Title: Crosman TR77 NPS Yay! My first air rifle and it's great
Post by: FrankBlack01 on September 11, 2015, 08:03:16 PM
Here she is, my first Air rifle, and well personally I think it looks bad @@@  8)
Before I begin, guys I was born and raised French in Montreal, so I might make some weird grammatical errors so sorry :)

I was hesitating between this rifle and the Crosman phantom, so I said to myself what the heck lets go and see them for real.
Reading reviews online is one thing, actually holding the rifle in your hands, very different.....
And the TR77 NPS was on special at CT for $149,
Just had to get it and I'm so happy I did!

I'm a total newbie when it comes to air rifles, shot some a few times when I was a teen but always wanted do get into the hobby but never got around to it, or around the wife *cough*.

This gun looks like the illegitimate love child of a tactical shotgun and a AR, feels really great to handle, seems light to me,  the pistol grip is and feels quite nice.
Finish and plastic on the gun are flawless, not a ding or scratch, doesn't feel cheap you know?.
Only thing I don't like on it, the Crosman crosshairs on the sides, don't like that but hey can't be perfect.

Ok... As for all the reviews and things you might have read about the rifle which might make you (and made me) hesitate,
Here's my newbie perspective on some of these issues. :)

-Break barrel takes enormous pressure to cock :
Hmmm.... well not mine, I mean you give it a tap on the muzzle, not hard, and it cocks with little effort,
I weigh 150 lbs and am 5'8 :) (and it wasn't broken in, brand new, never fired, still had the white tape thingys around the box, and I checked to make sure.)

-Included centerpoint scope is awful
Yup, you can't adjust the focus, I'm sure at 50 yards it must be fine but anything closer than 40 feet is blurred,
One curious thing I found, if I take off my glasses (Blind as a bat I am), then all becomes clear in the scope even at 10 feet?
(Except the crosshairs which become blurred), weird.... But... I installed it and was dead on with 0 adjustment, so...

- included scope mount doesn't lock solidly
So far I can say it hasn't moved a hair and seems very solid on the rifle, then again only shot 100 pellets through it.

Awful trigger, too long
Ya I get that, way too long, but hey I got used to it, it seems predictable enough, GTR trigger mod here I come. :)

-Rifle is awfully loud
Was scared of that.... well lucky thing I'd just finished shooting the Swiss Arms 941 pistol, now that pistol... is loud,
I wear ear protection indoors, and I found the TR77 NPS to be relatively quiet actually.

Velocity and accuracy :

Now I hadn't shot a rifle since I was 13, so 32 years ago ;)
First set of five targets at 25 feet (unfortunately don't have more room), in a standing position.
All what I consider nice groupings with no adjustment on the scope, not bad a for a newb ;)
The recoil surprised me on the first shot, but got used to it really quickly.
Took Pyramid air's advice, holding it real gently works great.

The last set was pretty tight, very happy.
It was difficult to stay steady in a standing position, I imagine it must be better in a rested or prone position.
Tripod... hmmmm :)

So there it is, my newbie review of my first air rifle the Crosman TR77 NPS,
I just love this rifle, great fun to shoot.

I highly recommend it,

Cheers
Frank Black.

I owned one and it shot quite well out to 25 yards (best I could get at the time).

The only issue I had was I had to hold onto that think like a python on a deer to get good groups.  For me, the artillery hold did not cut it with mine.

Congrats on the new gun.  I am sure you will enjoy it until you get the fever for a new one.   ;D

That's a Crosman I will own one day.  They have a 'sample' chained to it's display at a local Bass Pro. I absolutely love the ergos on it, and compactness.

I'll try to explain a cocking technique that may help ease the fatigue.  While seated, break the latch however you choose. Now, put the butt down atop your thigh, close-in to your trunk. Muzzle is 90degrees up. With your cocking hand gripping as close to muzzle as you can, begin to pull downward. At the same time, your hand holding the rifle pulls away from the other hand( arcing lower than the former 90 degrees), until it's latched. Once you get the hang of it, you can do it likewise while standing, placing the butt into the crook of your thigh-hip area.

Hope that makes sense. ;)

Thanks,
Well thus far seems to work standing (artillery hold)
Tomorrow I'll be shooting with a sandbag, I'll see if it still works.

And yes you're right, I'm starting to feel a bit warm maybe feverish lol
(Just 2 more, a .22 and the 92fs lol)
Well then there's a new scope for the TR77, ok 3 more.....

Yes indeed, I'd also buy .22 version if they made it :)

let me say that these are the wisest words i have ever heard on this sport and once you accept them you'll enjoy your rifles a lot more...

"&^^& glass on a great gun make a mediocre rifle... Good glass on a crappy gun make a good gun... "

that is an absolute truth.

Makes sense, I'm encouraged though, first session after adjusting crappy scope,
Can't wait to see where I can go with the new one incoming :)

I know this thread hasn't been replied to in a while but anyone looking for a Tr77 or Crosman Fury might come across it.
I have the spring version Fury ll Blackout. I changed out the trigger spring with the TX bearing mod and instead of the aweful lonnng pull I have 1/4 inch pull a d 3lb weight.. beautiful!
Basically, best bud gun I ever bought. Powerful, accurate and nice and light compared to my other guns. Best kept secret I reckon, Crosman outdid themselves here. I love mine would never sell it. Looking for a NP one now.

Cheers

Mark

To the original poster: You actually CAN adjust the front lens focus for different distances. And, while the method isn't as convenient as on a scope with an adjuster ring, it can be done.
Here's how. First, decide what distance you want the target in the sharpest focus. Set up a target at that distance. Now, unscrew the front most threaded ring on that Centerpoint scope, and remove it. The next ring inward is threaded internally and externally. Look at the target and screw that inner ring inward and outward till the target is in sharpest focus. Then, screw the outer ring you removed, back in.  Now check the focus on your crosshairs, and adjust them with the rear most focus ring. You're done.

I have 2-3 of the 4 power Centerpoint, and this method works and makes those scopes very useable at any distance.
