Title: Muzzle speed Meter with tripod $28.92 @ AliExpress
Post by: james828 on December 05, 2018, 12:25:08 PM
A simple meter to measure the muzzle speed for airguns, small easy setup very affordable, using infrared sensors. Measures in meter per second  we can convert to FPS easily

I like the looks of this.
Please post your views.
Does it work inside?
This one seems easier to use on the bench than the ones that clamp on the gun barrel.
Just be careful that you do not shoot it.
It says hold the muzzle 4 cm to 8 cm = 1.5" to 3.1" from the meter.  Is that true?
$28.92 - $4 if this is your first order?  WOW!

I just ordered today it will be here in about 3-4 weeks via epacket from China. Will post a review once I got it.  According to the review video link that I posted, it should work inside, and looks like the reviewer holding the gun muzzle very close to the meter. I like itís simple setup and compact size. For $28 i would like to take the risk. There area wide range of shooting chronograph on the market from $28 to $500 ( LabRadar) just pick whatever it suit your budget and requirement

Best regard !

AliExpress also has this one that clamps to the barrel.
Does anyone know which is best?
Will a break barrel rifle recoil damage the one that clamps on the barrel?

Jimmy, I ordered this one today.  I will post the results when I get it and try it out.
I already have a ProChrono Pal plus a Caldwell Kit, so this is just something else to play with.

Compact is cute and handy; but the shorter the distance between sensors, the harder the chrono and the user have to work to produce accurate results.  While very fast clock speeds and sensors help, angular errors are more easily induced, where the pellet has travels perhaps 10% further, giving false low readings.

Even just mounting sensors in the device with a millimeter or two spacing error can start producing greater than 2% "fast" or "slow" results.  If the manufacturer has a name brand chrono, he can calibrate his product by shooting through both at the same time.  Else, you just need to check that.

That said, I am absolutely flabbergasted at what the Chinese can produce now, at such low cost.  Good for the American consumer, but not so good for the American engineer and factory worker.  Unfortunately, the American consumer used to be an engineer or factory worker, before they lost their jobs.  Quite the conundrum...

If some clever Chinese company would only produce JSB quality pellets at 1/4 the price, they could rule the world :)

Funny you should ask ..... a lot of people think industries make profits (or SHOULD)..... I sell cars for a living, and with competition, offers, specials, truecar (BS), Carvana (BS) etc., my personal take on a sale is often down to $100 on a $35,000 car! And people think I make $1000 per sale! The dealership doesn't even make that sometimes.
The cost on that chrono unit is about $3! add some labor cost, marketing and shipping etc., they make a profit. Just not huge, they depend on multiple sales to make their money.
Remember, it is easier to sell ONE million items for a buck that to sell ONE for a MILLION!

Multiply meters per second by 3.28 to get feet per second.
Examples:
200 meters per second times 3.28 equals 656 feet per second.
222 m/s x 3.28 f/m = 728 f/s
250 x 3.28 = 820

The above Chinese chronograph was delivered today.

The GOOD:
It works.
It is accurate.  Maybe more accurate than my Caldwell which I don't think is very accurate.
It works inside or outside in shade or sun.
It gives a velocity reading every time.  My Caldwell gives some errors.
It is very small and portable.
It is inexpensive.
It is rechargeable from a computer USB port.  Red means it is charging.  Green means it is fully charged.
It has an automatic shut off or you can shut it off with the button.

The BAD:
The instructions are ALL Chinese.  The aliexpress.com website above has the only instructions that I can read.
I have not figured out all the things that it does because I don't read Chinese.
It is difficult to connect to some guns that have a front sight.  I turned it 90 degrees so the front sight was to the side.  The one with the tripod will be better for these guns.
I would not bolt it to a break barrel.  If I test a break barrel I will just lay the muzzle in the grove on a piece of felt and not use the screws to bolt it down.  The vibration may damage the unit.  The tripod one will be better for break barrels.
I think it only reads in meters per second.  Multiply by 3.28 to get feet per second.
When I turned it off, it clears out all the information.  I don't know if it clears itself when it shuts itself off.

If someone knows how to use this chronograph better, please tell me.

