Its finally time... I leave in the am to go Michigan to spend the week with Brent at Extreme Big bores. We will be working on a few upgrades to my gun.... New breech, possible slide magazine, carbon fiber sleeve, muzzle brake and I have my master stock with me to meet with his stock guy to hopefully CNC a few stocks..... and a few more ideas that I hope we have time to build.... I will be posting pics and progress every day from Brents shop. Stay tunned, this should be alot of fun!!!!!!
-
I am jealous Mike. I've been there. Great guys and they do great work. Particularly interested in the carbon fiber sleave. Why not also go to a titanium air tube and cut a couple of pounds? Brent has done these before.
-
We got started today...... We cut the barrel off and re-threaded for the new muzzlebrake. We also installed the carbon fiber sleeve and got the breech roughed in... Had a few setbacks but we prevailed!!!! Brent is one talented man. I am very pleased with the results so far..

Brent had to put together some guns today so I Finished my master and we got the breech close to done. we will finish the breech and the magazine tomorrow, then off to Brents stock guy thursday. I may still put vent slots in the forearm of the stock.... Not sure yet..... Here are a few more pics......
-
Brent Got the breech and bolt done today..... I mounted the accessory rails and mounted the harris bipod reciever on the bottom of the forearm. Started working on manual indexing 3 shot slide magazine. Should finish that tomorrow.. The gun is really shaping up and I am super excited. At a later date I may fit it with a rotary mag but for now I am going with a three shot slide mag that I designed.
-
Come on guys..... no feed back???
-
Been watching!!! That is looking amazing, can't wait to see when it's done.Very nice work sofar 8) p.s not sure about how vent holes would look? Defiantly not a bad idea to try and lighten it up though
-
Are you gonna tell us what gun it is?
Tom
-
Its the 408 by Brent @ extreme big bore.... but this build is named ALPHA 40.
-
looking good.
how 'bout some details on this build ?
-
Watching with "extreme" interest....
Bob

Geeeez Mike,
"Brent had to put together some guns today so I Finished my master" . . . boy, I hope one of those guns Brent is finishing is mine . . . you must be the reason my Extreme is taking so long to get built . . . grumble, grumble :D :D :D :D

Ron- the barrel is a tj liner with 1/32 twist and a custom carbon fiber sleeve from clearwater composites with a 1/8 wall thickness. The muzzelbrake I ordered from Accuracy Systems in Byers Colorado... They are super guys and highly recomend them based on my experience. The breech is made of steel... Brent felt it would be safer than aluminum due to the high pressures his gun uses. The stock is a master That I created. The picatinny is Magpul and the bipod reciever and bipod is made by harris bipods. I designed the RVA thanks to Bob Stern.... Great Idea Bob! Thanks. The bolt is Brents design And is altererd to accomodate the slide magazine.
Fred- we are picking up your stock today and all the other parts of your gun are made. You won't have long now!
Thanks for the replies guys! gotta get to work.....
-
;D Interesting project I admire the talent and skill required to bring that type of project to completion. I can't wait to see the finished rifle.
-
I'll definitely be watching 8)
Interested to see how the stick mag works?
Joseph
-
We worked on the slide mag today.. This is a manual 3 shot mag. My goal for this gun is to tune for 3 full power shots for hunting. The interesting thing about this mag is that Instead of using spring plungers and dentents to stop the mag slide at each bullet hole, I used magnets perfectly spaced to accomplish the stopping points. I am so picky about scope height and fit and feel of a gun that Brent and I have this gun squashed down as low as we could go...... You literally can not make this gun even 1/16" lower.... so I had tested my theory a few weeks ago and it worked with the magnets.... But you have to be spot on!... So.... How does the mag work? FLAWLESSLY! When you push it with your finger the magnets release and go to the next set of magnets and lock down... Even though I had tested this theory I was In awe of how well it works.... Goes to show ya... If you have an idea and people tell you you are crazy.... You just might be crazy... But it doesn't mean your idea won't work! LOL!!

Keep the pics coming 8)

REALLY ENJOYING THIS POST!
I LOVE PROGRESS!
-
Thanks Cedric. It is so rewarding to have an idea and take that to someone and watch it come to life. I can def see how this could become addicting... LOL
-
I'm Liking it!

