up poodling in the hole in the seal.
2.- If the rifle is not actioned a few times before setting out to rest, then the oil has no chance of going to where it needs to go.
3.-If excess oil is not allowed to flow OUT through the muzzle by standing the gun downwards, then the oil will stay where it shouldn't be.

Step number three is the part that I didn't do.

I honestly don't think that letting it sit cocked overnight is an extreme amount of time. Weeks, months, yes, but seriously, overnight? Come on.

Those instructions on the oil package (pic above) could be a throwback to when they used leather seals. In that case, it would make sense (something I didn't have when I did what I did). Modern synth seals only need lube behind the seal face.

I honestly don't know what I was thinking. It could be all for the better as I have since stripped the gun and I'm waiting for a new piston seal. The old one had some marks on it that Hector believes are from the initial assembly (not from dieseling). There are three of these marks at different locations around the seal.

I agree with you, that mark on the seal is probably from the initial installation.  Like you said, you got the entire rifle torn down, cleaned, lubed and once you install the new seal and re-assemble your rifle will shoot nicer than it did before so nothing really lost except a little time and inconvenience  :)

BTW.... I've been resisting that Cabelas deal for a long time but I think I'm finally reaching my breaking point.  Just checked and  the .177 is in fact back in stock.......

Glad you asked that Tom. I was afraid someone might make that assumption.

Although Hector laid out the procedure, at the end of the email he said "don't do that again!".

In hindsight I don't see a reason to oil them from the port side. Lubing/grease from behind the seal toward and over the spring is fine. Make sure your new gun needs it first though.

Regarding oil, maintenance, etc. :
RWS/Umarex are oriented toward marketing and sales. (But I do thank them, and Cabelas, for making this great deal available to so many of us.) Hence, from the  RWS Operation Manual:
Quote
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
WORKING PARTS: The working parts, like piston and mainspring
require very little lubrication. Two (2) drops of RWS Chamber Lube every
1000 shots will suffice. It is easily applied through the compression
chamber port with a 3 1/2" applicator needle (See Figures 8a & 8b). The
wearing surfaces at the barrel hinge, the cocking arm and the trigger
mechanism should be lubricated every 1000 shots with RWS Spring
Cylinder Oil. (See Fig. 9) Mainsprings should be oiled every 1000 shots
with six (6) drops of RWS Spring Cylinder Oil (See Figures 10a and 10b).
Remember, a little is good Ė a lot is not better.

Diana, however, is focused on engineering and manufacturing. And we see:
Quote
Care and maintenance

Care is very simple. The working parts, like piston and main-spring, need no lubrication.
...
The wearing surfaces should be lubricated with an acid free gun oil. ...
[Disclaimer: I'm pretty new to airgunning. ("A man has to know his limitations." --D.H.) so I'm only quoting sources.]

The Diana website, diana-airguns.de, is good; almost all documents are multi-lingual. Best way I've found to use it, is via Google. Just append site:diana-airguns.de to your (list of) search term(s).

It's nice to see the joint efforts by DIANA, UMAREX and CABELA's panning out.

In essence the idea was to offer a reasonable quality alternative to other brands. And to bring in new shooters. And this thread proves that there are more than a few new shooters trying a DIANA made airgun!

So, first of all, Welcome to the DIANA family! DIANA has been in business for about 130 years and the new era (Company changed hands a few years ago)  seems to be coming along nicely.
Whether your 34 is branded RWS, or DIANA, it is the same gun, and you have the full support of both companies. Plus the support of the retailer, if need be.

As regards care of a new gun:
UMAREX's specs call for a gun shipped without any lubes. This is because, in their experience (and mine), lubing causes more problems and harm than good. And some lubes degrade with temperatures/humidities as those experienced in a maritime container. Pyramyd Air and AoA have different specs for their imports, so to each his own.
Unless you are experienced at tearing down airguns and have a spring compressor, I would strongly disadvise tearing a new gun down.

IF it honks like a goose, then a LITTLE lube into the spring/rear of the piston maybe a good idea, but little MEANS little.

I have not tested the "Tune in a bottle" so I cannot advise nor disadvise it, but I CAN tell you that there are, at least THREE different compounds that are called "Silicone Oil" and that only ONE of them is suitable for airguns. Problem being that no one tells the customers what compound they are using in their formulation. So, having a generic "Silicone Oil" at hand is not a guarantee that you can use it in your new airgun.

Furthermore, the old RWS maintenance kits were, and are, prepared thinking of all the range of guns imported by UMAREX, not all of them DIANA's.

DIANA's website instructions are valid most of the time (UMAREX branded guns require a little bit of different care for the reasons explained above).
The DIANA piston seal is a self-lubing/self-healing compound that has stood the test of time and  has proven to be as good, if not much better than ANY other seal in the market, regardless of manufacturer or seller.

The ONE thing I REALLY disadvise is to put chamber oil down the transfer port. It is simply a very difficult process to control precisely, and in the end you will end with oil where you do NOT want it (if what you want is an AIR gun, if you want a diesel gun, then that is different).

