Title: Spring twang - annoying however worth a tear down to solve ?
Post by: Geoff on November 01, 2015, 07:08:50 PM
I got the opportunity to shoot all 3 of my 22 cal springers today.  I was looking for best pellet and to be honest was hoping I shot terribly with 2 of them so I could more easily part with them as my collection is TOO LARGE for me.

The last one I shot was my Winchester 850 which looks to be a rebranded Hatsan 95.   The gun had been sitting in the cast for probably 10 months as last time I shot it things went well.

Today when I shot she was twanging like a banjo on me.  It got only slightly better over the 60 or so pellets I tossed checking different pellets.

I would tear it down however this was the last 5 shot group of the night and I find it difficult to tear down a rifle that is shooting well.

What do you do ?  Stop the annoying twang no matter how well it is shooting or deal with it until it starts to shoot terribly.

I loath twangy guns...I'd break it down in a heartbeat. Lots of stuff you can do that really make a difference. I been working on a project and I've all but eliminated the twang.. I ordered a roll of closed cell insulation tape and I'm going to soft bed it. Hoping that makes it even better. Doing a tune shouldn't change accuracy providing you don't nik a seal or mess with the crown.
Good Luck

Nice Hatty. Pretty rare under the Winchester name as I understand. But I'm guessing you know that. Me, I'd probably live with it for a while with it shooting like that. But as Bill said, a good tune won't hurt the accuracy unless you nick a seal .

Thank you all.   Winter might be a good time for this task.

I got one Geoff fixed the twang with a guide, really like it same gun as a 95, mine shoots 825s and accurate. David

I was thinking the same thing David.  My CFX was a twang machine with I got it, and by putting a bit of thickness on the spring guide and top hat shaft it stopped it.

If you know someone who has a lathe, he/she could make you a new tighter fitting sping guide out of delrin. Problem solved.

Jo - That would be nice, however nobody I know owns one.  I do keep looking at metal lathes then wonder what I would really do with it after making a couple parts.

Thanks for the suggestion though !

I used this on my Hatsan 1000X/.25:

http://www.amazon.com/CRC-Extreme-Chain-Aerosol-Black/dp/B000R8EI08 (http://www.amazon.com/CRC-Extreme-Chain-Aerosol-Black/dp/B000R8EI08)

You can apply it through the slot where the spring is visible without a full tear down. I also sprayed some on the cocking linkage and it now cocks smoothly and there is no more twang. Not a full lube tune, but a quick way to quiet things down and smooth them out. YMMV

Geoffrey you can use the aluminum ducting tape to build up your spring guide for a twang free fit.

I might try that on my Webley Spector--same as the Hatsan 1000 springer. Does it set up thick? What I mean is where it won't be running off making a mess.
Thanks!
Ed

Yes, it sets up like tar. Use masking tape around the slot to prevent overspray, you can use a good solvent like brake or carb cleaner to clean up any overspray. Only downside is that it smells pretty strong for a few days.

Thanks John-appreciate it. That's what I was hoping for. I'll definitely order some and give it a try!

Didn't do any chrony before & after, just noticed a smoother and quieter shot cycle and smoother cocking.

What do you do ?  Stop the annoying twang no matter how well it is shooting or deal with it until it starts to shoot terribly.
In my opinion, accuracy like that warrants some extra time and attention to improve the shot cycle. I've promised myself I would put a few tins of pellets down range to let my rifles smooth out on their own, but I inevitably discover them laid out on my workbench getting a home tune or spring kit within a few twangy shooting sessions.
