Title: WAR Flex .30 and BBT 63 & 68 grn designs
Post by: Gr8Gorilla on October 31, 2015, 01:06:56 PM
All Flex owners interested in some slugs need to post on the NOE FORUMS for these designs. Or at least enough of you guys so that we can get a group buy of the mold. Here is the link to the poll thread. These should work in our barrels and fit our magazines.

So, were any flex owners interested in these slug molds at all?

They were designed by the same person that designed the TJs barrel on our Flex rifles. If it's not too late let's sign up, only need 9 more...

You can get the .300 mold made at accurate molds right now. I have cast a bunch with it.  Mold was not mine though.

Slug the barrel first. I suspect y'all will find them at ~.3015" which would want something slightly larger and Accurate can cut the mold to size. I have cast with one and it came right on the 'cast to' spec. Unfortunately, this assumed a .3000 groove dia...

Gr8Gorilla, have you talked with Travis about using cast? When I first received my FLEX I had wanted to try cast. Mr. HollowPoint sent me some .303 to try out of her. Before I shot any cast thru her I called Travis, he strongly suggested not to shoot the cast. He explained that thru the choked bbl with cast it would wear the choke out of her. My FLEX is way too accurate to mess her up. I have too many big bores that are designed strictly for cast. I think I'll leave mine as is with JSB 44 pellets. Maybe Travis can make us a barrel for cast to swap out for those of us who love shooting cast bullets. Just passing this info on.
Take care Fellas

So are they putting a choke on the barrels?  Because a TJ barrel does not have a choke.

Hey Doug,

The blanks come to me from TJ as barrel blanks.  I machine them and apply a choke to the barrels, just like the .22 cal Hammer Forged I sell.  I can choke any barrel.

Hope things are good.

I don't think you should shoot any .303 slugs out of your Flex, however these are .300 and the slug and barrel was designed by the same guy.

Also, Henry Pope choked his barrels. They shot slugs.

Mr. Hollowpoint has .300 and .298 slugs, just ask. I ordered a few 50 bags of .300 for testing.

The rebated boattail, Bob's Boattail are designed specifically to stabilize in this barrel.

The barrel blank specs are (according to TJ's):
Groove: .300
Lands: .294
Number of Lands: 6
Twist: 1:26
CrMoly Steel is what the barrel is made from.

I am not sure what TJ's Manufacturing tolerances are, anyone else know?

May I ask if the choke is put in with a crimp from the outside? How many rounds do you think it would take for soft lead to wear that choke out? Has anyone tested it?

Remember that the JSB pellets tend to measure .303 from reports and our barrel is .300 so I would think that pellets would put more wear on the choke than correctly sized slugs but that is just my thoughts, I haven't actually tested this. Also .303 is the normal .30 cal and we have an actual .300 barrel.

I have said this in other posts and want to be very clear, the standard .30 cal barrel from WAR in the Flex is choked and you cannot shoot slugs out of it. BUT because the Flex has a removable barrel and probe on bolt you can swap between calibers and also have non choked slug shooting barrels. 1 gun but many different options and set ups. We now have a regulator available for those wanting their guns regulated, It works very well with the small bores up to .25 I havent tested it yet on the .30. We are constantly working on new upgrades.

JSB pellets are NOT .303 cal, despite what Daystate calls their gun.... They measure 0.300" at the head, and about 0.308" at the skirt.... The barrel I designed is 0.300" bore and 0.294" groove with a 26" twist and unchoked as they come from TJ's.... It was designed for the JSB pellets, and the 63-70 gr. BBT's were subsequently designed to work with IT.... I cannot state how they will work in the W.A.R. choked version of the barrel, but I can tell you that the JSB pellets work great in the unchoked version, so if you want to shoot both, that would be my choice, since Travis and Jim say the choked version will not shoot slugs....

I have only shot a few slugs from it and they didnt do very well but that also depends on the slug and how much bearing surface it has. Im not saying you cant really what im saying is dont expect the same results as with a diablo pellet unless someone finds a slug that will work well I would suggest getting a pure slug shooting barrel.

When/if somebody tries the new NOE design that this thread is about, that may change.... I designed it with choked barrels in mind.... It has a smaller center section that doesn't touch the lands to minimize drag.... and the length of lead in contact with the rifling is quite short, compared to the overall length of the slug.... It is 63 gr. as a HP and 68 gr. as a FN.... The center portion is only 0.291", the back of the nose 0.300", and the driving band 0.302".... The actual diameter can be varied slightly by NOE when they make the molds.... It is intended for a 27" or faster twist, so should work great in the barrel Sean and I designed for TJ's....

This design is currently in the Group Buy discussion stage, if there is enough interest, it will proceed to a Group Buy.... There were 5 people expressed an interest in it in the Poll.... 10 needed for a GB to happen....

So has anybody slugged one ov these? The two I got my hands on, from production dates well over a year apart were .3015...The last one shot pellets quite well.

My early one was 0.300"groove, later one I haven't checked....

Interesting discussion. I'm really glad this thread has come up as I was wondering about performance of these and other more traditional slug rounds performance in choked barrels.
So the Flex can launch a 44gr diabolo pellet in the 900+ fps range, how fast can it send a 61gr NOE .300 HP?

(Edit)
I think I answered my own question. On the Wicked Air Rifles page they say the Flex .30 can fire 30 rounds at 80-115 fpe, so theoretically a 61gr round would do 920 FPS to produce 115 fpe.

I have the Flex with a .308 slug barrel shooting 63 grain slugs at 980 when cranked up if that helps

It helps and doesn't help. I'm shopping for my first PCP and trying to stick to a budget. I want a lot from the gun so I have doubled my budget. I was going to be happy with a Vulcan .25, but I keep reading about and dreaming about the Flex .30 and the Slayer PCP's. Incredible accuracy, long range and flexibility are important to me. People freak out about guns so the Slayer and Vulcan are appealing as they don't look like a firearm. But neither has the interchangeable calibers and the Slayer Sport Pup is not yet in production. So yeah, that helps, I just have to decide how much I'm willing to irritate my wife with this purchase. That information makes me want to irritate my wife more- not helping.

As the TJ barrel is chrome moly, for firearms, I don't' doubt that the choke will wear from shooting slug's, but if cast in pure lead, or no more than 2%, I'll just about bet it would take a few hundred thousand rounds to do it! ;)

Chrom Moly firearm steel is some tough stuff!  If it can take the temps of high pressure gun powder, and the friction of jacketed bullets, Especially in the leade, (forcing cone of the chamber), lead isn't going to do much at all to it!

Ok, I'm ignorant, I'm learning here but the cup is more than half empty. What does the crown impart on the pellet?

Count me in for a mold let me know. It will be for a flex , hatson, and daystate wolv 303. I would like to stay at 50-55 gr but will go with the rest of the crew. I'm flex-able no pun!!!.

The group buy will be run from the NOE website, not here.... I will announce if/when it reaches that status, but then you will have to go there to participate.... You should go and indicate your interest to move the process along anyway....