Thanks Earl for the review I am still waiting for mine . IMO this is a very good and inexpensive way to measure the Airgun muzzle speed. Itís simple and I only want to know the fps donít need the fancy features

Mine came USPS and was delivered in my mail box today.
I ordered on 12-5-2018 and it was delivered on 12-22-2018 = 17 days.
Mine is the one that clamps on the barrel of the gun.
Getting the muzzle velocity is easy.
I do not know how to do the other things that it is supposed to do.
There is a way to put in the weight of the pellet and get the energy but I am not interested in the energy.
I would like to be able to tab back thru the shots and get the velocity for each shot and not have to write each one down.
I may figure that out later.  I think it is supposed to hold data for 40 shots.
When you get one with the tripod, please tell me how it works.

This is the operating procedure for the one that clamps on the barrel.
Turn it on by pressing the button 1 time for 2 seconds.
It runs thru a check and then it is ready for the first shot.
The velocity shows on the display for a few seconds.
Then it is ready for the next shot.
It holds 40 shots in memory.
To review the shots, holding the button 2 seconds goes back to the previous shot number and velocity.
Pressing the button 1 time advances to the next shot number and velocity.
Holding the button down 3 seconds turns it off.
The memory is clear when it is turned back on and it is ready for the first shot again.

I am very happy so far with this little chronograph.

Please note:  The one with the tripod may operate differently.  Please post it to help others.

That's the same one I got, just came today 19 days from when I ordered it, cost was $24.92 TL w/free shipping.

Seems to work fine in my early testing. Lost a string before I found that to review the shots in memory just takes a quick press of the single button, repeat to see next shot. Memory erased if turned off. Will mess w/it more later, if any more functions are found I'll post them.

Mine ( model with tripod) came in on Monday 24th I am very happy to report that the little chronograph is working fine as advertised. It functions the same as the model with the clamp. Make sure that you level your gun as flat as you can when you shoot, and aim closer to the bottom where it has all the sensors to ensure accuracy. Other than that this little meter is excellent I am very satisfied.

The model that clamps on the barrel changes the point of impact of of the pellets on the target.
My .177 Gauntlet groups are 1/2 inch lower at 54 feet with the little chronograph clamped on the barrel.
This is both good and bad.
Good that you will not shoot it.
Bad that you cannot keep target shooting while you chronograph.

Do y'all that have this chrono in hand- do you think the build quality is such that it could handle the air blast of big bores?  "Big bore" meaning 120 fpe- 300 fpe+, anywhere from .243 up to .357?  Do y'all think this chrono is accurate enough for tuning?  This price is much better than say, a Magnetospeed Sport!

The chrony only weighs 6 oz. w/o tripod so as long as it were mounted securely so the blast didn't blow it around it should be fine. The tripod is basically useless- only a few inches tall and too narrow of a base footprint and too flimsy. I don't know why they included it other than to say it had a tripod. Mine is gong on the camera tripod that I used for my C E ProChrono Digital.

I was going to ask what threads it had, and whether or not it could go on a normal tripod...

The plan would be to use two tripods- one for the gun and one for the chronograph.

...OK  I'll be the guinea pig  ;)

That would be amazing!!   ;D

The chrony tripod mount is female 1/4-20 so it's plug and play on my tripod.

Sweet- 1/4-20 is the standard tripod thread!!  I may have to pick one of these up...  I'll wait 'til after we hear back from Back_Roads, shooting with his wingshot and slugs!  If all goes well, this is a MUCH more economical way to go than the Magnetospeed!

I think my little Chinese chronograph that clamps on the barrel is more accurate than my Caldwell with the light kit.
The Caldwell with the light kit averages about 2% higher fps than both my Chinese and my Pro Chrono Pal.
The Caldwell is more inconsistent and gives more Error messages(Err2 and Err3).
The Chinese model has given a velocity reading every time.
I have shot about 100 shots thru it with different .177 guns and different pellets and velocities from 472 to 1017 fps.
All this shooting was inside my home.  I have not tried the Chinese model outside yet.
I am VERY happy with the little $20 Chinese "clamp on" model!!
I might buy one of the Chinese models with the tripod just for fun.
Yes, I am an old retired engineer and gun nut that likes his toys.