Personally I ONLY use Ultimox grease and Super Lube, yes they are expensive, but they are a guarantee of proper functioning. In the realm of ultra-tuned FT guns, some of them run on dry graphite, or MoS2 powder, or a mixture of both. But this is a little bit specialized and not for the ordinary airgunner.

More than 90% of the shooters will be very happy following DIANA's recommendations.

Anyway, hope everyone has fun with their new guns. And in the event that something is not completely right, TALK to your RETAILER FIRST, then he will direct you to whatever course of action is appropriate. IF the retailer tells you to send the gun back, do so. If the retailer tells you to send the gun to the wholesaler (as is highly probable in this case), then call UMAREX, explain what is going on and give them the chance to make it good.

Nobody's Perfect 100% of the time, so just go with the flow.

Again, thanks and welcome once again to the DIANA family!

HM

Well, I've been looking at this deal for a long time.  Several times it came and went and I always managed to resist hitting the "order" button.  However I finally caved and just ordered one  :)   I know I didn't really "need it" but I just really wanted it.  I love my .22 cal 34P so now I have a matched set  :)
I feel much better now  :)

Jeff, I was pretty sure you were going to give in when I saw this thread reappear on the 34P :)  I am sorry to see that I was right.

I am pretty sure I have said this a couple of times before - the best cure for your airgun addiction would be to get hypnotized, or cancel your GTA account ;D   I would say go with #1 (hypnosis works for most shopaholics and for other addictions, really) because I don't want to see you go, or you having to buy another house or a big storage unit just to store all your guns  :)

Hector my friend, you are correct, but the Diana/Umarex/Cabelas venture and lower 34 pricing is not only attractive to those new to the airgun sport, but also to some of the experienced airgunners who are bargain hunters and recognize that the 34 is a great spring gun that offers a lot of value.

As for me I am a hair away from pulling the trigger on it.  The only thing keeping me from doing it is that I am old school and not a big fan of synthetic stocks.  Besides, I still enjoy the 34K .20 Premium I got from your groupbuy that shoots great.  I just love the high grade wood on it and prefer wood stocks in general.  I also have Gene's old Diana 36 .177 which has a great stock with checkering and is just a better dressed 34.

Harry

PS.
Time for us to see Mr. Levine in Carmel soon ;)

Next, you're gonna tell Jeff he should go to meetings (and become a Friend of Harry**).  :)  Jeff, you did well to hold off, for so long, from this (repeated 3-4 times since August) deal. I got mine on the (first) August deal, and it quickly became my favorite (over a paltry crew of Crosman F4, Benj Titan NP, Norica BE & 2400KT). ... until that RWS 48 deal in mid-November (thanks again, Matthew!) Still, I bought a 2nd 34P (arrived yesterday) as a spare/backup/future gift.

Harry, regarding the synthetic stock & the 34, I totally agree (like wearing a nice suit and sneakers). Back in May, after resisting the $178 deal @Walmart on the (wood) 34 combo several times, I finally relented, and guess what. Walmart would NOT ship to me ... in friggin' New Hampshire!! Major glitch, but I couldn't get anyone there to fix it. Worse yet, they would have shipped it to Massachusetts (Harvard Square 02138, no less) (also a major glitch on walmart.com [since "fixed"--but could have got them sued])

Some day, maybe, I'll find a good deal on a nice wood stock for the 34(P) ...

I know I am going to be accused of being an enabler here (as if I really cared, ROFL!) but, one more thing to consider:

UMAREX has the Premium wooden stocks, don't know the current prices, but last I heard, users could buy those stocks for about $200.

So, you get the gun, get the stock, so far outlay is $350; when you want to show off your girl you dress it in her sexy outfit, when you want to have a go with her, you dress her in the synthetic.

;-)

A 34 is a 34 is a 34, it will interchange between stocks. And if you want to get REALLY creative, you can even Accraglass bed the Premium stock and have a superb shooter.

Dunno, so many possibilities . . .  LOL!

@Harry.-  Yes, I recognize that airgunners are suckers for rebates and sales and good price offers. We are the kind of people that can be driven to bankruptcy saving on stuff, LOL!
But I am most encouraged by the number of posters in this thread that start with: "I am sort of new to airgunning, but . . . ."

David has been doing our stuff even long distance, as we are now in Maryland . . .  LOL!  Superb guy!

To all, keep well and shoot straight!

The weird thing that put me off was that my local Cabelas refuses to sell the RWS brand rifles in the store. They have RWS pellets and they have the the Impact max on the shelves, right next to every Gamo model and most Benjamin models. I guess I should have tried to mail order it before Clem told them about Massachusetts.

The thing that's even worse is that they would have sold 3 the day I was buying, because 2 guys who were PB guys asked me if I knew anything about pellet rifles. I had to send them home with Benji NP elite setups.

I am trying soooo hard to not hit the "buy" button on a 34P. The only thing stopping me right now is my devotion to rebuilding my D34 Jubilaum (many thanks to Hector for his advice in this endeavour).

I know I could just spend the $150 right now, but as soon as I do, an original Diana rear peep will show up somewhere. That's the way my luck runs.

