If I were to buy an R1 it would be in .22.  I think the gun is "over-sprung" in .177.

the 20cal is also a good choice in the HW80 or R1!

The R1 in .22 would be my choice, I've had my .22 HW 80 ( Beeman R1 equivalent sort of ) since the mid 80s and it has been my No1 Hunting Gun and has never let me down, did also own a .177 HW 77 but never liked it, front heavy and yes it was accurate but so is the old 80 for hunting purposes that is, if we're doing targets that's a different story, gave the 77 to my best friend but still love old faithful. Oh and the R1 has more punch than a 77 so you can zero it at a further hunting distance which really helps shot placement as depending on where you're hunting, if close treed areas the 77s fine but long range shooting on open fields the R1 is definitely the way to go.

I agree Andrew a good HW80/ R1 gun in .22cal is a hard all round gun to beat for shootability, accuracy and quality their just and exelent rifle. I have several in .22cal and 20cal and for a good mid range gun 75/80yds it will do the task at hand, by the way the R1 is basicaly an HW80 with different clothing on their made by the same company Beeman just put their name on them, Beeman is just the importer Weihrauch is the manufacture.