When I set rifles on sand bags, the barrels are 8 or 9 inches above the bench.
Will the little tripods hold the chronograph that high or do I need to set the tripod on a book?

Hi Earl
I have the model with tripod, they (the tripod legs) are about 5-6" long I think you will need to raise the chronograph higher even when you attached it to tripod IMO

Thanks to james828 for posting this bargain.
Everyone seems to like the little chronographs.

The sharp edges on the barrel clamp need to be smoothed so your gun barrel finish is not damaged.
This is for the model that clamps on the gun barrel.
I also reamed the bolt holes in the top clamp so barrels with front sights can be turned at 90 degrees.
On some guns with front sights, the top clamp needs to be tilted a lot with the front sight pointed to the side.
On guns that the clamp will not fit on the barrel(Crosman 1377 pistol) you can take the top clamp off and lay the barrel in the bottom grove and shoot.

I think the model with the tripod may be the best buy.

That's good, then it probably just got bogged down in the Christmas rush.

I'm liking mine, it's small enough that I can pack it in a range bag plus it's totally tolerant of bad lighting. I can go on the deck in the middle of the night and shoot with it using the outside bug light so I don't accidentally hit it and it records fine.

I have one of these that clamps to the barrel.  It is super easy to use and I built a simple Excel spreadsheet that automatically does the conversion from MPS to FPS when I enter the speed, however, I'm not so sure it's accurate.  For example, shooting .177 cal 8.49 grain H&N Sniper Mediums from my ATI Liberty shows an average 1065 FPS on my Magnetospeed chrony and I get an average of 1030 FPS from this bolt on Chinese Chrony.   But, these were not done on the same day, so there may have been some variables that impacted the results.  Once the weather clears a bit, I may try some back to back tests with both and see if the results are closer.  Convenience and price wise, the little Chinese chrony definitely has the others beat hands down!

LOL!  Very true and for under $30, you really can't go wrong!  It's so small and easy to use, since I made a spreadsheet to convert to FPS, I have been using this one more than my more expensive chrony when tuning.  It may not be dead-on accurate, but it does give me a good reading on the bell and shows me where I'm at when tuning a regulator.  They are definitely worth the money!  I'm using the standard formula of FPS=(MPS*3.28084).  I'm sure I could tweak the multiplier and get the reading closer to what my Magnetospeed is showing, but for my purposes, it's good enough.  Quite honestly, I really don't know if the Magnetospeed is accurate either...   :o

an example of my testing this china speed meter with my caldwell and my alpha chrony.

the speed meter averages about 9fps slower than the caldwell and 2 fps faster than the alpha....which brings up what Pault28 brought up earlier......
which is most accurate ?? who knows ::)

this is what my newest project air rifle did.....

Benjamin bulldog with chopped 24" barrel and some porting work from what i'm told.
performed after calculation,...905fps with 81 gr polymags.
not too shabby, but was told it was avg 850fps with 125gr bullets.

all 3 chronies showed between 720-729fps.

so take it for what its worth.....$29 well spend for a chinaspeedmeter thats very portable and works well 8)

Well I purchased one of these Chinese meters as well and it arrived a few days ago. I have not had much time to test it but I decided to try and translate the Chinese user manual. With some help from Google translate and adding in some text after playing a bit with my meter I now have a pretty good translation. Who knew it can apparently calculate energy as well as speed? I will attach it here but if anyone wants the manual and cannot get it here just send me a PM with your email address and I'll send it to you.

Took me a while to first make an exact translation and then figure out exactly what the verbatim translation meant. Not to mention the steps they leave out. So after I would figure out how each step actually worked by pushing buttons, I rewrote the step to try and make it more understandable. Hope it works for all of you. It can be tricky if you don't push those buttons at the right time or you hold it too long. I did eventually get everything to work on mine.

Here's a MPS to FPS conversion spreadsheet I made to ease data conversion for these cronies.  The shaded areas can be edited, so you can change the information in these areas, but the formulas are protected to prevent accidental deletion of the formulas.  I hope some find it useful, I know i do...