Well I received my 34P on Tuesday. Have maybe 75 to 100 rounds thru it. Today while  I was shooting it the reticle fell and is now laying in the bottom of the scope. I called customer service and got the Umarex Product RETURN FORM via email. I will be shipping back the scope tomorrow. I didn't care for the scope to began with very lower end model. I've already ordered a Hawke Vantage 2-7X32 AO Mil Dot. Love the 34P its a KEEPER for sure.

Looks like the model on sale is being replaced with a newer one??? (For $335)

At any rate, I'd prefer the "sale model" with iron sights at less than half the price.

I think John is correct.. the .177 on "sale" for 149.99 is not the same as the .22 regular priced rifle.  In the "Select Cal/Gauge" box click on the .22 and you'll see it's a different version than the .177   But for $149 who cares, not me  :)

Just got the shipping email a few minutes ago.  Ordered it last night, shipped out today and scheduled for delivery on the 30th  :)

Cabela's has the wrong picture for the .22. That is the 34P Pro Compact which is only available in .177. I have the 34P in .177 & .22 and want the Pro Compact next. If it was not for the $149 Cabela's deal I would not have discovered the 34 series.

That's what it's all about - having fun.  It's a hobby after all and it's supposed to be fun.  I think I am going to start installing "LCD"s on my Springers so that I can shoot them more in the backyard.  Getting tired of the PCP's a little again, plus they keep breaking.  It's a cycle.  I 'll shoot the springers for a while and then go back to PCP's again, and around we go  ;D

Sir you hit the nail on the head "It's a hobby after all and it's supposed to be fun"! I love my PCP's, but I find that 95% of the time when I find myself being frustrated, I am shooting a PCP and not a springer!  With the springers fun is just a tin of pellets away.

I'm actually into the same cycle Harry.....  Love my PCP's but lately I find myself getting back to spending more time shooting my springers.  Guess that's why I'm so excited about getting this new RWS 34  :)   Squirrel and rabbit season runs until the end of February here so I think I'll get it sighted in and start pointing it at whatever nutters and bunnies I can find  :)

Thank you for letting us know how and why the Cabela's RWS 34P special came to be. Some of us thought they may be closing out that model with the $149 price. I am not new to shooting but New to Diana. After the 34P in .177, I bought the 34P in .22. I love this product and looking and waiting for a 34 Pro Compact special down the road. Thanks Again Hector.

I find myself coaching a friend on his first springer purchase. He's between the 34 and Gamo CFR Whisper at this point, but a question has come up.

Some have noted the pictured items are different in the two calibers. If you buy the .177 (on sale), do you get the regular 34P or the 34P Pro Compact? (I saw this was sort of answered already, but just need to be sure.)

Others who have received the rifle can confirm, but my understanding is that it is the standard 34P (synthetic stock), not the compact. To me, the standard model is preferable due to having open sights as well as a dovetail for the scope. The compact doesn't have open sights, by looking at the photos.

PS: The 34P/.177 also includes a basic 4X scope and a good quality mount with droop compensation, items not included with the Compact.

The steal of a deal is in fact for the rws 34p.
I prefer having the open sights since I am shooting indoors at less than 5 yards. I have to break in it somehow.
Mine is currently shooting diablo basic 7.0 gr. With the best accuracy. But this is at less than 5 yards so I should be able to cut playing cards with not much effort. Warmer weather will allow me to go outside.
I kind of want a second one. I admire the craftsmanship of these RWS/Diana air rifles.

Mine arrived today and I put about 50 shots thru it with Crosman 10.5 brown box pellets. Dead on in my short indoor range with the open sights. No honk or squeak, the ball detent is pretty stiff but I'm sure it will limber up.

Got mine last week. It is the 34P, NOT the compact. This thing is great. I immediately tore it down, honed, put an ARH OS kit in it with a Krytox lube and its shoots better than me by far. I'm using the CPHP pellets and for now the supplied scope which will be upgraded in short order.

Did you fire it before tuning? Mine was great right out of the box...the T06 trigger feels like 2lbs with a clean predictable break. I have the RWS 4X32AO "freebie" scope from a prior Diana purchase and I find it holds up well on a Hatsan 24 FPE+ rifle....not bad for a freebie if you don't need more than 4X. So far, I'm sticking with the open sights for the range that I'm currently limited to, this rifle is more accurate than my old eyes... ::)

I didn’t fire it before I took it apart. Probably not the smartest on my part, but I already decided on the “tune” before I bought it. I did find the factory piston seal had a sizable gouge in it that left a small gap against the side of the compression chamber, so that aspect of replacing the parts worked in my favor.

The 34 just arrived :)     Didn't fire it yet, just to darn cold outside, but unboxed it and checked it all out and very happy with it.   Bluing is very nice, weight and balance are nice, feels very comfortable to shoulder and points nicely.  The scope seems decent with a nice crisp, clear image and reticle and the scope mount will serve it's purpose well.   All in all I'm thrilled with this rifle and the great sale offered by Cabelas.  :)

Plan on cleaning the barrel and mounting the scope later tonight and will test it out in the backyard range in the next few days.

