Title: pellet for 2289g
Post by: bigfish123 on June 24, 2015, 11:58:00 PM
I've got a 2289g that I put a steel breach, metal barrel band, TKO, power adjuster, flat top piston and valve, super sear. I wasn't getting the accuracy I was expecting with the stock barrel or a 14.5" barrel from Crosman so I got a 16" custom barrel from AC MODS. I had 3 tins of Daisy's 14 grain precision max with graphite coating that I get 5 shot cloverleaf hole groups at 10 and 25 yards. Sounds good only problem is I've ran out of the graphite coated pellets and the .22cal pointed pellets from Daisy don't shoot the same and I've had no luck with Crosman 14.3 HP or domed magnums.  What are some other pellets that shoot good.

JSB Diabolo Exact Jumbo .22 Cal, 15.89 Grains.
Try those. Works great in my 1322.

That stinks my 1322 seems to shoot about everything well. Got barrel from Mellon Air. I usually use the Crosman points for general pesting. I also get good results with the h&n ftt 14.66 gr and JSB 18.13gr

Up date. I tried JSB 18, 15, and 13 grain pellets they all shoot great in my QB 79 and my FDPCP's but not in the 2289 so they will be used. Which leaves me with the Daisy pointed 14 grain that shoots good 12 yards and under at various power levels and the barrel set screw loose. Past 12 yards they open to about an inch with the screw tight or loose. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Wow none of the JSB's shot well in the 2289! Check the barrel I know its a custom barrel, but my barrel from Mellon air had burrs at the transfer port that was nicking pellets. Only reason I figured it out was I collected the pellets I was shooting. They all had a 2 lines on the side of the heads, 1 deep and 1 lighter. I looked down the barrel and sure enough I could see what was causing them. After I smoothed them out she shot anything and everything well.
Make sure the steel breech doesn't have any burrs or sharp areas that could effect the pellet.
Make sure barrel band screws are tight and the top breech screw that secures the barrel.
Also, since you are saying no matter what barrel you are using the accuracy is bad. Is your breech screw still the factory black one, that little one below the bolt? It has a tendency to break when u over tighten. See if it's there and has a good grip.
Try some H&N pellets they have a good selection and are quality pellets. If I try a new type I'll get a good amount of my air guns that'll like them.

open sight or scope... my 2289 clone will shoot just about anything to hit a quarter at 30 yards... nothing I have likes the daisy pointed...

inspect the barrel is the leade smooth or abrupt is there a burr at the transfer port... how is the crown...  any probs visible in the rifling...

is the transfer port leaking, is the bolt oring leaking...

Great advice and couldn't have said it better myself.

I would add it's important to check the type of skirt on the pellet you're using and look at how it seats on the bolt. Deep rear skirt pellets can allow the bolt tip to enter much father and tend to hang over the transfer port a bit inside the barrel and when you fire, the blast of air can deform the skirt affecting accuracy. I've found JSB to be soft and easily deformed in this manner but I've only really experienced it with the stock bolt.

I have had great results with the Discovery bolt in my 2289 and I'm currently also having great results with a V-probe bolt I bought from powermaxhipac dot com.

The pellet of choice for me are RWS Super H point which are hollow point. Not great for longer distances as I believe they loose velocity quicker but they are super consistent POI and very effective at around 35 yards or less on targets and chipmunks etc.
That's where my gun shines so that's what I shoot.
