Title: 50mm scope on S510
Post by: robertr on July 14, 2015, 01:51:40 AM
I am looking at buying an S510 , my plan was to put on the 50mm scope I have on my 350 magnum. I have high rings ordered, just wondering if there will be enough clearance or do I need a smaller scope? Thanks, Robert.

Based on what you've said, the answer is "probably" or "most likely" but not a clear "yes."  A more definite answer is possible if you tell us what scope it is (so an exact outside objective lens dimension will be known) and what rings you are thinking about (not all "High" rings are the same).

I have a Hawke Airmax 3-9x50, I ordered accushot high rings, made by Leapers or Utg. Actual measurement is 62mm or 2 7/16 in.

Probably one of those, get the gun and see if it fits deal. I will have to find the measurements of the scope rings height, they are not listed on the website I bought them from.

Motorhead, I see you have a S410, could I bother you for the measurement from the top of barrel to the top of the reciever? My rings should be here in a couple of days, I should be able to figure it out from there.

Went to Leapers' website and found the measurments for the rings, got out the calipers, did a little math and from what I came up with the scope should fit with a few mm's to spare plus the distance from top of barrel to top of reciever. Thanks again for your help.

The 10-shot magazine, inserted, is higher than the receiver.  You will likely need high rings for the scope tube to clear the magazine/receiver more so than for the scope bell to clear the barrel.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too, thanks for the heads up.

Here's what the a 50mm objective scope looks like on my s510.  I'm *pretty* sure the rings the high ones from UTG.

Beautifull rifle, looks like I might even be able to use the lens caps too. Thanks for the pic.

Actually, after getting home from work today, I changed out the UTG (Leapers) 30 mm 2-piece high rings for UTG 30 mm 2-piece medium rings.  The mounted scope is a Hawke Endurance, 6-14X 50 mm on an AirArms S-410 XTC.  Barrel clearance went from just under 1/2 inch to around 1/4 inch.  Clearance of the underside of the scope went from just under 3/8 inch to about 1/16 inch.

2-piece high rings:

2-piece medium rings:

Again, the limiting factor for scope ring height for the AirArms with a removable magazine is more likely to be clearance for the magazine rather than the size of the 50 mm scope bell.

Thanks TCups, another beauty, I like the scope close to the barrel with the medium rings as long as it is still comfortable to shoot. I will see how the high rings work out.

Robert:
Thank you.  A word of advice, based on my relatively limited experience with PCP's.  The *problem* with PCP's is that the compression tube is mounted under the barrel, between the barrel and the stock.  The result is that, in a conventional stock, the barrel of a PCP sits about 1 inch higher than the barrel of a powder burner barrel in the same size stock.

My second and only other PCP is a BSA Scorpion .177.  It came with a carbine stock and is a much smaller, lighter air rifle (which was the appeal for me).  Unfortunately, the original stock was all but un-shootable for me.  Even mounting the scope on the barrel, little more than a lower jaw weld rather than a cheek weld was possible.  And it was nothing near a fit for my large frame.  This necessitated a custom stock with a riser cheek piece and an adjustable butt piece for the stock.  This added time and more $ to get the BSA "right" for me.  The custom stock is pretty much a stylish copy of the original carbine stock modified with a cheek riser for a LH shooter.  Notice what it took to put the stock at the proper level?  Worth the investment?  Yes, indeed. The BSA Scorpion wears a Hawke Varmint II 6x24 42 mm mounted with two-piece dovetail to Weaver rails and Burris Signature Low rings.   The bell of the 44 mm scope is within a couple of millimeters of the barrel.

You will also notice many Benji M-Rod shooters also change out for custom stocks (for example, Corcoran stocks).

The AirArms S-410 thumbhole, though, is in effect, a custom stock as is, I believe the non-thumbhole, high cheeked stock on the S-510.  Shooting LH limits the choice of stocks for me, though.  The LH Thumbhole was available when I bought my AirArms, and was a good fit, out of the box.  If you have the chance, you should definitely check your proposed purchase for size and fit, unless you are willing to customize later.

TCups, another beautiful rifle, I am kind of used to the high scope position on my 350 with the scope base and the high rings but a little lower would be nice. I can see what you mean by the scope height on your Scorpion, good job on the cheek riser. I have Burris rings on my 350, I had to borrow them from my MR1 pb after I broke one of my weaver rings, need med rings for the 350.
I am thinking maybe a month before I can buy the S510, till then pictures will have to do.