I finally pulled the trigger on this on Tuesday, and being a 2month newbie to air rifles, i'm excited to get a real quality one vs the 2 budget guns  i've purchased already. I received the email from Cabela's confirming the order, but haven't received a shipping notice yet. And looking at the website today, it appears as though the .177 is outta stock. Hope i get my shipping notice soon!!!

That was pretty much my situation, six months ago, when I got my 34P. And, she's a sweetie--you're in for some nice surprises. Details? Nah, I don't want to spoil it. Let's just say, that up to now, you've just been using your hand. :) Do note that, at first, she might feel a little dry.

Don't wait for the shipping notification. On Cabela's site, bottom of page, YOUR ORDER >> Track your order. Probably because of their "Direct Shipping from the Manufacturer" on this, it doesn't mesh with their designed notification protocol. And, there's a one day lag between when Umarex shipped and when "Track your order" has a clue.

.177 Out of Stock ... you're right, but the same thing happened on 23Jan ... and (lucky for you), here we are. [If it's still OOS late tonight, I'll update the thread title (again!).]

Thanks for amping up my excitement! As for feeling "a little dry", what would be the correct course of action?  What type of lube would I use and are any special tools needed for the maintenance?

And thanks for the heads up on checking the Cabela's website.  It shows "Shipped".  Woooohooooo!!!

Who me an enabler? No way!  ;D
Actually I 've been trying to talk Jeff (Longislandhunter) out of buying more AG's for years!  :)

No, seriously $150 or $100+ less than the regular price for a fine German Diana Springer that is pretty accurate out of the box (and a tack driver with an ARH kit) is something I will always recommend, especially to all those frustrated with Crosman NP/NP2 and Hatsan springers trying to shoot better than 2" groups at 20yds.  You rarely see those kind of posts in the German gate.

Enjoy your 34 everyone!!  We 'll have good weather in a couple of days so get out there and shoot your German lady.

Yesterday got my 34 all cleaned up and installed a new 3x9x32 AO scope that I had hanging on the wall.  Looks good  :)
Still to cold for me to sit out in the backyard range but it's supposed to warm up in a day or so and then I'll get to doing some testing.

Harry, I have to admit that you have, many times over the years, helped me to control my addiction and I appreciate your assistance  :)  Of course I do succumb every once in a while and give in to my needs for an "airgun fix" but you've been a big help buddy  :)

I'm actually thinking about ordering a .25 cal   Gauntlet so I may need your intervention  :)

Anyway, love my sale priced 34 and can't wait to shoot it.

Well, I finally caved and drank the kool-aid this morning.  Shortly afterwards I was suffering from buyer's remorse and started thinking about emailing and asking them to cancel the order.  Then I thought I could just wait and see if the German craftsmanship is all it's hyped to be and if not, I could return it before using it.  I'm expecting to have to do some lubing, etc. but if it comes in and the blueing and/or fit and finish is mediocre I'll box it right up and send it back.  If it looks good I'll shoot it and if it's accurate I'll be glad I jumped on the bandwagon.

I think I am going to start installing "LCD"s on my Springers

Where would you get a good ldc for a springer? Most I've seen are most effective for Co2 or PCP's., and not so much so for a springer.

I have several springers that I'd love to ldc. I bought a couple of slip-ons from the dude on ebay, but not all that happy with them.

That's the dude. I even messaged with him via ebay. He sells the same ldc for both .22 and .177, so I asked him if they should not be differentially bored to suit the cal. of my gun. His reply was that it didn't matter. He talked like he knew his stuff, but I still wonder. The fit and finish is no where near what Mike at TKO does, and yeah, I had to replace those "sticking-out" grub screws. Seems like a small detail that he could have easily seen as "not quite polished enough" IYKWIM.

You have the link for that Youtube vid? I wanna see that again. I may have further comments on that as well.

Don't get me wrong.....They work, and are less expensive than a TKO, but in the future I'd rather go with a TKO of the proper barrel OD. Mike at TKO says his are not optimized nor necessarily effective for a springer, but I think they would still work as well as the ebay ones (and look a whole lot better as well). I had a long phone conversation with Mike about springer ldc's and his explanation went into Physics that went over even my aero-engineering head, so I trust what he says, and he is very forthcoming about saying that his product may not work for a springer. I like that sort of honesty, but I'd still take the chance on trying his next time.

What I'd really like to get is the Weihrauch 15 or 16mm silencers that Krale sells, but they can't sell them to us here in the USA.

If so, that one cracked me up. At the 11:45 mark he loses count of his three-shots-per-pellet sound check and cocks the gun. He then takes the gun inside to put on the moderator. When he comes back to shoot, at the 13:20 mark he smacks the cocked barrel and shakes himself up a bit. That means he was working on the muzzle end of a fully cocked rifle. Lost all credibility for me (even if there ever was any).

Not a very scientific eval if you ask me. Keep in mind also that there is the "perceived" sound of a springer from the shooters perspective. You hear a lot more going on than a bystander would.

Sound should also be checked downrange. Unfortunately all of my Buddies are smart enough not to go downrange for me and do that check. Go figure.

John and Jeff, thanks for the info.

