I managed to save up enough money after all my mechanical and physical financial disasters to get this rifle. I looked really hard at all the others in 9mm/.357. I just could not pass it up with the price of $523 shipped from Field Supply. It arrived safely today with no damage to the outer box. UPS was the carrier. I will keep everyone updated to the rifle's progress through it's break in period.

Guessing you're probably out shooting . Patiently awaiting a review from a non rep .

Just unboxed her and she was well packed. Hatsan had shipped this rifle in egg crate foam, so there was no way this gun was going shift around in it's box. It came with everything stated in the advertisement. The sling is very nice. It came with spare O-rings for the magazine and probe, allen wrenches to adjust the trigger, and few other accessories for adjustments for this rifle. The rifle is precharged with air. The instruction manual is only for the .177, .22, .25. It does not list the .30 or .35 in it so for those who have never owned a BT65 or a PCP might be out in the dark for the specifications and may have to refer back to Hatsan's website or customer service to answer any questions that may arise. Basically Hatsan has not updated their owner's manual for the newer caliber models. But the operation and care is the same for all BT65 models.
I have to wait on ammo and adapter fitting for the probe, so being able to shoot it is on hold for a day or two. I took my marauder and carnivore and placed them side by side to give you an idea of how much bigger the carnivore compared to the marauder.
Just like my marauder this will stay stock, no tuning or mods, just a simple shooter. I am one of those who believes in "if ain't broke, don't fix it". I will keep everybody updated as to how this rifle performs, it will be honest and straight forward. I already like the gun, it shoulders nicely, it feels good in my hands. I do have a chrony, trigger tester, and sound tester so I will be able to share that with everybody.

Congrats on the new gun! I also looked hard at that gun. Looking forward to your reports.

Hi folks. I did a little measuring for a hard gun case to store this rifle in. It will need to be at least 52" long and 16" wide in order to accommodate the rifle with a scope. The double storage gun cases came the closest with out breaking the bank. I will be mounting a Center Point 4x16 42mm mildot AO scope on it. They have been good scopes for me and are reasonably priced. So for now I will get her cleaned up and lubricated and get the rest of the air fill parts and hopefully by next week I can get serious with it. Have a great day! :D

Glad to hear it arrived and well packaged! Look forward to your reports! I too could not pass up the deal, my .30 arrives today, ammo tomorrow.

Hi folks, Still waiting on some things for the carnivore. I ordered some JSBs this week and they arrived today. They look like pellets on steroids. I thought I have a little fun with them, each pellet in the picture is same style of JSB just different calibers. Left to right is the .177, .22, .25, and .35. I though it would neat to do a size comparison of each pellet. I have Eun Jins ordered and should be here next week. Ya'll have a great, safe weekend.

Thanks guys, I am about to go nuts waiting on this stuff. I still have all my other guns to keep me busy if the weather would just cooperate a little. I have to work this weekend so that doesn't help either.
-
I have a BT65 .30cal coming in on Monday to tune for someone, I will also post my results after the tune.

Thanks Baxter. It will be interesting to see how much difference there will be with the .30. For now I am just shooting it out of the box to see how it performs during the break in and go from there.

Awesome. Just got a .22 myself. What are you planning on hunting with that cannon. Keep us updated.

Mostly pig and coyote but Alabama has opened up deer to air guns so I will not pass up that opportunity if I get the chance.

Deer with an aigrun with less power than a .22LR?.... I would seriously reconsider that....

Good evening folks, just a little up date, still waiting on the fill adapter. Hopefully that will be here by the weekend. The Eun Jin pellets came today so I have 2 different styles and weights to work with. I have mounted a Centerpoint 3x9 40mm AO duplex. I had a few scopes laying around and couldn't see going out to get another one when I could give this one a new home, plus save a few dollars as well. Did manage to cycle a round through it to make sure everything worked right, it all went smooth as to be expected with it being a new gun. Pulling the bolt was a little stiff but no more than when my Marauder was the first time I shot it. The trigger is smooth and predictable, no travel at all. This rifle is very quiet, the pellet hitting the plywood was louder than the gun. So with that being said, I think I have another keeper PCP to keep the Marauder company.
Just for fun I photoed the Eun Jins side by side with the JSB pellet. Left to right .22 EJ domed, .25 EJ domed, 9mm EJ domed and the .35 JSB.

When I got the tin of JSBs, i'm like wow is this for real, it's huge. The eun jins came in the same size tin that all their other pellets are sold in. JSBs are 100ct and the eun jins are 46ct. I just ordered the H&N Grizzly pellets today so they should be here by Monday. I will test these to see how they do and then bump up the custom slugs that are available.
Just for comparison between the .25 and the .35.

