Title: Just Another Ground Squirrel Story....
Post by: Bwalton on May 02, 2015, 12:27:00 PM
My Man Drig drove all the way in from San Diego...Like a 8-10hr round trip. I advised him to arrive the night before, which he did. We met up at around 5:20 in the AM and got on the road. Once we arrived at the property we let the land owner know of our arrival. Drig brought a host of fire power :o We can now be called the A-Team ;D Dale had 3 Daystates, 2 Air Rangers .25 and 1 Regal .22, and a Kalibrgun Colibri .22... Needless to say he only used one, but he was well prepared. The morning started off fast, they were in full swing, We sat down about 200yards apart, and could no doubt hear one another TWACKING  in the distance. There was a host of wild life out this day. while shooting for GS the gophers were in rare form also...well I had to put them on the to do list so to say,... Our friend the weasel was out hunting , we even saw a Eagle do a fly thru pick up on one of the casualties left behind. Also saw a yote do a gs pick up as the crows chased him away.
I had a lot of fun with Dale..the wind was blowing hard at times I would say up to 20mph gust and a steady 5-10. Because of the practice I know my windage, But some times it would gust right when you decide to shoot. Over all we did very well, I did not stop to count or take pictures, I just wanted to relax and let pellets fly ;)
There had to be every kid on the block out today! So many adolescence ground squirrels out...I know for a fact over a 100 adolescence playing around, well we had to trim those number also. Next week Im going to take a trip down south, I do not think that Dale liked that drive too much.  The only thing about this place is, to get a shot under 50yards is a rare treat :o most of the shots ranged from 50yards to 120yards, but mostly in the 70-90yard range.

I must say that this experience with Baxter was very humbling for me and I'll
remember it for a long time to come , for me this outing was very different
because I'm not used to shooting much over 70 yards and like Baxter stated
there were not many shots under 50 yards so I'll try to practice more at longer
ranges and continue to improve .

Thanks for the adventure Baxter the high mountain meadow was a excellent place
to go to and I'm looking forward to visiting there again someday " I hope " .

Nice shots and good video Baxter. It looks like there will be allot of GS videos during the summer posted ;) Around here they become the number one target while they are above ground. The only problem here is that the GS go under ground early. usually by August most GS are underground so I have to hit them hard while I can.

Great video and good shooting too. You hardly even have to move the camera/gun to get another in sight.

I dont like too long of a range, but 60yards and in is just way too ez...75 and out becomes a all holds bard type of deal because everything comes into play from that point. I know that I can make  the shot out to 120yards because now thats where I practice at, from 100-110, and 120. practice at those ranges gets you real confident.

I agree 60 yds with an accurate rifle is easy unless the wind is really blowing.
