Title: Recommend a good U.S. tuner for Weihrauch springers?
Post by: Frankly on July 25, 2015, 12:45:49 AM
I'm new and not looking to ruffle any feathers, I just would like to find a good professional quality air-gunsmith to tune my Weihrauch rifle into a smooth, moderately powered, non-twangy yet smooth cocking shooter with a nice trigger. In a reasonable amount of time and for less than what I paid for the gun!

I've owned a Watts tuned gun and want that level, but Paul is not taking new work.

Scott (Motorhead) is a member of the forum and well respected tuner!

Motorhead is very well regarded here.

I have first hand experience with Rob Hawkins and was very pleased with the outcome.

I think that Paul Watts has temporarily stopped taking in any new work.

Good luck.

Frank,
Sadly here on the Left coast ... postage to/from will eat a C note.
* but can indeed service / tune your HW into what you seek.
I too ( will be shortly ... on Vorteks Suggested tuners list )

Pm me if interested so we can discuss the particulars of rifle you have and get a better handle on realistic expectations.

Regards,
Scott

I've got one example of JohnT's work, and I am most impressed. He's close to you, also. That ought to help on shipping....

Lee Haire aka SHOOTIST in Springfied MA tuned my HW50S and I am pleased with the result.  Inasmuch as he's a bit closer, you might save some on the onerous shipping costs.

Good luck.

I have heard great things on Motorhead, Shootist is a super from what I have heard, Paul Watts does outstanding work, David Furr has tuned many of my rifles and he is outstanding as well. There are also many other members here who do great work, and most will supply a list of happy customers.

I'll give another vote for Motorhead ;)  Here is my most recent tune from Motorhead, my HW97K Thumbhole.  Scott did a full tip to tail tune with a Vortek SHO install.  This rifle is awesome!!  If you scroll down through you will see the chronograph results.  Standard Deviation of 2 on two different pellets....10.3 grain heavies and the lighter 8.64 grain H&N's. Great shooting rifle, in fact I used it on the last 30 yard bench rested target match here on GTA and shot a 198/200....such a smooth and consistent rifle.  You will not be disappointed with his work 8)

If your find a tuner that can turn your rifle around quickly you may want to ask why. In good economic times really good tuners usually are booked for several weeks.

I have heard Scott is not only fast, but very good. I would have no problem shipping him a rifle. You will see his praises sang around here and other forums as well. Just type in "motorhead air rifle tuning" and you might find he is an exceptional choice. :)

I would also vouch for Lee Haire (aka SHOOTIST) as he tuned my Beeman R9 (really a rebranded Weihrauch) and I'm very happy with the results.

I haven't had any work done by the PA guy, but I hear he is awesome.  I have used Motorhead (Scott), and I will continue to.  He is worth the little bit of freight cost.

Ended up going with John Thomas based on your recommendations and his proximity. Had Pyramyd ship the new gun directly to him, which saved a fee, and then a few weeks later I received a perfectly tuned new HW50s. He kept me informed of what was going on, was friendly and reasonably priced, not too backed up (although busy enough I had to wait a cycle, which is a good sign!) and I now recommend him highly.

I'm sure the other guys are good too but with the cost of shipping really adding up it makes sense to find a good tuner closer to home. Thank you John!

Yes!  The cost of shipping will tear you a new one.

Does Lee advertise his business contact info?  I'm about 40 minutes from Springfield MA and have a Weihrauch I'd like tuned. I PM'd but no response yet.

Last communication I had with Lee he was in the process of moving. And unfortunately he said he was through tuning. Requests for tuning dropped off to nothing so he took that as a sign.
Just passing along what I know.
I would recommend Scott or Paul for sure.
And most definitely my sidekick Rocker1. :)

Have a couple of HW50s videos on my YouTube but I can't post them here so search for Frank Petronio. Thanks again.
