Title: benjamin trail np2 slowing down, any ideas?
Post by: n4spd on September 19, 2015, 07:08:39 PM
I have a Benjamin Trail NP2 which started life at ~800fps using crosman premier hollow points 14.3gr.

It's been ~3 months with casual backyard target plinking and now has dropped to 720fps using same pellets.

Any ideas on what might be going on?  I just sent crosman an email and see what they say...

check your breech seal,do the tissue test, lay a tissue over the breech and shoot, if it blows a hole or the tissue moves, ya found your leak, or it could be the np,that is leaking.good luck , you have a good rifle, i love mine

My guess would be the piston seal or the Nitro Piston losing pressure, though the breech seal is the easy fix if that's the problem.

In any case, listen to Crosman's suggestions.  If you've only been shooting it three months the gun is still on warranty so Crosman will have the final say.

Did the tissue test this morning, a few times, didn't see it move.  The breech seal seems like same as before, no cuts, raised slightly above metal like before.

The only difference I sensed was the cocking effort actually got easier on the second half of the stroke, seemed easier than before, might be wear-in though, but suspicious.

Searched on this topic and it seems other people have add similar issues with the nitro piston slowing down.  Since I've only had it a few months, I'll see when Crosman responds to the support request submitted on their website.

Thanks,
Rob

The NP system have a history of being a major failure, when they give up the ship.
Crossman has a good history of Customer Service and Replacement.  The NP "is, what it is". it is a cheap Chinese make product.

The NP2 is US assembled international (China?) parts.  Should have better quality than the NP.

That said, easy cocking is suspiciously indicative of weak gas ram.

Your symptoms sound very much like what I had with my Trail NP.  A new gas spring fixed it right up.  Mine was out of warranty, but Crossman sold me a replacement gas spring for $25 bucks or so.  While I didn't notice my cocking effort going down with the old spring, cocking effort definitely went up with the new gas spring.

thanks for everyone's replies and gta posts in general (I'm learning slowly)...

So I called Crosman, first lady was not friendly.  She wanted me to pay for shipping even though I've only had the gun for 3 months (ordered on 5/29/15 but received sometime in 6/15).  Argh...  really.  3 months...  She said they only pay for shipping in FIRST 30 days (1 month).

Well, that's the last crosman I buy. period.  Considering the Trail NP2 was on the high end of their break barrels, it's disappointing.  Reminds me of buying a car in the 1980s.

I complained that rifle never lived up to it's promises when new and just got worst... got another rep that was friendlier and said they would send a shipping label.  Still left me with a bad taste...

yeah people can really leave you with a bad impression when they don't really know the frustration a customer goe's threw when a product they sell don't live up to the rep they create, though i love my np22, i bought from a dissatisfied customer who could not figure out why it was so inaccurate ,quick re crown and one of the gr3 triggers, and i could hit flies at 20 yards with it every time using 22 cal dome pellets, still that way.though i don't shoot any of my brake barrels anymore, least not that one in a year, there are some other really powerful and nicer np air guns that you could purchase in you decide to get a refund, like, https://www.pyramydair.com/product/hatsan-125th-air-rifle-combo-vortex-piston-camo?m=2945 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/hatsan-125th-air-rifle-combo-vortex-piston-camo?m=2945)      https://www.pyramydair.com/product/hatsan-135-air-rifle-vortex-piston?m=3482 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/hatsan-135-air-rifle-vortex-piston?m=3482)

Got a new Benjamin Trail NP2 back from Crosman today.

After ~50 shots, it shoots almost exactly like the old one (before it went south) at 810-820fps using 14.3 crosman hp.

So happy ending...  although I'll probably sell it now that I'm building up a qb78 hpa setup.

I have found that the NP2 is extremely accurate and well made. Crosman customer service is usually pretty good but like everywhere, you deal with humans. They have varying levels of training, experience, and people skills. I don't think you should base your opinion of the entire company as negative based on the initial response of the rep,  since the issue was ultimately, appropriately resolved. Crosman stands by their products in my experience.
