Title: The forgotten under lever child of HW
Post by: sactargetshooter on March 21, 2015, 05:16:54 AM
Yes, I am talking about the HW57. This is a new-to-me but slightly used one, just arrived today. It oozes quality despite being the "econo" line of HW guns. Despite being quite light, it shoots JSB Express at about 800 FPS, which is about the same as my pretty-new-to-me RWS 34.

The iron sight on the HW57 is literally an iron sight, as opposed to mostly plastic. It is a joy to plink a little indoor just using the iron sight!

I'll probably scope it with a Bushnell Banner scope. I just cannot decide which German girlfriend to bring to the Ione FT match on Sunday. I am leaning on the RWS 34 because the scope is already sighted in. Both guns will, no doubt, out shoot me.

Getting back to the HW57... The loading port is the unique feature of this gun. From pictures, it is difficult to tell the tight tolerance of how the loading port fits into the breech. Let's just say that air leaking is not an issue! The loading port itself is all metallic although it looks like a plastic piece in pictures. I have no issues loading pellets into the loading port at all.

The shot cycle is very short with no twang. I have never shot a gas ram, but I would imagine this gun shoots more like a gas ram than a typical springer.

The trigger is the best feature of this gun. In terms of the second stage, both the RWS 34 (T06) and the HW57 are crisp and well defined. However, the transition from first stage to second stage is very different. The RWS 34 is a little vague, whereas the HW57 is very well defined. I was able to adjust the trigger of the RWS 34 to remove the second stage creep. The HW57 did not need any adjustments.

For the price of two new Stoeger X20S, I think the used HW57 is a real bargain.

Congratulations.  The HW57 is a good 12 fpe rifle with all the Weihrauch quality.  The trigger is, as you say, very nice; it's a Rekord.

Congrats!  How does the weight of the 57 compare with the 77/97 series at 8.8 lbs?  I have never seen the 57 that I recall.   Enjoy your new shooter!

The HW57 is 3.2kg or 7 lbs. Even with a lighter scope (like a Bushnell Banner 4-12x40), it'll be 8 lbs.

As far as I know, it is not imported into the US.

That's a tease as to where or how you picked it up.  Did you buy it in Canada? the UK?

Tak,
PLEASE bring the 57 out so we may fondle it with loving hands, never seen one and would like that chance.

They are great guns. Pretty much stopped shooting my 50S when I got mine as it was easier to cock.
I don't know about the "eccono" bit. Mine was only about $60-$70 less than I paid for my 77. We all know speed sells over here so this is probably why they aren't imported in quantity. Most people would pay the difference and get the 77/97 not knowing what a sweet little gun the 57 is. I do find with sausage fingers, loading .177 to be a bit of a pain but worth it.

I bought mine from a fellow GTA member  ;).

A few quick snapshots are here (https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-20nisII98-fmloWml3UDcyM3lqQ3ZRYkZyZ3N2WjVFUE5zcFoyV0U1LS1uTFpGUWpfRUE&usp=sharing). It is grainy because the Casio has an image sensor that is inferior to that of my phone, but the macro focusing ability is nice. I'll "borrow" my wife's DSLR next time  :P.

Will do. Since I will be shooting the RWS 34 in the match, I'll leave the HW57 scopeless so you guys can plink with its open sight. There is an unexplainable joy in plinking away with a quality mild springer with an open sight.

Oh, no, I think I am being pulled away from the dark side.

I've had my eye on this model for about 1.5 years, but it seems the HW57 just hasn't been reliably imported to the US.  Its one of the few Weihrauchs I haven't tried yet, and I'd love a chance to try yours out.  I can't make it to the FT shoot tomorrow, but hopefully in the near future I'll be able to attend and give it a try.  Make sure to bring it to every FT match you attend so we can get our grubby paws on that poor little HW57!  ;D Good luck at the match tomorrow!

I really like the proportions, from those photos. Those of you that are able to handle/shoot, please let us non-attendees know how it balances and points. If the 54 speaks to me, I might need to get a more carry-friendly rifle, too...

In terms of shouldering, this is by far the easiest one of all the rifles that I have, with the exception of an AA S200 and my current 1377 converted to carbine. The iron sight is fantastic for plinking and short range shooting. I'll be sure to bring it tomorrow.

I think there are two reasons the HW57 is not imported. First is the loading port. After some complaints about the loading port bending pellet skirts, some people may feel it is a flawed design. Second is the power level. HW already has more powerful under lever guns. Importers may not be moving the less powerful HW57.

PA used to carry the HW57. Maybe this has to do with who is importer of HW guns, too.