We finished the ALPHA 40 build..... I couldn't be happier. The gun looks even better than I imagined!!!!! I painted the master stock for now but when I get home the stock will be sent off to be made. I will have all the parts re-cerakoted and will install a different butpad. Those things need to be done before the gun is 100% complete so it will be a few weeks before I start testing.

Very nice 8) 8)
I like how you did the magazine,
How much does the whole kit weigh?
Joseph
-
Not sure what the gun will weigh when all is said and done... The master stock was created by adding bondo and wood to achieve the desired look and feel. The real wood stock will be much lighter than the master..... so I can't get an accurate weight right now
-
Nice job, Mike.... makes a great rifle even better....
Bob
-
Looking real good and i like the way you kept everyone updated. Its a labor of love and not everything goes as fast as many people would like for it to go when you have custom work done. YOUR GUN WAS DONE QUICK IMO!
So in saying that, i patiently wait to see the end result once the final stock is done and to then see how she shoots and groups. Just from the pics above, it looks accurate and powerful.......
YOU GOT ANY HELIUM!!!!? LOL!
-
That is a nice looking gun.!!!Not only that its a nice looking cannon!!!!Extremes are awesome guns and well built!Brent def. knows his Sh*%!!!
-
Very nice I love that stock design
-
That. Looks. AMAZING!!
-
very nice?? noooooo is a very very very very very very niceeeeeeeeeeee
This worked very well , as the stock fellow says , is very beautiful and well-crafted ,
Here in Spain we can do so much "legally" I still have the papers to the police , to remove the license to manufacture PCP rifles ,
in my country all rifles including airsoft guns , must carry serial number, and also any PCP or spring, with more than 24.2 Juls power , it is considered a firearm , so we must take the gun license to legally use a rifle over 24.2 juls ,
take this message to know if anyone knows of any manufacturer .... barrels to send to Spain , barrels for compressed air ....
I need something in .250 caliber of a 25 " or more and with proven accuracy ,
Greetings to all and thank you, and sorry for my English ....
Pau
-
Looking very nice.
-
I think you have had a good week.
Very few people have a opportunity to go hang out with a custom gun builder.
Then go on a hog hunt.
Then be there when they are testing helium in two of their guns.
Good luck with the ALPHA 40 now go sling some lead.
-
Just got back to Virginia..... I am glad to be home. Thank you guys for all the comments. You are right.... I am very fortunate that Brent invited me to his shop and on the hunt. He is a stand up guy and he and his family were a blessing to be around. I got to spend a little time with Alan Avram also.. He is awesome! And Bob Vogel is one cool dude! We had alot of fun. I am so pleased with the work Brent did. He is a MASTER MACHINIST! Gotta go look at my gun... I can't stop looking at it!!!! LOL!!!!
-
Here is a before and after pic of the original 40 cal...
-
Wow! looks like a completely different gun(which it is in a way ;))
Nice work 8)
-
one more.
Manually operated magazine that indexes with magnets?
-
rkr- sorry, I said that wrong.... The magazine is manually opperated by pushing it over with your finger... the magnets STOP the mag perfectly at each point for the bullets to line up with the bolt/bore... It still blows my mind how perfectly everything is aligned when the magnets reconnect to each other. The magnets are rare earth magnets from K&J magnets. N42 and N52 strength.
-
Very Cool. Always been a fan of the stick magazine for its simplicity and robustness. Magnets to tend to pickup iron particles in the field; oh and keep them away from your compass :)
Tom
-
Here is a before and after pic of the original 40 cal...
WOW!! The gun looks great, quite a change for sure. Great idea, never would have thought to use magnets..I agree they might become problematic to picking up unwanted debris...still,bravo 8) Nice shirt BTW ;D
-
Since the magnets are incased in the magazine retainer and always in contact with the other magnets in the magazine, I don't forsee an issue with them wanting to pick up anything unwanted..... If they do it would be on a molecular level which is too tiny to interfer with anything.... Unless I get to rollin round in the dirt with the gun...... and it is way to pretty for that!!!! LOL!!! Thanks for the shirt compliment.... It is one of my favorite T's....quite the conversation piece
-
Picked up the first duplicated ALPHA stock yesterday.... I have a good day of sanding and detailing to do. This stock will either be stenciled and painted or dipped in the Kryptek pattern.
-
Your duplicated stock looks great Mike...Allen
-
How do I get one?
-
Thanks Allen. It turned out really good.
C. ALLS, You can pm me and we can discuss the stock if you would like.
-
Finally had my artwork approved and breech engraved. I think it turned out nice. Next.., it's off to be cerakoted!
-
Very nice! And Yeah! No laser marked instruction booklet :)
-
Thanks Tom. "And Yeah! No laser marked instruction booklet :)" LOL!!
-
The ALPHA stock is finally finished.. I chose to finish it in KRYPTEK HIGHLANDER. The finishing was done by my friend Dustin Fauver who owns Virginia Hydro Designs.
-
More pics..............
-
I have no idea how that camo is applied, but it's GORGEOUS !!!
Bob
-
Thanks Bob. Dustin did an amazing job! It is hydrographics, "water transfer", "camo dip" many different names... Dustin uses sealer to seal the wood,an epoxy primer next ,then the base coat, then dip, then matte clear coat. I think that's the steps.. ???
-
Every time I see that stock I get a tingling feeling in all the right places lol....
-
My GOODNESS sir! That stocks is PRETTY! Yeah, i couldn't come up with a more manly word.......lol!
-
8) Nicely done
-
Looking very good! Waiting to see results how it shoots when it is ready
-
That stock turned out great!
I have been talking about getting into small scale hydrgraphics for a while now. Maybe next time I have an influx of money. 8)
-
When I was in the planning stages of my barrel, part of the reason I went with an 1/8" wall thickness sleeve is that I wanted something different..... I planned on having it fluted purely for aesthetic reasons... So.....I am in the finishing stages of the small details of this build and decided to go for it! Here it is!
-
Looks pretty, but the very outer layer of the tube (be it carbon or steel) does the most of the work in stiffening the barrel.... so you will have lost a bit of stiffness....
Bob
-
I read something about that..... I didn't put any flutes on the bottom and only did 0* and 90* 1/16" deep leaving me 1/16" sleeve in the bottom of the flute... but I know I compromised the integrity some... It was a risk I was willing to take based on the fact that Brent's barrels shoot darn good without any sleeve at all.. I do have another sleeve on hand so I guess if I don't like it I will just pull that barrel off and put another on.. :-\
-
Aaaaaaalright Mike,
enough pretty pics of that gun man.............
GO SHOOT THAT GUN AND GIVE US SOME VIDEO AND PICS AND STUFFASES of it in action.......lol!
-
Ya, I need to see that beauty put holes in things.
-
Its coming........ I am so detail oriented that I drive myself crazy sometimes!!!! :o I have one more detail I'm working on .. a bolt knob made to resemble the 200gn BBT and that's it .. I promise!!!! ::) Then cerakote.. Then SHOOT!!!!!
-
Love the fluting on that barrel sleeve, it looks awesome!
That is quite a rifle you have there Mike. I would be afraid to take it in the field! 8)
-
Cool I like it.
-
It looks a bit too good, scratches and dents are bound to happen. Very very nice!
-
I'm a sucker for a nice fluting job :) I doubt there will be much functionality loss and it sure looks good :) Nice work!
-
Rizen,
I might have to pay you a visit. I'm just a couple hours away from you in Richmond. By they way, Great build.

