I have 3 (ea) 60 minute (87 cf) Scott tanks and the fill station charges me close to $12 a tank. Since I will be getting them filled for free now that's enough savings for 3-4 tins of pellets. ;D
-
That's good more shooting.
-
That's very nice of them to do it for you.

Fire dept. here won't fill mine at all. Still pumping.

It took me awhile to find one to do it for me. The county I live in refused, but the station near my office agreed to do it. I explained that my tanks were the same as the tanks they used and were up to standards to the Fire Protection Safety Association. Finally, a Deputy Chief actually listened and saw there was no harm in using their compressors.

That's great Norman. I find it amazing so many refuse and they think those compressors belong to them. Pretty sure they belong the to the people of the community.

I'm not entirely convinced the person I talked to even has the authority to grant or refuse to allow me to get them filled. I'm going to check with a couple of the smaller fire departments in the county and see if maybe they will help me out for a small donation. Hopefully a little persistence will pay off.

The larger departments always directed me to the deputy chief. Some of them said "no" before I could even finish asking and explaining.
-
That's pretty much the same reaction I got from the person who answered the phone. Not even sure if any of the smaller volunteer fire departments have their own compressors or not. That's why I checked with the largest city in the county first.

I think it has a lot to due with liability. In this sue happy society we live in, everyone is in CYA mode.

On a similar note, and I think you are absolutely correct, I debated an aluminum CO2 tank for a kegerator I was building but was told by the local gas fill outfit in my town ( Purity Cylinder Gasses ) they would not fill it. Said legally the tanks needed a certification after some sort of water pressure test and the cost of that would be added to my bottle and fill, and it was cheaper to just buy a certified bottle from them.
I would assume same thing with a CF tank but I has some peeps at fire suppression business I can call now instead.
Some day I'll go there.

I have Scott tanks which are the same as the fire departments and they meet NFPA standards just like the departments' tanks