How do I get the speed to display more than 5 seconds after each shot on the clamp-on model?
I usually write down the meters per second with each shot.
5 seconds is not enough time for me.  I am old and slow.
15 seconds would be good.
My Caldwell and ProChrono Pal display the speed until the next shot is fired.

It would also be nice if the automatic shut down time was 20 minutes instead of 3.25 minutes.
Can I disable the automatic shut down on the clamp-on model?

I think his instructions are for the tripod model.
I tried to put 10 in the clamp-on model and I think it was the weight of the pellet because it displayed the speed then another number which I assumed was joules.

I do have the tripod model but I thought the instructions were the same. To change the display time is tricky. Max is 10 seconds. You need to push the function key after you turn on the unit right after the count up and 999.9 shows on the display but before the -SU. Timing is critical as if you wait too long and the -SU shows before you push the button, you will end up in the weight setting setup. If this happens, you must shutdown the unit and then turn it back on to start the count again and get to the 999.9.  It took me a while to figure this out but I finally figured it out and have been able to change the display time both faster and slower than the default. Unfortunately, on it is shutdown it goes back to the default of 5 sec. It does save the data up to 40 records so you can go back and look at the numbers after you have shot as long as you don't shut it off.

The biggest problem I have is that I don't have the unit to play with. The chinese manuals love to skip steps and can be hard to understand when using the translation verbatim. It's more like it gives you clues but you have to figure out the clues to find how it really works. It's like a puzzle. Without the unit, you would get the word for word translation and you would have to work out the puzzle yourself if you can.

By the way, I don't think the tripod models have the auto off "feature" so I have not had to deal with it.

Ordered mine (tripod model) Dec. 11th, it arrived yesterday, I just went and picked it up from the PO this morning. A quick 3 shots shows my Trail NP2 in .177 shooting 10.5 gr CPDs at ~800 FPS, which seems about right to me, although I've never chronied it before.

I always wanted a chrony but couldn't bring myself to shell out the dough for one, so this is perfect! Thanks to Jimmy for the original post and to Doug for all the helpful documents!

Well, Earl sent me his Chinese manual for the clamp-on model and it is very similar to the tripod model. It does not mention any auto shutdown and the basic difference is it tells how to properly clamp the unit to your gun (has two photos at the end which the tripod model does not need). I'll attach it here for anyone who wants to look at it.

My clamp-on model has an automatic shut off.
If I just turn the chronograph on and do not shoot thru it, then it shuts down in 3 minutes and 20 seconds.
If I shoot thru it and it stores velocity information in memory, then it will stay on for 15 minutes, then it will shut itself down and the shooting velocities will be cleared from memory when it is turned back on.

My clamp-on model has this on top:

Chinese words

Model : jiajukuan
Charger: 4.2v
Range : 1-999m/s

Chinese words : 2015301472698

My opinion:
The clamp-on model is a bargain at $22.
The tripod model is a better bargain at $29.
I like the idea of setting the tripod model on the bench 2 or 3 inches from the muzzle and using it while I am target shooting with sand bags.  Yes, I understand that at some point I may shoot the chronograph.
My Gauntlet and Marauder shoot 1/2 inch lower at 18 yards when the clamp-on model is on the barrel.

I am liking the clamp on version for my Sam Yang big bores. I clamp it upside down and it is out of the way of the scope. Just shoot away, standing off hand or whatever, then toggle through and note the speeds.
I will be testing some tin bullets, will see if the sensors can deal with the shine of the tin.  8)

I really like this speed meter.  It is accurate and the setup is easy for any airgun.  No more light issue which is a big problem for the Caldwell chronograph.  I can use this anywhere usually in the garage with the typical lighting in the room and no error.  Awesome.

I don't think my tripod model is accurate. I'll post data later (I'm travelling now) but it shows my "magnum" .177 springers shooting at only about 13 FPE, and my Hatsan 125 at 22 or 25 FPE depending on the pellet. The Hatsan was measured by the previous owner (Rui here on GTA) at around 30 FPE using the same pellets.

I also measured a supersonic shot at only about 1030 fps at around 50 degrees temperature, so that clearly isn't right either.

I do think the precision is pretty good, but accuracy seems to be lacking.

