Title: Need Advice and opinions
Post by: FamilyMan811 on June 14, 2015, 12:47:20 AM
It is time to take my addiction to the next level. My Marauder has been wonderful, we have taken so many squirrels,rabbits,crow,birds..I could go on and on. I have decided I want a higher-end Air rifle. I know we have our Cricket lovers here and they seem like a wonderful choice but I have decided on a new FX Wildcat in .25 caliber, I find this gun very functional with the forward side lever action.. claiming 40 shots at 46 fpe and dead nuts with that Smooth Twist every one seems to say is a winner. I have considered Vulcan too as it has a left side mounted forward bolt to allow your finger to remain on the trigger. Reports claim deadly accurate as well with the hammer forged 17:7 twist barrel..the mechanics seem to function more smoothly with the FX in the reports I have read. FX 8 rd mag vs Vulcan 9rd, Vulcan offers synthetic stock with rails... but am leaning FX overall. I am wondering if anyone has felt with Topairgun and Dirt E. Harry? Or Airguns of Arizona? I want to purchase thru someone good and proven. For 100 bucks more than AOA Topairgun will do a 5 day ultrasound leak test, find your magic pellet for you and assure stellar accuracy.

I'm assuming this is something that you will be leaving unmodified other than basic tuning?  I'm an FX fan, although I've never owned one.  I haven't ever been in a possition where I would'nt feel quilty for spending that kind of money on an air gun  :-[. I have shot them, not the wild cat but other modles, and they are nice rifles.  your in a hard place right now, this wouldbe a hard decision for me.  wish the best

Personally I think I'd wait and see how both models shake out and then decide.,

;) I recommend waiting on the FX Wildcat due to the following post
PS: I am considering the FX Impact when it comes out in the fall

They are both top quality guns, but newer models may have small problems/issues, so take that into consideration. Also there is usually one or two things you don't really care for, even on a high end air gun so it's best to hold and shoot one before you buy if at all possible. I find my Cricket magazine fiddly to put in, but a lot of guns are the same, including apparently the Wildcat. Overall though I am amazed at how well the Cricket does so many things so well.

Personally I will not deal with AOA again. Some people have a great experience with them, but far too many complaints. They screwed me over once, so never again. Jim at Precision Airguns has a great reputation and sells the FX line, if I were to get a Wildcat I'd go through him. Never dealt with Topairguns. Leak test is not necessary imo. If it leaks you will know and should just send it back, as well as any other issues when you get it including bad accuracy. I would test different pellets my self, more fun that way. Some people want the peace of mind before purchase so if $100 gives you that then it's worth it to you.

I gotta say with more and more research I am now leaning Vulcan... a Sunday conversation with a most friendly and knowledgeable gentleman named Peter who runs Topgunairguns has given me some first hand, very imformative and unbiased comparisons to FX and Crickets. Vulcan appears to be seriously well manufactured and serviceable. 50-60 laser person 50 fpe shots per fill, even fully finished and polished internal parts... at 26 in it is crazy short and the Turkish Walnut stock is beautifully made. 9 rd mags and reasonable in the mid 30 dollar range, but the Belle of the ball is the 17:7 twist CZ Hammer forged barrel that shoots lasers acording to a number of reviews ..and at 6.47 lbs I think that she may be the one guys..and truth be told the Sunday phone call to Topgunairguns and Peters dedication to his customers and their satisfaction is what is swaying me the most.

I have never heard a bad report on those CZ barrels.
I have heard mixed reviews on the smooth twist. Some love them, some say they are pellet picky and and have poor accuracy in their gun. Never had the smooth twist myself so YMMV.
Only thing that draws me to the Wildcat is the mid cocking. I would probably go with the Vulcan, hoping to see more reviews on it.

The Vulcan has a forward cocking mechanism as well it is reverseable and comes uniquely set on the left side to allow for eye to remain on target as well as finger on trigger

Yes, that is nice.  In one of his videos, he shoots a whole magazine while keeping his right hand on the trigger and cheek welded to the gun and cocks with his left.

Side lever is nicer, but other features and the accuracy seem impressive.  Did you see the target they have with the 25 vulcan? http://www.topgun-airguns.com/Vulcan-25-cal_p_95.html (http://www.topgun-airguns.com/Vulcan-25-cal_p_95.html)  Every shot is in the exact same position between the bull and the ring on top of the bull.

That Vulcan looks sweet! It's very compact and light. Do you know how long the barrel is?

From what I understand the barrel is only 15 in. The gun is 26 in overall. Only 6.5 lbs crazy accuracy being reported I have yet to find a bad review.

Yup that's the tag ... Peter say probably between 30-40 bones but won't know till they arrive. Apparently the optional bolt handle and shroud listed are not necessary on the newer batches of Vulcan just the original version. I can't wait to get mine. Accuracy reports are stellar even out at 100yd+
