Title: Weihrauch HW 50s tuners/smiths?
Post by: reallyneat on March 11, 2011, 04:57:37 PM
I am relatively new to airgunning as an adult and just bought a used 50S. I want to get it looked at by someone who is experienced with the Weihrauch line, and get it tuned to reduce/eliminate the twang (buzz?) that seems to scare off birds, plus just get it done to make it as smooth all-around as possible. I know there are quite a few airgunsmiths out there but am wondering who you guys would recommend. This is a 2009 model, .22 caliber w/iron sights (no scope yet). And I live in New Mexico, if that matters.

Thanks everyone. I do appreciate your suggestions.
Dixon

Thanks JimL911,
I went to the site and read it over. Lot's of negativity from Mr. Watts, but if he's really the best... can you say something about your experience?

Dixon, there is no doubt that Mr. Paul Watts will give your rifle a good fixin'. I've dealt with Paul and will testify on his behalf. Now if you read his FAQ page you understand that there is no set time table to get your rifle back. It could take a while. The fastest I've ever got anything from Paul took 3+ months. I am currently waiting on a rifle that he's had for 9 months and counting. Now if you are in a hurry I'd advise you to look elsewhere. If you don't mind the wait on the other hand you'll get a nice rifle back in return that will be much better than it came from the factory.I'd advise you to call Paul and talk over with him your concerns. A simple basic tune can be turned around fairly quickly but if your gun has more serious issues then that's gonna take a while. We have some serious Pro tuners that are members here on the GTA that can probably give you what you want in a reasonable turn around time as well. Ed aka Shadow for example or John in PA are a couple of Pro tuners that can be found here.

Hi ReallyNeat and welcome to the gta. You could also try Mr. Rob Hawkins, who is a member and donator to this site, specializes in german guns, has fair prices and who has done my work with 100% perfection. I can highly recommend him, although Mr Watts and the others mentioned are said to be very good tuners also.  J  http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.springguntunes.com%2F&ei=buN8TeNUyLvRAZPRmNMD&usg=AFQjCNF3AHicffTboMYlIDbromRU7rtMLA (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.springguntunes.com%2F&ei=buN8TeNUyLvRAZPRmNMD&usg=AFQjCNF3AHicffTboMYlIDbromRU7rtMLA)

ps: he VERY quick with turnaround too :)

Thanks, Progun. I appreciate the recommendation on Paul. I respect what the man says on his work, and have no doubt as to his reputation. I've got some work to do with my HW 50S to make sure I can communicate the issue(s)... my two 3-year-olds (fraternals) are waiting on their old man to finish building their backyard playset, then maybe I can get some time with the gun.

And thanks JonnyReb for the nod to Rob Hawkins. I've emailed him and he has responded very nicely. If my life situation continues as it has for the last few years, I may not care how long my rifle sits at someone's shop! Meanwhile the airguns are locked up in the safe, but I do get the occasional chance to sneak out for a few shots...

Best to you all,
Dixon

Not that this probably matters to any of you experienced guys, but I have sent my HW 50S to Ed Ehrisman, the progeny of Gene's Tunz and Charlie DaTuna(sp?). My only concern might be whether I spent enough and/or asked for the right kind of work. I decided from my communications with Ed to trust him to do the right thing(s), based on his experience and judgment. Also, I have since noticed some strong recommendations from members on this site. So, I will let you all know what was done and how it turned out.
Respectfully,
dw

I received my rifle back from Ed aka Shadow last week, after I requested a delay in shipping due to my absence for a few days around Easter. It is now shooting without vibration, is very smooth, and even with open sights is shooting very straight as best I can tell with my cardboard box set up in the field behind my house. I will get some targets out there soon to get a better idea, but for now I am very pleased to have a nice gun that's cleaned up, quiet, and doesn't buzz my ears every time I shoot it. Thank you, Mr. Ehrisman