I have a lightly used Shadow 1000 I bought about 2003, it does 875 fps with 7.9 gr. CPHP so it and your Shadow are on the same page.

So I did a bunch more testing today. Iím not gonna share the spreadsheet (PM me if youíre a super-nerd and would like to see it), but these were my conclusions:
-Speeds seemed to be higher today. The day is more overcast, although I was shooting from the shade before. Iíll have to test this variable more in the future.
-As a reference I shot a string of 5 CCI Quiet 22LR rounds from two different rifles. These are advertised at 710 FPS and I measured them at an average of 714 FPS and 718 FPS with about 3% CV, so I think the accuracy of this chrony is pretty darn good, at least today.
-The three .177 springers I tested all showed lower FPE with 10.5 gr CPDs versus 7.8 gr CPHPs; 0.5 FPE, 0.8 FPE, and 1.25 FPE for Gamo, NP2, and Winchester respectively (see my sig for more details on the rifles). FPEs with 7.8 gr CPHPs were 13.0, 15.6, and 14.5.
-My ď30 FPEĒ Hatsan 125 was shooting about 28 FPE with Benjamin 14.3 gr HPs and 14.3 gr CPDs, closer to what I expected. It only shot about 25 FPE with H&N Barracuda Match 21.14 gr. CV was actually a tiny bit higher too, which surprised me and goes against my results from the last test.
-I can test velocity and aim at the same time! Another person mentioned this, and I tried today, and although I wasnít shooting for groups I was able to use scopes and open sites to aim. As the other poster also mentioned, this will likely result in me shooting the chrono at some point, but based on todayís results Iím strongly considering buying another pre-emptively, as Iím pretty happy so far.

Wow that is quite a jump in price I guess we were buying to many of them. I got my muzzle mount one in today and I just really want to say thanks to Doug for the translated instructions which made it a breeze to use and to Paul for the spread sheet which makes it super easy to translate MPS to FPS. It seems to work great, I had no problems getting it going and recording the info off of it. Thanks everyone!

My Shadow has about 10K shots and still accurate with original spring , but my 220 is really slow I need to change out the spring, so the meter from china is working and accuracy seems to be ok .

I agree accuracy seems okay. I have compared several guns that had been previously measured using a CE Pro Digital and there's no more variation between the Chinese tripod meter and the CE that what I've see between different sessions using the CE.

I noticed when I was first testing it out using a Daisy Red Ryder that if I shot too close to the first sensor, the reading was very low. Could be because there's some oil mist from it. As long as I keep the muzzle back, it's fine. I've taken to shooting about a foot behind it just to be sure.

Here's a little table I made that you can save on your phone or print. For in-between numbers multiply the remainder by 3 for a very close approximation. For example, if you get a reading of 255 MPS, the table shows 250 MPS = 820 FPS + (5 x 3) = 835 FPS, which is very close to the actual value of 836.6 FPS.

I just realized most airgunners will find a table that goes below 500 FPS more useful than one that goes above 1100 FPS. Updated version attached.

I finally bought one and I can just thank everyone here for this fantastic opportunity to move from the water filled food tin device to a more considerable method. I had tried some Android apps, too, but adjusting them to the environment noise revealed tricky.
Now I'm getting used to it - I've got the barrel clamped one but I don't use the clamping device, and I found the modest rifles and pistols I own are not as powerful as I thought...

For example, with .177 CPHP pellets :

> Crosman 1377 10 pumps (stock version:) : 508.5 FPS
> Crosman 2100 12 pumps : 643 FPS
> Artemis LR 700W (aka Seneca Dragonfly) 8 pumps : 692 FPS
> Airstrike (Webley Rebel) 10 pumps : 669 FPS

And two surprises in opposite ways :

> with 6.94 gr pellets, I couldn't get more than 361 fps from my Beeman P17. Doesn't seem to leak, though.
> but with 8.80 gr pellets, my Crosman Vantage NP delivered a pleasant 863 fps, which provides 14.47 FPE what is more than powerful enough for me.

So, yes, I'm having fun. Thanks again ;)

The metal burrs needed to be smoothed off the edges of my top clamp to keep it from scratching the gun barrel.

I put some common black electric tape on it to prevent any scratches, even if I don't actually "clamp" my barrel .