We need to organize a meet and greet (and shoot!)for that area. I'm also just a few hours from that part of VA. Be nice to get a bunch of like minded airgunners together.
-
Here is my Bob's Boattail Bolt Knob, and a pic of the bullet that it was made to resemble.
-
Beautiful work Bob! Your gun is one a kind Mike, hard to take the smile off my face very proud of what you have accomplished...Allen
-
Thanks for the compliment Allen. Actually, My gunsmith made the knob based on Bob's bullet design.
-
Thats just toooooo cool Mike. Wow again! Looking darn good
-
Thanks Cedric... Won't be long now( 2-3 weeks) and I will have some performance posts for ya!
-
Very KEWL !!!
Bob
-
Mike, beautiful work on the gun.I have been watching the build unfold and cant wait to see you get out and shoot it.I love everything about it,very TOUGH looking too. That bolt knob just may be copyright infringement though.haha ;D
-
Pretty hard to infringe a Copyright on something that is freely given into the public domain to further the sport.... *grin*....
Bob
-
Brother that is nice. That small detail is a great tribute to Bob no doubt.
One question though: does the term, "ate up with it", sound familiar? ;)
Seriously very nice rifle man.
Bill
-
LOL! Yeah Bill, I have been known to "OVERDO" things from time to time.... ::) Just the way I'm wired, I guess.. :o
-
I finally got all my parts back from being cerakoted, the engraving colorfilled, and the ALPHA 40 fitted and mocked up before the final assembly..
I attached my barrel to the breech tonight and will let that dry until tomorrow.
I will post more pics tomorrow after the gun is together.
-
Beautiful Mike
-
;D 8) Wow that is an amazing looking rifle
-
Mike, you and Brent have done some amazing work on that gun, but I have been sitting on the edge of my chair for weeks waiting for performance reports. Sounds like they are coming very soon. Shot my Extreme 408 yesterday and totally love it. All the punch and accuracy a guy would ever want. I totally love your Bob Stern custom bolt. Gotta get me 1 of those.
-
Looking darn stout. I like what i see.
Eagerly awaiting some shooting..............................video or pics.........I'm waitin............... ;D
-
ALPHA 40 IS DONE!!!!!! ;D It has been quite a journey. I couldn't be more satisfied with the results! I will post some shooting results as soon as I get a chance. May be a week or so..
-
Flat out GORGEOUS, Mike !!!
Bob
-
That rifle is looking very good! I hope it shoots also good. Waiting for test results ;)
-
That is one awesome looking rifle there Mike, been watching your build and it's been a awesome trip there Brother.
-
I had a little free time this afternoon and got to shoot for an hour or so.... Here are a few test groups from the 186gn BBT hp.... The gun was refilled between each shot.... I just wanted to see what type of groups to expect.. I will get into tuning for 3 shots when I have more time...
The results look promising....
-
Looks like a really promising start! 8)
Bet she is a real tack driver once tuned. Have you polished the bore yet? It made a HUGE difference in my TJ .257 barrel. ;)
Knife
-
Lookin' good, Mike !!! .... those BBTs are definitely capable, as you know....
Bob
-
The rifle looks great, and seems to group ok on 50yds. Waiting to see how it does further out. Nice job on the gun!
Marko
-
That's a heck of a start Mike. That is where a lot of people get all happy and tingly on the inside. Based on what you have displayed thus far, you aren't likely satisfied. For a hunter, it will work on anything with a 5" KZ and allow some fudge factor. What kind of FPS/FPE are you developing with that boolit?
Bill
-
Bill, with the 177 gn BBT Chris was getting around 1000 fps on a 4500 psi fill with century spring #72056. (With Brent's heavy spring that number would obviously go up.) That is around 390 fpe with that bullet. The 186 gn BBT would be a little higher but similar... I am pretty sure I can get to 1250 fps on helium with the 186, and that would put me at 645 fpe.... Not bad for a 40 cal.... 8)

