I recently purchased a new HW98, and to my surprise, they no longer have the polished adjustable recoil pad assembly. The new assembly that comes on the HW98 is all black, and polymer. It works perfectly and is very adjustable. However, it is thinner overall, making the length of pull shorter. This didn't bother me from a trigger pull perspective, but I did notice it while setting my scope up. The scope is only able to go so far front in order to clear the break barrel. Your also limited in how far front the front ring can go due to the length of the dove tails. I got it just about perfect, but I still had to shift my head back a little bit to get the eye relief. Not a huge deal but after a hundred shots or so, my neck was sore. I measured everything out in comparison to my TX200 and found that I needed 1/2" more on the recoil pad. I installed a 1/2" thick polished aluminum shim on the back of the stock and it is now perfect ;D The shim has two counter sunk holes which I used to mount the plate using the original shorter mounting screws. Then I have two outer holes drilled through in the same location as the original mounting screws. I got a slightly longer set of screws to mount the stock recoil pad assembly over top of the shim. Very solid and it looks like it came with the rifle. It fits so much better now, more relaxing and tension free on the shot without having to shift my head back. Dimensions match the TX200, super comfortable 8)

That looks really good. Your rifle looks great.

Nice gun Steve! I have a great shimmed out Trail NP I can trade for your gun. Let me know 😂

Man, that looks killer. The polished aluminum with the black pad assembly matches everything perfectly. Awesome work, Steve. Your 98 is a real looker.

Lol😂 Well it sounds like your getting that NPXL ready to go now! How many shots did you put through it today?

What you did looks awesome. Strange thing is I know one guy who got a new 98 from AoA a few months ago with the adjustable but pad as you describe. I know another guy that got one from AoA a few weeks later and his is the aluminum one like my older R11. I know a guy who got a 98 about 3-4 weeks ago from AoA but have not seen it yet. I wonder which butt pad it has. Seems HW may be shipping out what they want.

I know you have not had your HW98 or your TX200 for very long. I also own both rifles. I am curious if you have picked a favorite yet?

Brazos,
After I got mine I contacted Weihrauch and asked them about it. According to Weihrauch they switched to the new style a few months ago. I'm guessing there is some older stock out there and some folks have been fortunate to still get the old style. I asked them if I could still purchase an older polished adjustable recoil pad and the answer was no :-\

Not yet. The 98 has been incredibly accurate, and getting better. But then again so is the TX. Up until today the TX has fit me better out of the box and allowed me to shoot in a more relaxed position. This is no longer an issue now that I added the Rowan straight setback trigger and 1/2" spacer. Both rifles fit equally as well now, so I'll be able to put them through the paces and get a better comparison.

Nice work! I did something similar but actually shortened the LOP. I didn't have an adjustable pad and I needed the rifle to come up and into my body so I used a piece of aluminum to make a spacer to mount to the butt of the stock and then mount the pad to in the position that I desired. Not as pretty as your but it was cheap, easy and works great!

Since then, I just decided to make a custom stock for the action so now it fits just right! :)

Beautiful looking rifle Steve .... if you can shoot it just half as good as it looks .... you'll have a winner. My TX heard me talking to my son-in-law about maybe getting a 98 ... wouldn't shoot tight for 2 days, stringing my groups .... she was %$#^%%$. ;D I explained to her that I have her, what do I need with another springer ..... she is better now, grouping nicely. She may see a PCP join the family in a year or so .... sshhhh .... she has no idea. ;D

Excellent work Steve!!!
And Allan.....I told her!!

Nice work. Would love to hear your feedback and comparison with the TX. This is on my short list with the HW97/TX/LGU at the moment.

Thank you Joe, now I'm sure to score about 170/200 on the next 30 yard target match. :'(

Similar to something I made for a cut down Remington. I also used aluminum bar stock for a little R1 bling

She is MAAAAAAD at you!!!

Love what you did with that R1 Tim!!

Hey John!! Not too sure this will help much, but I have a 97, 98, Pro Sport and TX. All in 177 and all tuned with Vortek kits.
I honestly could not choose one over the other!! After hearing what a few members had to say about their LGUs.....it just makes the decision even harder!
The 98 is my only break barrel and she is just as accurate as any fixed barrel.
If you have any specific questions, post them and we'll try to help you spend lots of your cash!!!

Thanks Allan ;) Yeah I bet the TX didnt like that too much. My TX and the 98 get along just fine. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite ;DExcellent work Steve!!!
Thanks Joe! I really think it's finished now. It fits me like a glove and MAN is it shooting AWESOME!! I'm on vacation next week and plan on putting a lot of lead through both of my rifles. I ran a chrony test on the AA Diabolo Field 8.4 (4.51's), and on paper and target at close range theyre even more consistent than the AA 4.52's. Gonna try them at distance and if they do well, I'll be shooting them in our next 30yd bench rest competition ;)

Thanks Brett!! Nice work on your rifle too!!

Thanks John :D. The HW98 is an awesome rifle, but so is the TX. It's gonna be so hard to put one over the other. About the only category where the TX stands above is the smooth shot. Pellet on turret before shot, and its still there after the shot. Its an ultra smooth shot cycle ;) It's the Cadillac of the two.

Nice added bling to the HW98 and it matches the rest you put on before, perfectly! ;D I'm sure I speak for us all when I say we look forward to next week's results of all that has gone into the rifle. ;D

Very nice job Steve. I didn't realize they changed the 98.