Looks like your guns are shooting in their ranges, one thing to check is cycle to cycle consistency.

My suprise is when I see a low MPS reading :-[ then convert it to FPS  :o

For those trying to get energy readings, make sure you are converting your projectile weight from grains to grams. I believe the conversion from grains to grams is 1 grain = .0648 grams.  In some cases in the manual it only shows the weight as (g) but in others the translator specifically said grams. I would think this would make quite a difference in the readings. This is just a FYI as I had to look up this conversion myself.

I don't think I'll ever NEED a Lab Radar...  Even a Magnetospeed is too much, if I'm being honest.  I just need a Chronograph that can be used inside or outside without the need for separate lights, or be finiky because of sunlight and such.  I LOVE my Combro for ease of use, but it's not large enough for .30 cal on up.  I also am not sure I could even use the Combro w/a .25 slug shooter.  This is a MUCH cheaper (and accurate enough) solution than even the Combro.  If it can handle the blast from a Wingshot, I'm sure it'll handle anything I can throw at it.

Bullet energy calculator:

http://www.ballistics101.com/muzzle_energy_calc.php (http://www.ballistics101.com/muzzle_energy_calc.php)

The formula is E = (M x V≤) ų 450,435

The energy of an 8.44 grain pellet at 900 fps = 8.44 x 900 x 900 / 450,435 = 15.2 foot pounds

The energy of a 7.33 grain pellet at 496 fps = 7.33 x 496 x 496 / 450,435 = 4.0 foot pounds

I just received my AliExpress chrony yesterday.  It took 17 days to arrive.  This is the one I ordered:

https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/0.html?spm=a2g0s.9042647.0.0.74224c4doQdAiJ&orderId=97504425266196&productId=32954736508 (https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/0.html?spm=a2g0s.9042647.0.0.74224c4doQdAiJ&orderId=97504425266196&productId=32954736508)

I have not tested it yet, but it does turn on, it takes a charge, and the manual is 100% Chinese.    :o

BTW, my main reason for ordering was to have a backup to my ProChrono which has a really hard time getting readings on gloomy Central New York days (and also on bright days when there is snow on the ground).

Good luck with that! I blew the sky screens off my Pro 3 times trying to record my wingshot. It was too sunny out to test with out them. This little unit Needs Velcro on the bottom to keep it on the table. But for $25 it does work pretty well.

But the unit survived the shots from the wingshot, right?

My plan is to mount the Chrony on a camera tripod (old, heavy Manfroto), and mount whatever airgun I'm tuning to another Manfroto tripod.  I was planning on weighing down the tripod w/the Chrony.  I'm sure that would be fine, yeah?

OK, for all of those who are still trying to figure out exactly how these speed meters are suppose to work even after reading my manual translation, I have a revised edition now available.  I knew that the timing of holding the function button was at times a key to certain settings, I never saw too much about it my original translation. Well thanks to Earl sending me a copy of a translation he received (I assume from his vendor) I now understand the significance and have edited my manual to reflect this. Attached below are the revised editions so you don't have to go back and find the original posts even though I will update them as well.  I hope this helps others as well as it helped me. Thanks Earl!!

Doug. Thanks for the translation. It was the thing that finally tempted me into joining gta.

This bargain gate is a dangerous thing.

Here is an obvious tip that may have already been shared... I used two layers of heat shrink tubing on the U-clamp to reduce the stress on the shroud and give it some grip.

Thanks again.

I used some small diameter rubber air tubing on the U clamp, but I did it more to protect the barrel or shroud from being scratched.

You did good Doug!
The rubber tubing idea sounds good.
I smoothed the sharp edges on the clamp.
I clamp the unit with the display 90 degrees to the left(at 9 o'clock) so the display does not shine into the scope.
I shoot at targets with the chrono clamped to the gun, but it changes the point of impact.

I finally had the opportunity to compare velocities between my Prochrono and the AliExpress and they were spot-on.  I was getting 950 to 960 fps over the Prochrono and 290 to 293 mps over the "Alichrono".  I can't ask for anything better than that!  Next up will be to shoot through it from inside my shed.  This is where the lighting was giving my Prochrono fits.
