Title: XS 12 .22 chrony#s
Post by: slimpickens on May 29, 2015, 01:43:14 AM
Hi all,
I'm looking at an xs 12 for my daughter, but I cannot find any real life chrony#s on the .22 version. Just trying to see if I should stick to .177s or if the.22 may offer a little more fpe so she can use it on bushytails and cottontails. Also will she lose some distance to the lower fps?

thanks for all the help!

530 fps with 7.0 gr RWS Hobbies.  435 fps with 8.3 gr Superdomes.  Both .177 and I would suggest sticking with the .177, this rifle is very light in the power dept.  At least mine is.

That calcs out to 3.5 ft-lbs.  That sounds too light, or my expectations of 6 ft-lb or so for the XS12 is too high.

Well, when the rifle first arrived, I opened it and shot it.  It had a solid little "smack" when it hit the target.  I didn't chrony it but in my excitement, I decided to open it up and "make it better" by cleaning up and polishing the insides and shimming the spring guide for a snugger fit.  I got everything cleaned, lubed and put back together, I even sized the seal down for a "not so tight" fit hoping to get some more "juice" out of it.  Didn't happen that way for me.  This is my first xs12 but not my first tune.  Results didn't go the way I expected.  I was sent another piston seal thinking that I may have sized it down too far and hoping that the fps would come up some with the new seal in now.  Actually lost fps.  It is a tight fitting seal in there and takes some pressure to get it to move.  I wish that I had just left it alone but I do know that it had a lot of oil in it when I opening it up and shooting it the first time.  I could see smoke trailing behind the pellet when I first shot it out of the box.

I'm not complaining here, just sharing what I have experienced with my first one.  It is very easy to cock and shoot and ,at the very least, the trigger sear surfaces need some attention out of the box.  The trigger is loooooong and hard but it's predictable and that is the important part, being predictable.  I may get back in there again and try some more with it to see if I can improve the velocity but this gun is for my son's birthday coming up on June 3rd (8 yo) and he isn't going to care one bit about how fast it shoots, or doesn't.  He just wants to hit what he aims for and this rifle does it!  Surprisingly, it like the RWS 7.0 gr Hobby pellets best and they are cheap compared to the other pellets that I had been testing in it and my son can operate it with ease.  I pretended that this was my rifle and let him use it to see if he would be able to handle it before I give it to him.  He has been asking to shoot it since I put it up and I have to keep moving to a different subject to help keep his mind off of it.  I boxed it back up and set it out of sight and I can't wait to give it to him on his big day!

I really should have addressed your original post intent other than the #s.  This rifle is too light in power for any squirrels or rabbits.   Pest birds at the feeder 25 feet away it would be fine but not the others, at least not with the one I have.

Thanks guys for all the information and help. I think I  am still going to go with a 12, but from Mike M. We had a long conversation Friday and all I can say is it was a pleasure to talk to a knowledgeable nice guy. He did tell me that I should expect something in the 600fps and close to 7.0 ftlbs. That is with a base tune from him and I. Should use jsb 8.4s or h&n ftts. To achieve the best accurate and performance. He also told me that he uses one in his backyard to eliminate pests such as starlings, cottontails "headshot" and squirrels. He also stated that the .22 is very slow and for me to stick with the.177. I'm glad to hear from you guys about the accuracy and the ease of operation, that's what I need for her more than anything. If Mike' 12 ends up being less powerful than expected at least she will have a better air rifle than she does and I can break out her  22/410 for the small game..

Maybe I should call Mike up and see if he has any suggestions for mine.  Overall, it's not an issue for me but I would like it to be at it's best and I am scratching my head as to what I may have done wrong on it.....

It is very easy to operate.  Cocking is sooooo light, the saftey is at the rear of the reciever and large so that is good for little hands.  The safety is automatic so that is nice.  I thought about modifying the stock by cutting some off of the butt to shorten it up and thinning and rounding the foreend but that is just me, I can't leave things alone!  ha ha!  Two more days and it will be his and then we can scheme what he wants done to it, IF anything!

You and your daughter should have a lot of fun with her XS12!  Keep us posted on it and give us some first impressions on what you think and how it shoots.

I had bought a couple Airhawks about a year or so ago and Betty Lou struggled to cock them. I contacted Mike and we worked out a deal and traded the Airhawks for 2 basic tuned XS-12s. I don't know what he considers basic tune but these 2 little gems are sweet. I've heard of guys complaining about the triggers and I have no clue what they are talking about. I don't know what, if anything, Mike did to these triggers but they work great. We turn beer cans upside down on 3" drywall screws at 20 - 25 yds and shoot them until they come off of the screws with Daisy wadcutters. One shot knocks the can over and another well placed shot slaps the can right up and off of the screw.... sometimes. We've shot birds and squirrels at 20 yds.. no problem. Caution: these guns are habit forming. Ours are in .177. I don't think I would go .22 with them.

Bill, is that about the same velocity that you are getting out of your 12s?  I don't know why I should care, it shoots just fine.  Just feel like I am missing something obvious.....
Thanks!

I haven't chronied them but it feels like the may be in the mid to high 500 range with the Daisy wadcutters. Again, I really don't know what Mike did or did not do to ours.

My XS-12 came in today.  I ordered it tuned, it is really nice, I believe it is the most accurate break barrel that I have shot and possibly the slowest.  I bought it for a purpose  and it will fill it nicely.  It has the potential of shooting with my 853.  It cocks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EASY!!!

I ordered it with a Rex 4 power scope, but the scope is on Lilly's 853 and is doing a good job.  I can see another new Rex scope in my very near future.

Since I'm officially in my second childhood, I had to fiddle with the XS-12.  I replaced the trigger return spring with a much lighter one, a major improvement for me.  Fiddle at your own risk.

Three cheers for MM!

My XS12 is shooting Daisy wadcutters 585+ fps and Crosman pointed 600+ with my own lube tune.  I still think it might be a little faster with some kind of shim for the breech seal.  It doesn't protrude at all and not sure what is good to raise it with?  Tried dental floss beneath it but just packs it back down.  Any tips?  But anyway I think it is shooting a wee bit faster as she breaks in.  Money well spent with a 4x32 UTG mil dot scope.

From what he told me is that his base tune is a lube tune he polishes the trigger sear and the cylinder. He makes sure the piston seal is good and he test fires the rifle. Well worth 39.99 to know yo are getting a good working product from him.
And that is in regards to the xs12...with base tune from him high 500s to low 600s and some where around 7ftlbs of energy!!

hope that this helps you guys and I can't wait to get it in and try it out. I will definitely keep you guys posted!!!