I'm looking forward to seeing what German quality is all about.  I'm normally a wood stock guy but these synthetic stocks look nicer than the ones I've seen on a lot of other guns.  They look pretty solid.  Do they need to be filled with rags or whatnot like a lot of other synthetic stocks or are they solid enough to not need that?

I haven't shot this .177 34P yet but I'm not expecting any problems with resonating sound.  The synthetic stock on my .22 34P, one of my favorite hunting springers, is very solid.  The stock on this new .177 is styled a little differently than my .22 but it looks and feels just as solid.

Hey to all else and especially the OP, sorry for diverting the topic here.

I am still just a hairs breath away from going for this 34P deal, but I'm breaking in my Diana 34 that I just rebuilt, so not really seeing the need for a second. You do have me going though on that synth stock.

Randy, craftsmanship and bluing on all my Diana spring guns has been excellent.  Of course it's up to you to keep up with the maintenance, oiling and protecting the metal parts, barrel, etc. to retain the condition the gun arrived in.  Compared to the Crosman PCP's, Springers and CO2 guns that I own, the bluing and overall quality on the German guns is way better, almost night and day.  For $150 you are not going to get anything close in quality from Crosman, Gamo or other manufacturers.

I am not sure how much you expect for $150 or what you would be comparing it to, but if for example you get a Crosman Custom 2240/2300 for nearly $150 (like I did), you will quickly realize how inferior the quality and bluing are compared to any gun from RWS/Diana, or my 2 Disco's that cost more that have very average bluing compared to my Diana's deep bluing that has lasted for a decade or more now.  Most of my Crosman barrels need to be re-blued after a few short years.
I have another German CO2 rifle ($190 at the time) - the Hammerli 850 that is >10 years old and the bluing still looks like when I first got it.  Can't say the same with most of my other non-German guns.

Just got in from the first shooting session with my new 34.  I had mounted a "Hammers" 3x9x32 AO on it 2 days ago and cleaned the barrel with Goo-Gone. I usually wait 2 days for the loc-tite to dry so today I hit the backyard range for the initial shooting/sighting in session.  Long story short...... rifle shoots like a dream.  Nice smooth cocking and firing cycle, lock up is nice and tight and the trigger is just awesome.  It's so light and crisp and brakes so cleanly that I wont be messing with it at all.  The pivot point  is a little stiff but that will wear in with shooting.  As for accuracy..... so cold outside I only grabbed 2 pellets to try, CPHP's and CPL's and the rifle loves both pellets, giving me ragged hole groups at 30 yards.  I'm so glad I pulled the trigger on this sale, I love this gun :)

Will do a complete pellet testing session when the weather warms up but as of right now this rifle is ready to hunt  :)

I once saw a Chinese built Beeman break-barrel that a guy was selling, and while I didn't care for the dark finish on the wood I was impressed with the quality of the finish. What really impressed me was the blueing on the metal!  Deep blue-black, and smooth as a mirror.  I guess I'm hoping the metal on the 34 will be something like that but if not, I'm sure it will be better than my Titan or my Hatsan 95.

I was curious about the family background of the 34P ... and since it does have DIANA molded into the stock (rear) and the butt-plate**, I looked on Diana's web-site [diana-airguns.de]. And found nothing, until I fuzzied-up my searching a little, and discovered that the RWS 34P is actually a Diana Panther 31 !! See attachment #1 below; it's a two-page extract from the Diana catalog [first page is 34; second is P31]. The entire catalog can be downloaded from https://www.diana-airguns.de/fileadmin/Editoren/PDF-Downloads/Publkationen/Katalog-Dt-Eng-Russisch.pdf (https://www.diana-airguns.de/fileadmin/Editoren/PDF-Downloads/Publkationen/Katalog-Dt-Eng-Russisch.pdf).

The second attachment is a nice summary of the specifications for the full rifle product-line (also extracted from the catalog).

** Speaking of the butt-plate ... the top-rear, the smooth part above the top screw, definitely should be real rubber. [The scope you save will be your own.] Please pass this along, Hector. [my first mod; I'll kluge something]

Clem;

Depending on how the stock fits you, you could glue or screw a furniture rubber foot to the stock's heel.
If you use the heel into your shoulder cavity, get a flat one, if you use the heel above it, get a curved one.
You can get a square one and sand to the profile you want.
There are thousands of choices/options to personalize and make that gun fit YOU.
I do that when I wrap the stocks of my rifles with leather, but that is another story . . . LOL!

Usually stock moulds have useful runs of about 5-10,000 pieces, dunno where we are in this particular mold, and it does not make sense to spend thousands to alter a mould that is halfway through its useful life. Mold itself is worth tens of thousands.

Yes, I will pass it on, ;-)

Thanks for the feedback and hope the furniture foot bit helps you and the rest of the friends here.

Keep well and shoot straight!

Harry

I once saw a Chinese built Beeman break-barrel that a guy was selling, and while I didn't care for the dark finish on the wood I was impressed with the quality of the finish. What really impressed me was the blueing on the metal!  Deep blue-black, and smooth as a mirror.  I guess I'm hoping the metal on the 34 will be something like that but if not, I'm sure it will be better than my Titan or my Hatsan 95.

