Title: "Taylor KO Formula'' For bigbores
Post by: hunter457 on November 03, 2015, 06:38:47 PM
The "Taylor KO formula" was developed by John Taylor. Talyor was an experienced African hunter, his formula was based on killing ''Thousands'' of large game animals with nearly any caliber you can imagine. This formula is designed to give you a relative "killing power" number for a given caliber, the higher the number the better.
 food for thought. 950fps 280gn .457 = 17

You can find the energy calculator on handloads.com

There is a lot of logic behind the Taylor KO Value. I shoot big bore centerfire handguns and rifles that don't look impressive when using foot pounds of energy for reference. FPE tends to favor high velocity rounds. TKOV shows the true potential of heavy bullets at moderate velocities.

Like all "killing formulas", the TKO has its limitations.... It predicts that a baseball thrown by a major league pitcher would be more than ample to kill an Elephant....

Having said that, I agree that projectile diameter (caliber) and momentum have great influence on the lethality of bullets.... PROVIDED they have enough penetration to reach completely through the vitals to the opposite side of the animal, at a minimum.... Enough energy to exit is helpful to create twice the blood trail....

That's funny! I ran the numbers and a 100mph baseball is off the charts! Has to be the weight of the ball giving it the big numbers. And I thought my 600 grain 58 caliber conicals were heavy!

Yes i agree holes in and out of the chest cavity are ideal. as for the baseball theory, its all shot placement i reckon
