Title: Ruger Air Hawk?
Post by: Kavin2845 on June 21, 2015, 11:47:30 PM
So i ordered a Ruger Air Hawk from Midway USA 2 days ago and am waiting for it to come in, its supposed to be here by Tuesday hopefully it arrives in once piece, the reason i picked up the gun was because first it was on clearance for  $44 bucks and second it a RWS Diana 34 clone and its gonna be a dedicated modding rifle, its basically gonna be a rifle i use to learn the process of tuning and deburring and what not, would help me visualize what all you guys on the forum are talking about when you say your gonna "replace seals" "check hammer" and so on cause every time i read someones tune up thread i have absolutely no idea what part of the gun their talking about and since it is a Diana 34 clone i read that all the mods that work for the Diana work for this, so hopefully i can get this springier shooting better than it actually is, although i heard it is a pretty good air rifle considering the price and shoots 800fps with lead out of the box.

I was just wondering if any of yous guys can point me to a good thread on the basic processes of deburring and disassembling a rifle preferably with pictures so i can visualize and know what to expect when the Ruger ships in. What do you guys think of the Ruger? Ive read that people have modded it and it turned out a nice rifle. This was sort of an impulse buy lol not sure what to expect with this gun im hoping its good but if not ill take it as a good place to learn the basics of air rifle!  ;D

Thanks guys!

You tube videos are your friend.... If pictures are worth a thousand words, video must be worth at least a half million

This is a sticky from over on the Dianawerk.  As mentioned, youtube is a good place to go also.  Good luck with the Airhawk.

Kevin,

You are on exactly the same page as I am. I am hoping mine will show up tomorrow. I also will use it to practice working on. Please update thread as you go.

Hi I have a Blackhawk which is the same as your Airhawk but with syn> stock. I have done alot of things to make it a good springer. The first thing you do is call MM at FD and get a tophat and another barrel sleeve. My Blackhawk is very smooth and shoots in the high 800,s If I can be of any help let me know
Oh and get yourself some blue locktite and moly grease

I'm in the same boat, just ordered the Airhawk, planning to take it apart as soon as it comes for a basic tune and lube. Tons of tuning options for Diana 34, I am just not sure they are all drop in replacements for the Airhawk, need to carefully research sizes and diameters

This'll be a good gun till you can afford  the 34 you talked about. I got one of those Midway Airhawk refurbs for $48. Out of the box trigger pull is 2lbs 12oz. It's pushing 8.6 grs Peak w/c 960fps, Super Mags 858 and Hobbies 1025. Shoots good as is.

Mine arrived today. I shot about 25-45 rounds then decided to jump in. I tore it apart, sanded, polished, lubed, and reassembled. I haven't shot it but the cocking/decocking cycle seems smoother. I'm sure glad this gun came along so cheap. It was worth the price just to experiment with my first disassembly.
Sorry for repetition, I ended up posting in two different threads.

Reading all these tuning threads I've realized I need to build a main spring decompressor, seems pretty easy to build but I was wondering if I could purchase one, did you use one for the ruger disassembly?

I was able to get by without one. My method is to use a wooden block upon which I set a plastic washer smaller than the receiver end cap. I set the barreled action on the washer vertically with the safety hanging over the edge of the block. I lean my weight downward on the barrel to relieve spring pressure as I reach down and push out the two pins that hold the end cap. Then slowly relieve the downward pressure. It does help if you have a third hand for this, especially for reassembly, but I've managed it alone. If you get a brand new, unset spring, you may need a compressor, but once set, it's not too difficult. Of course, try what you are comfortable with at your own risk.

Ha! That's pretty cool! No way I would risk it lol I think I'll just build one have most of the supplies at home

I used a long clamp. Some call it a pipe clamp.

I took off barrel and taped a large fender washer on that end to create a big surface. I used the clamp release the pressure and remove the pins. I backed it off till the second hole in the gun lined up with first hole in trigger and put a pin back in to readjust the clamp. I had to do it in two steps because the threaded portion of my clamp only allowed about two inches of travel. Then i pulled the pin and released the spring the rest of the way. I reversed the procedure for reassembly.

Shot it today. When it first stopped dieseling I thought something broke because it was that much quieter. I even did a penetration test because I couldn't believe it.

My dads first break barrel was an airhawk but after a while the barrel somehow got cocked upwards in the breach block anyway when he got an airhawk on sale for 65$ the stock was un usable and *(&^ on the face with open sights so we put yhe synthetic one on it,  theyre decent for the price but the scope not worthy (ours was blurry) ant the sights are fragile

;D I meant blackhawk and the scope did not work .