Beeman imposed their own specifications on guns from other manufacturers they put their name on.  They had to be higher quality and the Beeman brand demanded a higher price.  I am sure rich deep bluing and good wood finish were 2 of them.

Depending on how the stock fits you, ...
Hi Hector,
Thanks for the response. I'm afraid I was (a little?) too obtuse when introducing this "issue":
Quote
[UhClem:]Speaking of the butt-plate ... the top-rear, the smooth part above the top screw, definitely should be real rubber. [The scope you save will be your own.]
[Switching mode from cute to clinical ...] On the 34P, due to the material used for its "recoil pad", when you stand the rifle up and lean it against a wall, the very low coefficient of friction of this non-rubber material with any smooth floor has a strong tendency to slip. On (nice) wood floors (even my painted porch floor if morning-dew-damp), every other rifle, with rubber at that mating surface, can safely sustain a (typical) ~15deg angle. But, with the 34P, any (non-contact) disturbance/vibration (e.g. a door closing, or someone walking several feet away) will provide that tipping/slipping point.

It may even be helpful (sufficient?) to extend the current horizontal grooving upward through the (now smooth) heel. I'll probably experiment with that.

Another micro-refinement worth considering (on a subsequent mould) would be to eliminate the two sharp edges on the bottom of the fore-stock, where the cocking slot narrows. [Sure, a few passes with a file corrects this, but ... Is your name Franz, or FuManchu?]

I ordered mine Feb. 1 and got a confirmation from Cabela's, then got an update on Feb. 6 saying they would inform me when it ships. Both said it would ship directly from the manufacturer. Still nothing today so I called to check. The very pleasant customer service lady told me it shipped on Tuesday, but since shipping is 4-7 business days it may be here as late as Wednesday, February 13. She couldn't get me a tracking number because their drop-ship department is not open today. I asked if they could email it to me but she advised me to call back on Monday.

Historically Cabela's hasn't gotten much of my business because of their high prices, but now I can add slow shipping and bad communication to reasons for not shopping there. Unless there's a smoking deal on a product I want but don't really need! To their credit, I was able to quickly get a real person on the phone that was friendly and helpful.

Cabelas has always been slow when it comes to notification of shipment, at least with respect to the orders I've made, but if you simply log onto your account that information has always been up to date and available so I've never had any problems tracking the progress of my order.  When I ordered my 34P I knew it was being shipped directly from the manufacturer so I expected a longer delivery time, but wound up it was delivered within the time span they originally stated.   Also, I agree with you in that the service representatives are very friendly and helpful,, I've called them several times over the years with order issues and they've always done the right thing by me  :)  Anyway, just my personal experience.  Hope you like your new rifle as much as I love mine  :)

Jeff, did your 34 drop-ship from Umarex?  Did it have Umarex's address on the shipping label?

I have never had any problems with Cabela's Customer Service either.  The reps are always polite and try their best to help you or make up for their company's screw-ups.  I stopped shopping at Cabela's for 3 or 4 years but started up again.  That was because 80% of the .22LR ammo I ordered from them was damaged. They were one of the few online vendors that had some 22LR now and then during the 2012-2016 ammo shortage/panic, so I had no choice.  They do not put much packing material in their 1 or 2 size (fits all) shipping boxes, so the fragile rimfire boxes would get damaged, especially the plastic ones that cracked and all the rounds were loose at the bottom of the shipping box.  The paper ones would be crushed with some bullets bent on the casings, or displaced from the paper box.  Now I only order stuff from Cabela's that I know comes in well protected factory packaging so I don't have to rely on their packing skills, or Midway's for that matter who are worse than Cabela's.  Both of these companies made good on the damaged items like giving me credit towards next purchase, Cabelas $$, or send other items to make up for it, but that still didn't make their practices right, and they would never replace ammo with ammo for some reason, so I ended up getting other stuff from them I didn't need that bad.  Shipping can be slow or "normal" depending on the time of year, the number of specials, free shipping deals, etc. that they are running, and how busy their are. As long as my stuff arrives undamaged, I am happy, but I have to be selective and order factory packaged items or heavy-duty stuff that doesn't easily damage.

Like you Harry I'm selective in my purchases from Cabelas.  Most of my purchases from them are when they have really good pricing deals or when I've built up Cabelas Bucks from using their credit card.  Of course I'm always cruising the "Bargain Cave"....... they have some incredible deals in there sometimes.  :)

Here's a (usually) useful tip, for tracking purchases. FedEx & UPS have an option to Track By Reference. For example, on FedEx's main tracking page [https://www.fedex.com/en-us/tracking.html (https://www.fedex.com/en-us/tracking.html)], there is a Tab for TrkByRef. After selecting that, you enter your Reference Number, Destination Country/ZipCode, and approx. Ship Date.

This is most useful for vendors who are slow, or negligent, in sending you a tracking number. The Reference Number is (usually) your order # (which you typically know at Order Confirmation). Unfortunately, however, Cabela's does not seem to have conveyed the Order Number to Umarex's shipping dept. So it didn't work on these purchases.

Attached below are the FDX Shipment Facts from my recent 34P purchase (I ordered on Thurs, 17Jan19 4pmET). I don't know the source of the WHS131012, but it does work for TrkByRef. Interestingly, the PurchOrdNum (404383) also works; but it is NOT my Cabela's Order #.