Almost double the energy delivered by a .45 ACP or 9mm handgun, using helium and right on using air ...... Nice!
-
Actually on helium with a full power spring I was sending the 177 grain bullets out the barrel at 1426fps.......
-
HOLY $#!%!!!
-
HOLY $#!%!!!
Yep, helium in airguns is the MIRACLE gas..................
Too bad its gotten so expensive here in Cali and hard to get
-
Yea it's the real deal. I was just trying to find a spring for the .308 Whiteout on helium. I turned her way down and I'm still sending the 200 grain BBT out the barrel at 1047 fps on a 4100 psi fill.
-
Hello, I get nothing on vacation and I find this ....
only say ... that if before it was finished 100% and the project seemed to me beautiful , work ... right now there is no word to describe it. AWESOME is about equal to the word I'm looking for ...
another thing...
because it would have in Spain ? in .250 caliber ?
hahaha
this is irrelevant , but I'm looking to buy the famous TJ guns in .250 caliber.
for Bob Boattails for my pcp if someone could help would be perfect .
Rizen 1
so hopefully still companies that manufacture PCP rifles had half the ideas out there in this forum.
Greetings to all
Pau
-
Greetings Pau, I am not sure about the Tj liners in .25 cal... maybe someone will chime in with an answer for you.... Thank you for your kind remarks..

Chris,
Nothing wrong with 1050 in that bullet design.....lol! That's is for sure 300 B.O. power. On the money!!
Cant wait to see how that slug performs in that gun in that set up
