I have a private aircraft and I typically cruise 8-12,000. I would like to transport my pcp guns and tanks when I visit friends or maybe even to Airgun events.
Does anyone have any experience doing the same? Can I fill my small cf tank and gun to capacity? I want to avoid having to hunt down fill locations.
I don't know enough about expanding gasses to know if it's safe enough. The brain trust on this forum is awesome so I thought I would ask.
Thanks for any help.

;D I would reduce the pressure in the rifle and air tank just for the sake of additional safety margin and jus get the tank topped off upon arrival at your destination . Not science just my paranoia ::) ;D

Thanks for the quick reply Don. That is my strategy unless someone can tell me the saftey margins are not violated with me launching from basically sea level and climbing to 12K'. However, I would like to avoid finding a refill station as not everywhere I go is convenient to a scuba shop, etc.
ps I have had potato chip bags popping at 14,000' before and don't want it to be a 4500psi closed vessel.
Still hoping for that "science" answer 😀

From an atmospheric standpoint it would be the same as you hiking up Mauna Kea or other high mountain hunting.... Air pressure reduces roughly by 25% each 10,000 feet, that is why you require oxygen above 12,500 feet while flying. So, from 14# psi at sea level, you're approximately at 10#psi at 10,000. 18,000 feet you're at half sea level or 7#.
Would I be worried.... no.... should you be worried.... :D

Average sea level air pressure is about 14psi. Even if you went into space I don't think going from 14psi to 0psi is a big difference considering the pressure inside the tank. A potato chip bag containing a lower pressure, say, maybe, 20psi, a decrease in ambient pressure of up to 14psi can create a significant pressure difference and pop the bag. So in conclusion, air tanks are safe, potato chip bags are not.

Thanks guys for the thoughts. Sounds logical to me.
Anyone else out there flying privately with pcp's?
