Title: How Far Can A .177 fly...
Post by: DevilsLuck on November 03, 2015, 08:17:28 PM
It's a pretty straight forward question. The set up would be; a Crosman storm, shooting Crosman Premier Hollow Point hunting pellet. Weight? Unknown to me... But probably common knowledge amongst this crowd.
I just want to know how far it can travel. Accuracy, power... Not a concern as far as this post is concerned. Thanks in advance for the info.

Chairgun Can compute that for you...  http://www.hawkeoptics.com/chairgun.html (http://www.hawkeoptics.com/chairgun.html)

Shot at a level attitude from a standing position, probably ~ 50 yards. Angled up to achieve max distance, maybe (as published years ago) 400 yards.

Found an old thread:

Yrok is right in there.  PA says CPHP's are 7.9 grains.  I couldn't find the ballistic coefficient for them, but Crosman Premier Lights (same weight, but not HP) are 0.023.  Guessing at about 850 FPS, Chairgun gives a maximum range of 468 yards, barrel angle at 22 degrees, and terminal velocity of 133 FPS.  Judging by the other hollow point pellets in the list, dialing the B.C. down to 0.010 gives 249 yards, 18 degrees, and 88 FPS.

Absolute maximum range is useful for assessing a shooting space for projectile containment, but keep in mind that's not a practical range.  At that distance the grass is growing faster than the pellet moves, and the pellet is raining down nearly vertically.

Just a FYI, there's a Chair Gun app for IPhones. Not sure if there's an Android app.

Yes, there is an Android version...

Can you imagine a .177 cal mortar?

I want to lob one at max distance; into a garbage can. I like trying the "impossible"...

Not impossible, but certainly difficult.  At maximum range the pellet is falling down like a rock, so it should go into the can.  It doesn't have much kinetic energy, so it shouldn't bounce out of the can.  That makes it easy - all you have to do it hit the can.

I shoot at a 10" pot lid at 100 yards.  In a dead calm the gun produces about a 5" group, so I know theoretically that I can hit the target.  Except at that range it stops being about the gun and becomes a problem of wind, and the best I can do is about 80% "hits."   At maximum range it would become even more pronounced.  I only shoot that scenario on dry days, because I need the little puffs of dust from dry dirt to see where I'm hitting.  At maximum range I would probably also need a separate spotter with a higher powered spotting scope.

Then there is the problem of sighting.  Chairgun indicated that those maximum ranges are achieved with the barrel angled up at roughly 20 degrees, so even mil dots or stadia lines aren't going to help.  You would have to either make a custom mount or sight on a fixed point in the terrain way above the trash can.

Now you've got me thinking.  Unfortunately, I think it will have to wait for the calm evening hours of mid-summer, just before dusk.

I've solved the problem of "spotting". Theoretically at least. Float a garbage can out into a pond or lake... Problem is; I don't own either of these.

Off topic:  Reminds me of a 1910 experiment where they fired a Maxim machine gun straight up to calculate terminal velocity in air.  The idea was to time the bullet until it splashed into the water around them.  The experimenter is quoted as saying "we had no head cover, but trusted to the wind to carry them away far enough to miss us."(Hatcher, Julian S., 1947, "Hatcher's Notebook," The Military Service Publishing Company, p. 512)

Interesting. So my idea isn't totally... "Nutters".

Will it work?  Maybe.  "Nutters"?  Even if it were, it's a far sight better than wondering if the thing is going to rain down on your head.  Whoever thought that one up had the butter slip off his noodles.

A Beeman Kodiak shot at 900 ft/sec (19 fpe)
468 yards, that is about what a D350 will do with that pellet.
