Title: How can one quiet a mild mannered rifle (Anschutz 8002 S2)
Post by: samosho on August 25, 2015, 02:54:24 AM
Hi folks. I'm a newbie that would like to practice target shooting for fun at something like 10m or thereabouts. Trouble is that I don't have access to that much distance indoors and I'm in the city with neighbors all around. My immediate neighbors on the one side are fine with me practicing but I also have several  neighbors one lot over that are only maybe 50 - 70 feet away that I don't even know. Yes, welcome to the life in the city with apartment houses or condos close by.

Anyway, I invested in this rifle thinking that it would be quiet enough since it was listed on the PA site with a loudness level of "1-Low". Well, I'd like it quieter still. Any ideas?

This rifle has a shroud that extends about 8 1/2 inches beyond the actual rifled barrel. Would inserting something like a couple of washers spaced apart by say an inch or so inside the shroud turn the "unoccupied" or excess shroud into a moderator of sorts?

Happy shooting to all,
John

Tough situation living in the city with limited space. I feel for you.
Using different length spacers and washers in the empty space in the shroud should quiet ig down a little more. Just be careful to make sure everything is centered to the bore. Otherwise there will be clipping & accuracy issues.

Another way to go would be to turn the power down if you can since you already have limited space you dont need high velocities. This would increase the shot count & lower the noise.

I wouldn't turn down the power any since its already a low power 10m target rifle and adjusted from factory as such.
First try just a cap over the end of the shroud with a hole in it in the correct location.  8.5" is alot of space for a low power .177.
Do you know if the barrel is vented to the shroud behind the muzzle?
Then maybe try additional washers and spacers.

Some guns w/ built in moderators, such as FX 400 have no baffles just a hollow air space to absorb the blast.

I checked out pics of your gun on Pyramyd... beautiful!

"IF" barrel end LDC comes off and end cap can be removed ... YES it can be made much more effective.

Touchy subject and we can't speak openly in the forum about such things, So ... If a mechanical type the info on what to do is out there, if not PM me and can advise in private.

Ricky,  yes, there are advantages as well as disadvantages with living in the city, thanks.

I wouldn't know how to adjust the power and supposedly this thing gets 200 shots per filling, more than the 30 or so that I get with another PCP. Haven't had a chance to shoot it much yet.

Fred, I don't know if the barrel is vented to the shroud behind the muzzle. If I understand your question I don't believe so. Are you asking if before the pellet leaves the rifled barrel, there are vents in the barrel to the shroud? All I can tell is that the shroud extends about 8.5" past the rifled barrel.

And I do like the looks of the rifle. Am planning on seeing how well I can shoot off hand. I can't believe how the guys and gals can ski and then shoot, even in a blizzard. Amazing. I just want to see if I can not wobble so much ;)

Scott, I'm such a newbie that I don't know what LDC stands for, sorry. I can imagine what an end cap may be but this rifle doesn't have one, unless it's the washer or spacer that centers the end of the muzzle inside the shroud.

It seems like there's a hollow space with no baffles like Fred described the FX 400 although I've never seen one. PM incoming.

Cheers and straight shooting to all,
John