As an aside: Cabela's is just like (almost) all the other BrickMortar businesses that try to pretend that they are competitive in the digital domain. The first indication of this is that they start sending you marketing e-mails before they've even sent you the Trk# for your first/recent purchase. That's dumb--it's like someone you've just been introduced to, asking to borrow money.

Mine took 6 days to get to the U.P. of Michigan.  Not bad.  When I first placed the order I got an acknowledgement email which said they would email me when it shipped.  Never got that, but about 5 days after the order I got another email from Cabela's which turned out to be the same email as the first one.  The next day the gun was here.

That is exactly the experience I had getting mine! I had mine in exactly 6 days from the day I ordered it and I have to say it is probably the best deal that I have gotten on an airgun. It's shoot straight as a laser and has awesome power. It is a very nice rifle and I would have paid the normal price for it had I known it was so nice. Thank you to the o p for posting this bargain in the first place!

This is my 3rd D34. While I generally prefer wood I'm impressed with this syn stock. Seems much more solid than other brands I've handled (Hatsan, Norica, Benjamin etc).

IMO, this is the best deal going for $150......German quality for a Gamo price. The bundled scope is of better quality than you usually expect for a "freebie".

Yes, but ...

I think there's been 3 separate "incarnations" of this deal. First time, OP was tulsatime, in mid-Aug18. Second, I don't recall who OP'd, was in mid-Oct18. Third, this one, (started) on 10Jan19. Each time, as I recall, it would go out-of-stock after a week or two; then be available after 1-2 days; then repeat that two-step once or twice.

For this deal: 10Jan-22Jan avail, 23Jan OOS, 24-29Jan avail, 30Jan OOS, 31Jan-4Feb avail, 5Feb OOS ... "He's dead, Jim."

... Until the next time? ...

No sweet German airgun for me. I traveled for work this week and expected to find my airgun waiting for me when I got home yesterday, but no dice (order placed Feb 1). I called Cabela's again this morning, got forwarded to the drop ship department, and found out that the item was out of stock, so the manufacturer cancelled the order, but they didn't contact Cabelas to tell them, so Cabelas didn't tell me. So I get a refund and no RWS. They are going to send me a $25 gift card for my troubles, which is the only reason I will still even consider buying anything from them in the future.

It seems that Cabela's and Umarex were able to create some good potential future customers with this deal, but unfortunately I'm less likely to buy anything from them now. Which is a shame, because I didn't have anything against Umarex before and I've always wanted an RWS, but now when I'm looking to spend that kind of money on an air rifle I'll be looking at one of the many other great options out there. And that's likely to be pretty soon, because GTA has convinced me that I should treat myself to a higher quality springer/gas ram rifle.

Adam;

I am really sorry that that happened, corporate businesses have sometimes no brains involved in the operations. It's all this philosophy of having "Average Chickens" in the workforce and planning for that.
I would also be mad at the lack of information, after all, computers are supposed to help us with the right information at the right time, but instead it seems that it has worked the other way around. It has made the "average chicken", less than average.

Granted I am very biased, but do take a look at the DIANA 430L from AoA, it is a wooden stocked rifle, small, nimble and elegant, it comes with a ZR Mount and a usable scope (not the greatest scope, but good enough). All for $300:

In the current market, this is one of the best options now.

At the end of the day I did get a free $25 gift card so I guess I can't complain too much. All I'm out is a little time and my shattered dreams of buying a nice German air rifle for a pittance.

I'm moving to NC in a month so I probably won't buy my nice rifle until after then, but when I do I'll likely start one of those what should I buy threads. I'm leaning toward something pre-tuned in .22 right now.

It stinks Cabelas did not notify you.  I don't get it.  Cabelas was leaving you hanging and were waiting for you to make contact to tell you it was out of stock or to request a refund?  It sounds like they don't have a good process in place to communicate issues to the consumer, and also a way to check for items out of stock from the drop shipper, or any way for them to check Umarex's inventory so they would stop accepting orders.  Pretty sad because all they had to do really is send you an email.

Well at least you can save $25 on your next purchase from them, or on a 34P next time they are in stock.  And if the 34P goes on sale again you will be getting the lowest price on the planet  :)

Cust service told me that because it was being direct shipped from the mfg there was no tracking #.  After 2 calls and 2 e-mails getting the same answer (even when I told them that I did get a tracking # on the 34P .177) I e-mailed a different department (shipping & tracking). They got back to me in less than an hour and told me that the Mfg was out of stock   and it won't be available for 6 weeks. I called Cust service back (always very nice) and asked if they would  substitute the RWS 34P striker combo .22 Cal for $229 and they were willing to do that, I was happy with that but someone should have noticed that it was out of stock???
I won't hesitate to buy from Cabela's again, I  got 2 great German springers for a great price. They are now my favorite rifle's.

John, does your 34P seem louder than your wood-stocked versions (due to hollow stock vibration)?

