Post by: wayne nicol on April 14, 2015, 12:55:33 PM
what advice for a reasonably priced side focus type of scope for my daughter.
are there any dealers or stores out there that might sell used/ demo scopes.
i would love to get a sidewinder, its just out of my price range in the new market  :|
thanks

Wayne,
Having shot Hunter Field Target for two years now, I have some advice for you.
The Hawke Varmint line of scopes.
3-12X can be had for $189.00.
They have a 1/2 mil-dot reticle.
You can shoot FT with a mil-dot reticle but 1/2 mil-dot is more accurate.
They are not too heavy and they have a side focus wheel.

thanks mate- i did look at them too- so just one question, with the side focus, not having the side wheel on them( not looking for cool factor here- just practical- i had one shop guy tell me" buy this scope it looks really cool with the big wheel on it ::)) how does that effect the distance gradations etc- i would imagine with the bigger radius wheel, that there would be scope for finer gradations.
and if so, where can one get an after market wheel.

what rifle do you shoot with.
many thanks

yup sorry Frank, just re read your post- i see you shoot hunter class- so the ranging is not an issue for you- my daughter is really keen on the "open" type classes.
this is all new to us though ;D
cheers
thanks

"Ranging" is an issue with Hunter Class. We can focus to judge the range.
Wayne, the marks on the scope, either on the front lens or the sde-focusing don't mean squat.
Tape the wheel and measure the distances yourself.
Verify with a good range finder.
I will show you a picture of my 1720T pistol set up for Pistol Hunter Class. Hopefully you can see the marks I put on the wheel. The Varmint doesn't come with a wheel. You can make your own or order one from Eric at "Compufoil.com":

In Hunter Class we cannot adjust the windage or elevation knobs to correct for distance or wind. We are restricted to 12X or less (we can zoom below 12X but not above) and we can adjust the focusing knob only to gauge the distance. In open class, you can "click", i.e., adjust your elevation knob so you may aim directly and not use mil-dots or point of aim for the various distances.
Hunter class is more challenging, IMHO. ;)
