Title: 300m shooting days.
Post by: MJP on July 31, 2015, 04:05:29 AM
Had a 300m track reserved for 4 days, with Timo, Teemu, Tero and some other people who's names don't start with T  ;D
I had my .357 with me and managed to hit some targets at 300m. We did shoot at a cast iron pot with Timo, he with the .338 and me with the .357 I'll add a pic of the pot.
I did also manage to hit beer cans wit Teemu's .308 corsair and one mosaic tile at 300m. The corsair did shoot really good.
Teemu and Timo will add pics I hope.
The pics open up to a folder, there you can see my rig, and the booster setup I built.
The gun is also completely hand made excluding the tank.
Shooting 156gr at 278m/s on air and 340m/s on helium.

Tell us more about the rifle.  Can you post some more photos of the rifle?  Also what kind of air supply is that on the dolly?  Take a couple of photos of that as well.

Thanks

In this case helium supply. Normal lab gas panel is used to regulate the supply to the boosters low pressure side from one 200bar scuba, and direct feed via panels high pressure side with aux shutoff valve and bottle gauge from another scuba 200-300bar to the booster high pressure side. Max booster output with 7bar working pressure is 390bar and with 10bar output is 450bar.

The dolly houses the gas panel and booster on one side and otherside houses two scuba tanks.

I'll post more pics of the gun soon.
It's a af style custom frame.

The gun is completely made from bar stock, or tubing. Only the tank and hogue grip are bought items. I don't do nuts and bolts or springs but they don't count.
Material is 6082T6 for the main parts, valve is stainless steel with peek seal and the breach lever is gr2 ti.
Valve body is brass and tank adapter that houses gauge and fillnipple is also stainless.
Barrel is from evanix blizzard with muzzlebrake made for it. Brake is drawn by Timo and made and blued by me.

And some pics of the gun.

Nice shooting! In my limited knowledge of long range airgun shooting, quite an accomplishment for such a caliber. Nice build on the rifle, you obviously have talent! Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks guys. You and me both Bob, I too wish I had more time and opporunity to shoot long range. Not too many long ranges around to shoot in here where I live.

Awesome stuff........300 yards with a 357 is amazing!

Also, i love the looks of your rig.  It looks really strong.  Airforce needs to really follow suit

nice rig and rifle, other than the stainless and muzzle break kinda looks like my Texan 45, what kind of power is it producing ?

We really had great time. This has been our summer time "shooting camp" 3 years so we can call it a tradition by now ;D  I didn't take so many pics but here are few, click the pictures for bigger view:

My gun:

The same cast iron pot lid, closer view:
(http://i60.tinypic.com/5mwowg_th.jpg) (http://oi60.tinypic.com/5mwowg.jpg)

This is how I would like it to be all the time. When saw this through spotting scope, I didn't want to spoil the group with fifth shot:
(http://i61.tinypic.com/1r5aao_th.jpg) (http://oi61.tinypic.com/1r5aao.jpg)

This was pretty normal 10 shot group. There really are 10, those couple holes in 8 ring are little bigger than others:
(http://i57.tinypic.com/210bpcy_th.jpg) (http://oi57.tinypic.com/210bpcy.jpg)

By the way, both lengths of my boattail bullets stabilized perfectly but no accuracy. I think bearing surface area may be insufficient as it is quite short.

Thanks Cedric
I really do like the looks and the straight flow design of the af guns, but they are way too flimsy for the power I'm after. And there's one 900mm long .457 on my table waiting machining to the frame.  ;)

What bullet are you using?