Sorry for the delay Randy, finally got a chance to compare the 34P with the 34 classic (wood). I don't know how accurate my Android decibel app is, but the P reads 80.5 Db, the Wood 80.4 Db, hardly any difference. Surprisingly, the P is a bit harder to cock, perhaps due to being newer with fewer rounds thru it.

Adam;

This DOES look like a great value.  If anyone owns this - can you answer the following questions:

1.  Is the fake moderator at the end of the barrel made of metal or plastic?

2.  Is the piece that connects the cocking rod to the cocking linkage made of metal or plastic?

From the pictures, it looks like these parts are plastic.  While the moderator may be fine, I'd have concerns about the other piece being made of plastic (or even pot metal)

Thanks!

EDIT:  I just caught that this is 43" long.  I was thinking this was quite a bit smaller.  I now have the willpower to easily resist this deal!   ;D

The photo showing a moderator is the wrong photo (of a 34 compact, not the 34P). The one shipped is an all metal barrel. I don't see any plastic in the cocking arm or assy.

hi guys. received this gun with a help of  superchikn. thank you my friend very much!
gun finish is perfect and after crosmans its completly different world!

bad thing is that during shipping somebody (idiot) dropped the box and the gun fell in the box with iron sight (rear) made a hole in box and it lost the screw which controls verticality. the screw with numbers 1 2 3 4 5 ....

if anyone of you have it and dont use it please give it to me. i wanted the gun for my father and little brother to learn shooting with open sights.

happy to be member of this forum. thanks everyone!

Did everyone's 34 not arrive double-boxed?  Was the original box inside a plain brown cardboard box?

I am having a hard time seeing the rear sight or barrel going through the inner or outer box if they were double-boxed.  If they were not, then shame on Umarex who shipped them that way.

Mine was double boxed but barrel went thru the styrofoam and the oem box.  Other than the barrel being crammed full of styrofoam no other cosmetic damage was done.

Double boxed. I don't blame umarex af all. To me this was a shipping company employee or employees being careless or too rough. The barrel was clear through the styrofoam and OEM box. There was a decent barrel circle intent/bludge on the exterior box from where the barrel was pushing. I returned in store with the intention of buying again (hopefully coming to my house perfect), but they were sold out at the time. :'(

Mine came double boxed but the outer box was torn and crushed a small amount on one end..... that had to be UPS but the rifle was secure inside.

The problem with the double box is the OEM box is not secure in the outer box so it slams back and forth and the rifle does the same eventually allowing it to slowly migrate out.  If there was enough packing in between the two boxes or their size was matched better this problem probably wouldn't exist.

I'll bet if you called RWS they would probably send you one after you explained what happened.  Just a guess on my part though

Same here.  That was exactly what I was thinking - outer box too big resulting in too much movement.

So do you see this as an Umarex issue or a Cabela's issue?

Either way, it reflects badly on BOTH of them. One or the other should take charge and fix the issue.

I was about to order one the very next time I saw that deal come up again but after seeing these results.......I don't know........I really don't know what to think.

To be honest...Krales HW35E, even at over twice the price, is looking a whole lot better to me right now.

Like Jeff said, call Umarex and try to convince them to send you the rear sight screw.  That's what I would do.  If Umarex wants you to pay for it, take pictures of the box and rear sight of the 34 and call Cabelas.  Tell them to send you the rear screw, or pay Umarex to ship it to you, or give you credit, Cabelas bucks, etc.

Niko,
I suggest you contact Diana, in Germany. (Contact (https://www.diana-airguns.de/infomenue/kontakt/)). They're closest to (your) Georgia. And, since it sounds like you used a go-between or two to get your 34P, Cabelas and Umarex might have no record of you. After examining my rear sight, it seems unlikely that yours came off during shipping; the spring-loaded ramp, combined with the detents, prevents "accidental" un-screwing (but, Murphy ...?). My bet is a production-line botch; never installed.

Good luck.
------
As for the packaging/shipping issues, it's on Umarex--if they want to offer their customer (Cabelas) drop-ship service, they should do it right. jccams nailed it--all they needed was a wad of brown-paper in each end of the outer box. A $.01 solution.

I agree, try to contact Diana.  Even though I was lucky and the packing issue didn't result in any cosmetic damage to mine, it has a manufacturing defect and Umarex has been useless and unwilling to help.  Mine will more than likely going back to Cabela's in the near future.  Hopefully you have better luck getting your problem resolved.

Niko,

I don't know if it helps or not but the PN for the rear sight is 30839200, they do not list the part you are looking for separately, this is the complete rear sight assembly.

Guys,
I was the go between.  I purchased from Cabelas and shipped to Niko's friend in Delaware who shipped it overseas.

The inner box was surrounded with paper wads just like always.  The gun arrived in perfect condition to me, I fired a few shots and did a lube tune and adjusted the pivot bolt packaged it back up and sent it to Delaware.  The trip to Europe and through customs has taken a few weeks and is when the damage occurred (of course it may have happened on the short trip to Delaware but I doubt it).  I would say this is an isolated incident and not likely that Cabelas or Umarex will cover the damage unfortunately due to the nature of the transaction.
Personally I would not hesitate to purchase another of these guns from Cabelas as the issue was clearly not at their end.