Good evening folks, the fill adapter has arrived. The fill probe worked correctly with no leaking. I sighted the rifle in at 20yds. Well I had a little scope orientation issue, I mounted it with the windage turret verticle instead of horizontal. So the first three shots were off the paper. Sorry for the blonde moment, it happens to the best of us. Got every thing lined back up and after six more shots it was game on. Shot three into the lower right and 6 into the upper right. Patched up the center and shot 12 more times. Being a new barrel, I knew they were going to spread a little. Here are the numbers for 1 fill and 12 shots, I used the JSB 81gr, started at 190 bar and stopped at about 130 bar. The trigger pull averages 3.25lbs. Noise level for the rifle is 115dB at it's max. Didn't have any issues with the bolt. Everything cycled like it was suppose to. I used the Caldwell deadshot rest since that will be my go to rest when hunting on the ground. Yes I have a monster grin from ear to ear, I am very please with this rifle. :D

Good to hear, I think that there is sure room for improvement. Those numbers can step up a bit. I think that it should get into the high 700. For the most part. Keep us posted , like to see the 50 yard grouping.
-
At those velocities, penetration will be a real issue.... It will be the equivalent of a 40 gr. pellet in .25 cal at the same velocity....
Bob
-
Ia agree with Bob, you need that gun in the mid 800, it can get there but for sure would have to be cut on.
-
It would be interesting to know the dimensions of the transfer port inside that beast.
-
Glad to know you're pleased with your new rifle.
Going by the velocities you've posted that gun has a lot of room for improvement before it'll be up to snuff as a rig for hunting medium-larger sized game.
I'm in complete agreement with Bob & Baxter on this one. At the very least I'd say it should get those JSB's moving anywhere in the range of 840-880- before being used on larger sized game. As is you're getting roughly 88 fpe, & for a .35 thats really low & slow. So range will be limited, as well as energy & penetration at POI may not be sufficient at those velocities, depending on what's getting hit with those pellets.
Again imo since the BT already has a long barrel the best way to increase the velocity should be to match up the valve outlets-tp-barrel inlet size, & if that doesn't get you there possibly lean on the hammer spring a little.

Good evening folks, this is just a little update with carnivore. Manage to get some time with it tonight, been working on a small issue with magazine. The double, inner o rings was the problem. I had noticed that the groups where a little wide at 20 yds., I had three shots that where spot on and then the other three would act like fliers. This was happening with the JSB 81gr. When I went to 50yds it was even more noticeable and the groups where about 2". It has taken sometime to figure this one out. The skirt on the pellet would hang just enough to cause it to angle down and not staying centered as it entered the chamber and would not seat right. It would be a little off center in the chamber. I also had noticed that some pellets would chamber easily and others were kind of tight going in. The o rings inside the magazine were not evenly spaced inside. I took out the one closest to the breech, that help a little but caused another problem with them not staying in the magazine. So it was back to the drawing board again.
Well after a few weeks of trial and error, I have found a solution that might work for me in the long run. I needed something that would stay but not damage the magazine or the pellet going in . I had cut up a pixy stick straw and straddled it on to the spacer. Used a heat gun to heat it up to mold against the walls. Then trimmed it up so it would not catch on anything. Call it crazy but it worked. The pellets stayed straight and same pressure all the way through the chambering process. The bolt locked down with very little effort. Here are the results, I only did two shot strings, 6 rounds each. The lower left group was the first round, the center was the second round. The first group I used the pellets that were a little beat up from all the testing and they stayed together, second was fresh, unused pellets and the group was a little tighter. So when I get the chance I will stretch it out to 50 yds. The rifle is still factory, no mods.

I had read about some issues on other models and their magazines as well. I had been shooting with just one mag, then decided to save some time/steps and fill the second one as well. Didnt group as wellnot in far enough and there are inconsistencies, too far and there are in consistencies, plus they would protrude and slide towards breech. I figured it was that double o-ring. Nice work on that! Keep at it!
-
Got mine (.357) thursday from Field Supply tryed it out friday, disaster. The mag allows 3 shots before it jams up. Couldn't try the other mag because it had a burr in the I.D. would allow the mag lock shaft to fully index. The few shots i did get off were fairly impressive a 30 yards. JSBs fully compress almost flat when hitting heavy gauge steel targets. I think the mag design is to light for the ammo, gets lobsided and won't index properly. Other makes that use similiar mag design have front and rear plates to help keep pellets in help with alignment. After ruining over 1/2 dozen pellets pushing them out with a 1/4 " doll rod i gave up. Its getting returned as soon as they email the prepaid packing slip. Mag design on rifle is not safe. I guess you get what you pay for.... :'(