I shoot couple cans at 300m and metal plate my .308 corsair.
(http://i8.aijaa.com/t/00982/13921797.t.jpg) (http://aijaa.com/TX31bR)
And testing that .257...
(http://i4.aijaa.com/t/00667/13921799.t.jpg) (http://aijaa.com/j8HLE1)
(http://i2.aijaa.com/t/00022/13921801.t.jpg) (http://aijaa.com/hIWmCU)
(http://i4.aijaa.com/t/00036/13921802.t.jpg) (http://aijaa.com/lLm4AC)
Had difficulties find right shooting pressure and also had issues with O-ring's in probe. Didn't find that "right" bullet yet. This test shot group was at 100m and I didn't count how many bullet's I shot
(http://i7.aijaa.com/t/00915/13921771.t.jpg) (http://aijaa.com/pm2Njg)

Eventually guys also tested that .257 and there was also other .257 We realised that hard cast bullet could work better than pure Pb and 2 % Sn...Maybe...It is long way to find out that which bullet is working best and find right pressure because one point Marko noticed that 195 bar shootting pressure worked better than 250-280bar. Which is kinda sad because that platform could produce serious power with larger pressure..

Shooting groups at 100m with Corsair .308 and had pretty good group coming but then I fail 7th shot and wind rise suddenly and 8th and 9th went wrong and then wind blows target paper loose but still 10th shot went that same group than other 6 shots
(http://i5.aijaa.com/t/00467/13921796.t.jpg) (http://aijaa.com/DFhZCP)

So 7 shot group was 17.5mm ctc but those 3 other missed shot spoiled whole group.. :-[

You're shooting in Finland?  Are there many big bore airgunners Suomessa?
Title: Re: 300m shooting days.
Post by: rintafile on August 02, 2015, 02:01:13 PM
Yes we shoot in Finland. We organized silhouette competitions and group competitions  There is usually 10-20 participant's at least in silhouette but hard to say how many big bore airgunners are totally. Some guys don't take part those competitions

Mostly Accurate molds 34-220S slightly modified to fit exactly to my land diameter. NOE's 341 250Gr. SP is equally good.

If we count all sold SamYangs here may be hundreds but they remain mostly silent.
Serious long range shooters only less than ten AFAIK.

About 8 days ago I took my .30 cal. Extreme Big Bore hunter to Tri County Sportsman's Club for some 300 yard shooting. I shot a new personal best of - ten shots - in 5.1" inches. 7 of the 10 shots were within 2.35" inches. This was done at 3800 psi, regulated, with a 154 gr. RCBS Silhouette bullet in which the mold was modified by Mr. Ohlen. I had the gas check shank removed and the rear band opened up .002" inches. The bullet was cast in 1/2 pure lead and 1/2 linotype.  The bullets were lubed with Imperial Sizing lube and sized to .3103"  The group was shot with the Neil Clague air stripper attached. My rifle seems to shoot a little better with it on. I think the air stripper acts as a barrel harmonics dampener. The wind was running 0 to 5 mph. You have to wear head phones when shooting at the rifle range because of the firearms guys there. With the air stripper on and headphones the sound is like a big sneeze.
It would be fun to organize an annual national long range shoot. There are very few-if any-other long range air gunners here in Ohio. It would be fun to meet some other people with similar interest.

I got a muzzle brake waiting for installation on to my Corsair. It should be placed soon and I hope it helps remove recoil which is annoying when we changed a new spring on Corsair.Last spring went limb...  Also air waist was huge so TPL twist one of springs on wormtap(is that right word on English?) for couple days to shrink that spring a bit.
It is been hard to get right spring on that gun my friend get it custom worked some place. It is pity that we don't have longer shooting range than 300m available at this moment... So next thing to do is get good groups at 300m.

MJP,

How long is your barrel?

Joe
Title: Re: 300m shooting days.
Post by: MJP on August 09, 2015, 06:06:56 PM
It's either 525mm or 550mm, hafto check. Originally from evanix blizzard.

Thanks.  Sounds like its a good barrel.

It's accurate when mounted on a sturdy frame. So yes a good barrel but sadly it's so short, only 525mm.
Two more weeks on holiday, I hope to get my new mill assembled and installed. I have machining centers at work that I can use but it's nice to have one that's your own and nobody doesn't mess with it.
