Title: Scope for Beeman R9?
Post by: SlowBykr on August 11, 2015, 05:06:45 PM
I placed my order today for a Beeman R9 in .22 from Pyramyd air.  Now it's time to pick a scope.  I splurged on the gun, so need to keep the scope inexpensive for now, <$60.

I like the Centerpoint 3x9x40 that came with my Trail NP.  New or used is fine.

I don't know anything about scope rings, so I welcome advice on that too.  Are picatinny and weaver scope rings cross-compatible?

Thanks!

You will need dovetail/11mm rings.  CenterPoint or Hammers for the price point.

This comes with a mount that should work and it has a stop pin (needed on springers)

EDIT: This comes with a one piece mount as well!

One piece mounts tend to work better on springers.  JMO

Your R9 from PA will come with a set of medium 1" scope rings, so you're good for up to a 44mm scope, so focus on the scope. For the $ & gun power, I'd opt for the Center Point 4-16 X 44 AO from Walmart for a budget buy. Mine came with them, but I put a 1 piece mount on anyway.

The Hammers already come with a one piece mount.  I have one, Excellant scope for the money, very good value.

I've had one and a good recommendation, but I like this one better.  It will cost $75 but well work spending $15 over your budget.

I'm liking the 4-16x44 Centerpoint, and I'm willing to spend the few extra bucks for it, if I can find it.  Walmart.com says it's out of stock.

When a scope has three turrets, is the third one for adjusting the objective?  I noticed the 4-16x44 Centerpoint description on Walmart.com says its parallax setting is 10-infinity.  Is that the same thing as having an adjustable objective?

Yes, it serves the same purpose...it is a side focus, easier to use than an AO scope.

That turret is for adjusting the light of the IR reticle. Still front AO. Visit a store, as .com is usually not correct for what's available in store.

There is a fairly decent UTG/Leapers IR 3-12x44 scope on the members classifieds right now, courtesy of yours truly. It's listed for $75 + shipping, and comes with weaver rings, but I have some dovetails I'll throw in at no additional cost if you want it.

I went to my nearby Walmart and found a Centerpoint 4-16x40 on sale for $30.  I can't post a link, but it's the one listed for $119 on the Crosman website.  It seems geared toward firearms, but at $30, I figured I'd give it a shot.

My R9 delivers tomorrow.  I'll update after I get it mounted.

Thanks for your input everybody.

Putting a junk scope on a world class rifle is like putting a burlap sack on Miss America IMHO. General rule of thumb is spend the same $$ on both. I'm selling a RWS34P because I've been using a mediocre scope on one of my LVGs, as soon as it's sold I'll be buying a good scope for it.

My R9 was delivered on schedule- thanks Pyramyd Air.  I mounted the scope and plumbed the reticle today.  So far I have no complaints with the scope.  I thought the illuminated reticle was gimmicky, but it turned out to be helpful when plumbing the reticle in my dark basement.  The optics seems as clear, or clearer than the Centerpoint that came with my Trail NP.  I'm very much pleased with the scope, but my experience with scopes is pretty limited.

I am a little disappointed in the R9, however.  The trigger and finish quality is great and I've yet to test for accuracy, but the shot cycle has a strong buzz that's both felt and heard for about a third of a second.  As far as the shot cycle goes, my Trail NP is much nicer.  I'm not crazy about needing to tune such an expensive (to me anyway) air gun.  Still thinking about what to do next.

Consider its other attributes as you are slightly annoyed with the spring buzz and know that it can be easily reduced/eliminated.

mine was pretty buzzy. i was learning to live with it, but the spring broke and I ended up putting a pg2 kit in. Now its just a snap thunk.

Thanks guys.  I'm going to shoot it as-is for a while and get a tune kit later if the buzz still bugs me.