I imagine that the magazine design is going to be the down fall for the .30 and .357. They need to make it where the pellet stays straight all the way through the magazine. A single shot tray would have been a nice option for it. Even designing a magazine like the marauder would be even better than what they have offered. They say it will not double load, it will do it if you don't get the bolt all the way back. Luckily I have caught that several times already.
Sorry to hear about your frustration with it and I don't blame you for sending it back. We have to keep in mind that is the first time these rifles have been put on the market and they are going to have some production issues with them. This shouldn't be happening but it has and hopefully Hatsan will make it right in a timely manner. Other than that, this rifle is a very accurate shooter. I plan on keeping it and just work out the bugs that come along with it and will continue to share my results with everyone here.
-
On all Hatsan magazines it is a good idea to knock off the sharp corners with abrasives. Including the slots the o-rings sit in. On that .357 mag it looks like it would be easy to dent the outer rim, pretty skinny. I use cravex bits in a dremel or wooden dowels split on the end to put fine sand paper in and ran with a drill. Regards, Tom
-
I am sure if you voice your concerns to Hatsan they will address the issue...They need someone here that is always in touch with the consumer, not just Hatsan but all manufactures.
-
Mfr reps would be nice to have on the site. The .357 needs a more robust mag design, the fly weight pot-metal mag design is to prone to jamming. I shouldn't have to rework anything on a high production Brand New air rifle. Sure i can cope with the high effort cocking bolt had warning on that issue. Without a design change i'm not confident there will be a fool proof mag indexing fix.
There also the risk factor with unjamming a .357 air rifle..... :-\

I think that it all stems from going beyond the platform limits. I always thought that the .30 was the stock limits, meaning that in stock form the .30cal would do just fine, and it has, as for the .357 they should have went with a bottle instead of a tube for more power and redesigned he clip from another material. just my thoughts. just those two things would have taken it to the next level.

The magazines for the .357 definitely need to be reworked to handle the length of the pellet. There is just to much slack between the o rings to allow it to center in to the chamber. When you start to push the pellets in they tend to lean to one side or the other. That is why I use the straw inside the cylinder to take up that space. So now the pellets go in straight and stay that way all the way through to the chamber. After that the groups started tighten up. Another note, if the pellet slips to far forward and sticks out the front of the magazine it can jam the magazine while cycling to the next shot. It's kind of a balancing act with these larger pellets going in the magazine with the o rings in it.
From my observation, the power is there, it just needs a little coaxing. I will work on that as I go through the break in. Work and weather has me limited right now.

I'm going to jump in here, and say that my .30 is experiencing the same type of "3 shots, then jam" issue...( I have been completing the indexing cycle with my left fore finger).
I am in hopes that this issue is recognized, and rectified quickly...

You guys have to let Hatsan know about these things, so that something can be done, could have been a bad run of those clips, I did not have that problem at all...but do not wait for the next guy to email them..they are real good at listening and acting. I'm thinking QC and a bad run that was not caught.

Baxter are you using the single outside o ring magazine or the double inner o ring magazine on the .25 cal.
-
I'm using the double oring, one thing that you can try is a smaller diameter double o ring to fit the pellets tighter.

All ready tried that one. They still teetered to one side or the other. That might work for the .30 cal owners. A sleeve like insert would probably work better with the .357. This is what the straw looks like after I formed it to the magazine. Once I did that everything worked like it was suppose to and the groups tightened up.

If you had to do that, I would waste no time emailing Hatsan with that picture, has to be a QC problem, and I'm sure that they will replace it.

Hatsan emailed!
Long, detailed, and a warning, that this could be "trending"...at least with the recent crop of magazines....especially if you purchased from Field supply.

Ok guys,
Good news/bad news...
Good news is that Hatsan is sending 2 new magazines.
Bad news is that they could lend no insight as to what the issue may be.
They did encourage me tell anyone else that was having a magazine issue, to contact them right away.
DJ

That was blazing fast! Told you that they will take care of it. ;D
-
Maybe unrelated or identified if evaluated others such as stock, but be sure to check your all the screws in the action. When mine became loosened, it was the problem. Just trouble shooting.
-
The magazine is the only issue I have with the carnivore, everything else works fine.
-

Same with me, but it was some screws and just breaking in/becoming acquainted and learning nuances. Ive got well over 500 through the barrel now and other than tighten some screws and cleaning, which Ive done with every gun, it provides a great shooting experience being quite accurate with little effort.
-
I have about 300 rds. through it so far. The JSBs have been the best so far even with the magazine issue. Now that I have solved the magazine issue, I will got back to the other pellets and slugs that I have and see how they do. I can't complain about the accuracy, it's a tack driver, no make that a nail driver. After each shooting session I check everything to make sure something has not come loose. This rifle has been a delight to shoot and makes me happy, what more could I ask for. :D
-
I too want a good shooting experience and mine has also lived up to and exceeded expectations.
I hope e new trials with other ammo works for you! Ive got three different pnes to try out this weekend as well. Worst case, JSB shoots great, but Im sure more will enter the market.
P.S. You may feel the presence of a Nor'ester in your area :-) This time I will only be ther for about 18 hours :-)
