Title: What do I do
Post by: 62hotrod on February 27, 2015, 08:53:28 PM
I did a complete tune on my Air Hawk Elite 177 about two weeks ago. I did a complete trigger job, Vortek PG2 kit, Soft bedded the action, plus a few other things. I used a high grade high moly content grease for lube. Not having time to shoot much it has been a struggle to get maybe +- 200 rounds through it. I'm still getting just a small hint of smoke in the barrel after a shot. I'm getting decent accuracy, but I can't help to wonder what if. Should I continue trying to burn it out by shooting it, or tear it down and try cleaning out a little grease.

If after you shoot it you have a light brown haze in the bore just keep shooting it, if you can't see out the other end then tear it down and remove all but a light film of the lube, should be able to feel it but not really see it...

Thank You Mike, It's just leaving a haze in the barrel sometimes and sometimes it's kind of dark. I think I'll open it up and clean out some grease. It's to easy of a fix to keep wasting time trying to shoot it out. I'm getting a pretty good fps spread I hope that'll tighten it up some anyway.

sounds like just a hair to much lube, check piston seal also, even a small scratch can give goofy problems in some rifles...

I broke it down cleaned most of the grease from just the piston. When I reassembled it I put the piston in all the way in and put a little grease at the end of the skirt just enough to help the buttons. I shot it some Sunday first couple shots left a very light haze then it went completely smoke free. I had a couple dime sized groups at forty yards and one holers at twenty and thirty yards. If it'll just hold up for the long haul now. I chronographed it last night and got these numbers. i question the accuracy of the Chrono, I was using Chrono connect on my smart phone. I have no idea if these numbers are good bad or what, that's another learning phase I need to under take. Please give me your opinion. Thank You

;D Not an expert on the D34 or clones but those numbers don't look bad especially if you continue with that kind of accuracy , also the FPS may pick up a little as everything wears in and mates. Remember accuracy trumps power every time "a miss is as good as a mile" and close doesn't cut it if you are hunting  or trying for 1st place at a match
