Title: UTG can't adjust past 50 yards
Post by: mcoulter on November 16, 2015, 10:19:04 AM
Was out shooting this past weekend. I started at 30 yards, then moved to 50 yards and lastly at about 68 yards.  I found that things weren't quite as sharp at 50 and horribly out of focus at 68...  While I never used the AO for range finding, I found that it was more off than normal.  In fact, I had to have it set at infinity when the target was at 50 yards...

Anyhow, I submitted a warranty email to Leapers last night.  I have all the paperwork on this (and maybe even the box too).  Oh, I also noticed loose powder behind the rear lens in the focus ring.

As you tilt the scope this powder will spill around behind the glass.

For reference the model is:
Leapers 5th Gen 3-12x40 AO Rifle Scope, Ill. Mil-Dot Reticle, 1/4 MOA, 1" Tube

I bought it new in Oct 2012 and it has been on my RWS 34 and then more recently my Hatsan 135.

Yep, this one bit the dust or maybe you need to just let the dust settle!  :P

Read a thread earlier about someone who had a similar issue with a Hawke scope. Turns out he had over torqued his rings & had ovaled the tube. On the Hawke reps advice, he loosen the screws & retorqued them to the proper 12 in/lbs & the scope focused just fine. Is it possible the dust you're seeing is maybe glass dust?

I did notice that after removing the scope and playing with it (working both the AO and zoom back and forth quite a bit) that the distance sharpness would return but its ability to stay sharp was intermittent.   I'm not sure what you mean by glass dust.  I have 3 other UTGs and none of them are dusty inside...

Thanks!

Dust like when glass cracks/fragments from over tightening. Did you use a torque tool of some kind when you tightened the rings down?

Oh, gotcha.  And no, I don't have a torque wrench...  I just make sure that when tightening against the tube I use the short side of the allen for leverage.  I figure that way it will be hard to over tighten it vs. using the long side for leverage...

sounds like to me that the internal portion of the optics has cracked or broke loose causing the dust and the improper adjustability, it may be a manufactures defect or it could be that the gun is developing to much recoil, check for leaks or bad seals on the gun just to make sure it is OK.
I own 6 UTG scopes and never had a problem, but none are on a springer rifle, I would think my .308 and my .30-06 would create more than enough recoil to break a scope.
But I know a Springer with a bad seal can create a hammer effect that can transfer to the scope and cause internal damage.

Believe it or not, a magnum springer is harder on a scope than a 30-06 or .308 because of the recoil forwards & backwards.

More than likely if you used the short end of the Allen wrench, then you probably didn't over torque the scope.

Yeah, there's that too!  Technically it's more like from 12fpe to 31 fpe with my rifles  :o

Well, Leapers / UTG said to ship it back to them.  I finally got around to sending it today.  We'll see what they have to say about it!  So far their customer service has been VERY good.  Any slowness in taking care of this has been totally on me and not them...

Well I have to complement UTG / Leapers on this scope replacement.  I just got word that they'll be shipping me a new scope.  The exact model I had was discontinued so they'll be sending the latest version of the 3-12x40.  Two thumbs up to Leapers in not only standing behind their product, but their communication and helpfulness has been outstanding throughout this process  ;D

I sent Leapers an e-mail a week ago about a scope problem I have.  I'm yet to hear from them.  How did you contact Leapers, if you please.

Thanks,

Greg

Thanks, Matt.  I'll let you know what happens with my second attempt.  That's the same address I sent my first question to.  Maybe this time will be a charm.

Well the replacement scope arrived this past week.  I have mounted it but not had time to shoot it:
