Thank God I didn't move my driveway alarm away from the chickenhouse, or I wouldn't have any chickens left! I heard it go off just once a few minutes ago so I ran downstairs, suited up, and went outside with the Disco to see what it was. Lo and behold, a coon had pushed the chickenwire up from the ground and had gotten inside the pen! When I turned on the headlight to see what was going on, I saw eyes shining from where the pen was, so I ran out there to find it had made it inside the pen and was frantically running all around inside to find its way back out. After a few seconds, it climbed up the corner of the pen, but since we had put a top on it, it still couldn't get out. I ran over to the corner and before it had time to climb back down, I put the pellet right behind its right eye! It dropped and squirmed for 10-20 seconds before it finally stopped. I'll tell you, procrastinating to move the alarm sure proved to be useful in this case!
This is probably the same one that raided my birdfeeders again the night before last. It was about the same size as the first one, so I am guessing it was probably a sibling or a mate (or both) I'll have to check its gender tomorrow since I forgot to do it while I was out there, but I know the first one was a female.
BTW, I checked on the chickens as soon as I was sure that the coon was down for the count, and all of them were just fine and seemed completely oblivious to the events that had just unfolded less than 10 feet away.
