Title: B50 modders - Hillman spring source?
Post by: mobilemail on March 09, 2015, 05:43:01 PM
What is a good source for the #83 and #86 Hillman springs? I haven't done well sourcing them locally at Ace Hardware, Menard's or Home Depot.  Checked Lowes online with no success.

Same here. I've checked my local Ace, Tru Value & independent hardware stores plus Lowes & HD for those springs along with a #152.

I assume Mobilemail is also looking for a B50/51 but I'm wondering about springs for a FDPCP also. Is there a commonly replaced spring in those too?

I was able to find the #152 in an ace hardware in Hastings NE on a work trip, but I won't be back there for a while.

Hey Guys,
If you are really serious about changing out the OEM valve springs with the lighter Hillman conical spring #86 or the heavier #83 conical spring, PM me and I will go to my local McClenden's Hardware and pick up some #86's, #83's or #152's.
The springs are only $1.50 each and shipping is about $2.25 for (4) springs.

I think the #83's/#152 combination is best w/OEM hammer & spring guide, whereas the #86/#152 or MC springs are better for light weight, delrin hammers & spring guides.

Trying to help,
Kirk

I talked on the phone yesterday with one of the guys who is a few steps ahead of my on his B50 mods. I wasn't aware that the conical springs required machine work on both the poppet and the valve face.  As a non-lather, that's pretty much a deal breaker for me as far as a DIY project. I think I'm going to research a conventional compression spring with will fill the bill. Since a conical can't really be defined with a linear rate, it's probably going to require a little experimentation.

Kirk - thanks for your generous offer to help your brothers out, much appreciated!

I was able to find them at a tru-value hardware store for $0.60 and $0.90 (if I recall correctly). They were loose in a divided bin but, I have already sold my rifle so I didn't bother to make sure the springs I were looking at were the right size but, I did see the divider marked for them.
My local ACE hardware used to have hillman springs but switched over to some generic brand that didn't have near selection.

Hey Mark,
1) The conical springs require additional work to either decrease the dia. of the poppet end (hand drill/file would work) or open up the spring end a little.  Also, the valve cap end needs to be drilled to 1/2" (drill press/hand drill/vise).
A (lighter) straight spring that will fit over the OEM poppet will be too small and pass through the valve (nut) end, assuming it is increased to 3/8" for additional airflow.
2) Also, if you are going to the trouble of changing out the valve & main spring, you should increase the size of the valve/transfer/barrel ports to 9/64".  The OEM ports are set-up to choke the gun (restrict airflow) since the main spring, hammer and spring guide strike the valve stem so hard.

Joey, you sold your gun already???

Yeah...I ran across a deal on a used Daystate and had the extra jingle in pocket for it, so I couldn't pass it up. It's supposed to be delivered today and of course I found a deal on another one just like it today for $100 less than I paid (go figure). Still haven't got the money from the sale of the BAM yet so I still have the gun in my possession but, it's supposed to be coming snail mail.

Thanks, Kirk. Can I keep that offer "in pocket"? I want to try a couple of more local places first but I'm probably going to come up empty. I'm going to be working on my Gen 1.5 FDPCP first anyway, as an intro to PCP guns, so it'll be a few weeks before I need anything for the B-51 I'm fairly sure. That said, your offer is welcome and I thank you for it!
