Title: What a difference !!
Post by: avator on October 14, 2015, 06:29:00 PM
First off, Thank you Sfttailrdr46...
A while back I made a trade with Don... a Benji 392 for a D34P. To my surprise he included a gift in the shipping box. A metal receiver and pump arm 880. He told me that he found this gun while on a service call to check out a furnace. The customer found it in the house when she moved in and asked if he would like to have it. Alot of you already know I am not a fan of cheap feeling plastic guns. Nothing against those of you who are. I enjoy reading about the amazing things you guys do with them. The metal receiver and pump arm do give this gun a bit of heft which makes it feel much less toyish. I had read about some guys filling the stocks on the plastic guns with things like caulking and such and thought I would give it a shot. I was quite surprised to find the butt plate was screwed onto this gun as opposed to being molded in. I removed it to find a nice 1/2" hole in the middle. The problem was, it was filled with styrofoam which was pretty easy to gouge out with a flat blade screwdriver. I happen to have 25 lbs. of #8 shot I use to reload my shotshells for my Trapmaster 1100. I cleared out enough room for about 5 good tablespoons of the shot. (I didn't think to weigh it) I just packed it in until it wouldn't take any more. I put a piece of tape over the hole so the shot couldn't make it's way out into the butt plate and rattle around. Boy, what a difference !!! I handed the gun to non-suspecting Betty Lou and she said "WOW.. Why is it so heavy?" It even changed the sound of the gun when fired to a more solid thunk. Now I'm thinking of filling the plastic fore arm covers as well. This is a very accurate and powerful 880 that I shoot with open sights. I'm very glad to own it.

 Sounds about right  ;)

filling the stock makes the difference night and day. As big and time consumng  project as taping the muzzle end. Each take 5 minutes eachto do and totally change the 880.

Funny I just repaired a metal/metal 880 for a long time friend. It shoots great now.  He will be happy. He bought it new in the early 80's with his own money as a young teen. And it is a great shooter. He needs it for nutter control.

Thank you for replying Tom... I saw you post in another thread about the noisy pump arm on the metal/metal 880.  Seems a bit funny but, I lined the entire channel where the pump arm lays against the tube on mine with the fuzzy side of velcro. Mine quieted right down. I pretty much do this with all my pumpers. I don't think anything could make any pumper completely silent but this sure made it better. I've also heard that removing the spring that acts as a catch for the arm takes alot of noise out as well. I'm not going to do this. I can live with what I have because this is not my "goto" hunting or pesting gun.

Yup, his is now lined. Next time I run into town I'll give it back to him and a lesson in care for it. It has never seen oil in the 30 years he has owned it.  ???

I am going to see how old his kids are. I know one is now an adult, but I am not sure of the ages of the others. If it is age appropriate i may throw in a 2nd 880 for him. He did mention he kept forgetting to put it in his truck as his kids always wanted to shoot it. He is a firearms guy. Knows nothing about AG's. He just saw all of my FB posts with dead nutters, rabbits, etc with my Daisy's and asked me to fix his up.

Just an FYI Bill, all 880's have a removable plate with the big 1/2 inch hole to fill up the stock.

I have a few that sit around and collect dust. I just plain have too many air rifles but, every time I make an attempt to thin the herd I sit and find some reason to hang on to each of them. Oh and BTW.... trading one gun for another is not considered thinning the heard.
