Is the quality of the hw95 now as good as years past?

Better! Tuner Paul Watts made a statement sometime back "the good ole days are now" concerning the upgrades made in recent years on the HW95.

Here is a video from a great guy who un-boxes, disassembles, and compares the parts & upgrades to the previous versions. This should satisfy your question.

Keep in mind this is a European unit that has reduced power by law so the spring comes out easier. Do not do it with a US unit without a compressor.
