I'm ready to buy my first pcp. Will have to get a hand pump 'cause I can't afford a tank, etc. And I don't own a car. After reading about the Crosman " barrel lottery" I'm beginning to have second thoughts about a Discovery, Mrod, or prod- the one I thought best for my financial situation - on social security. Are all crosman barrels a hit or miss proposition ? I've bought 5 air rifles in the past 4 years and only kept my HW 30S. The rest were returned to the vendors. I won't go there again if I can help it. Maybe I should be content with my HW 30S and modified (13 fpe) 2289. I'd really like to reach out to 50 yds though. Suggestions ? I can't afford any high end pcp.

Randy, there are many of the members on this Forum that shoot the Discovery [including me.] I have done nothing to the internals of the rifle since I received it new in 2013. It is supper accurate; more accurate than I am. There have been issues with the Marauder .22 in the past; but I don't hear that much any more.
Good luck with your decision.

+1. My Discovery shoots great with nothing done to it, and I've only ever seen 2 or 3 cases where people had issues with a Disco's barrel. I know nothing personally of Mrod barrels, but I believe the reason for most people's hesitation with buying a .22 Mrod now is mostly just from reading old stories about how bad they used to be. From what I've heard lately, the .22 barrels are just fine.
Not that you asked, per se, but I'm going to recommend the Disco to you if you are handpumping. I have to start using all of my weight to get the pump handle down once I get to 2000psi on my Disco. Now granted I'm only about 5'4" and 115 lbs, but based on the fact that you are drawing SS, you probably won't have any fun pumping it up to 2600+psi every 30 shots or so, and therefore won't enjoy or use an Mrod nearly as much as you would a Disco. A Disco is more than capable of great accuracy at 50 yards. Just the other day I was sniping empty 12ga shells about 9 for 10 at 54 yards, and could've done much better if the wind was calmer and I had a better AO scope. A 2" spinner was too easy at 60 yards and I had to step down to the 1.5" to make it any challenge. Even at that, I still haven't gotten all the accuracy out of it I can. I'll have an 2.5-10 AO scope next Saturday, so I'll update my thread(the link in my sig) then.

I have owned my Disco for a few years now. GREAT gun, very accurate. I would buy one again in a minute. I was just out today working with her for squirrel season. Worked through a few pellets and settled on the JSB Jumbo Diablo 15.89. The heavies are close but the 15's work out a bit longer range.
Using hold over i can smack broken clay Pigeon's at 100yards pretty consistently. That is or very close to moment of Squirrel head!! That's little wind rested and bags at the rear.
The Mrod is heavier and as stated requires a higher res pressure. Great gun don't get me wrong. Keep in mind the Disco without a shroud is LOUD. Close to a .22 rimfire if that is a concern.

Thanks for the replies. Probably will get a .22 Disco to better deal with the almost perpetual wind here in NW Arizona. I'm 5 ft 10 in, 180 lbs and in good shape so pumping probably won't be a problem. Since this will ( maybe !) be the last air rifle I 'll buy I want it to fit as well as possible. Read about putting the Discovery in a Challenger stock whose lop can be adjusted to 16 in. - which is what my 2289 has and feels just right. I'd really like to buy a .25 Synrod but am hesitant about pumping it to 2500 psi.

Pumping to 2500 PSI is not so bad, its when you get past that point, I think if yo can do a .25 Marauder a 2800 PSI fill may be as high as you will need to go, but a lot of shooters set it up for the 2500 PSI. I have 2 Disco's and will not part with either one! They are light weight easy to shoulder and great for a person with a short LOP like myself. A very fun shooter as well as small game AG.
Good luck and have fun...

I will second this. I'm young (5'4", 115lb) but I can pump up to 2000psi before I start having trouble. I'm sure I could get to 2500 with some determination and a couple breaks for both me and the pump. Also, I know if I ever get a Mrod, I'm certainly not selling my Disco to fund it.

For what it's worth, I'm 6-1/185 and I find it easier to pump my Disco to 2,000 psi than to pump my road bike tires to 105psi. Granted, it takes more pumps for the disco, but the pumping pressure/effort, is easier.
My Disco typically shoots around 3/4", 5-shot groups at 50 yards from a full rest under ideal conditions. I've taken one ground squirrel with a head shot at 44 yards, resting the gun against a tree. Aside from that, all the GS's I've shot have been at 50 feet or less.
I love my little Disco, but if I ever get to where I'm shooting at any game at or beyond 50 yards, I'm gonna step up to a .25 cal Marauder. I almost want to see what it's like to pump one up to 2800 psi. ;)

Hand pumping an Mrod to 3000psi is not an issue guys, doesn't even take that long. I'm not a big guy, but I'm not a small guy either - Average sounds good - and as long as you don't really shoot below 2000Psi, you'll be able to pump it up no worries, but even if it's from say 1000psi and you're pumping to 3000psi, you may break a slight sweat, but nothing crazy.
my stats:
Height: 6ft
Weight: 154lbs

Hey Luke,
I don't know about you, but I've found that the key is to take it slow. When I pump up the Disco, normally from around 1100 psi back to 2000 psi, I do 20 slow pumps, take a couple minute break to let the pump cool down, then repeat. Aside from my wife constantly calling me a nerd :P, it's not bad at all.
On the other hand, if I were doing a lot of target shooting, or if the back yard was infested with zombies, I suppose I'd want a high pressure tank, but for the shooting I'm doing, pumping is fine.
Ron.

my 2240, 2260 and disco are all great shooters
my m rod .22 not so much
my mrod .25 seems ok so far but I havent got out to 50 yds yet or had a decent scope on it

not horrible but 60 pumps per 16 shots does get a little old with the .25
