Hatsan Carnivore .30cal......Just had a chat with a rep on P.A not helpful at all....Trying to do the research on the .30 Barrel, could not tell me if it was choked or not? Then said that a big bore should not shoot out over 50yards? He does not know that this game is changing. a .30 is not a .357 or .45 or .50cal although to me any cal that I buy I have to have range! P-dogs and GS needs distance, and sometimes a .22 or even a .25 have problems stopping in their tracks over 75yards So a larger kill zone is needed. a .30 shooting @ 950fps and a .357 shooting the same should be able to do the job well pass 100yards. correct me if im wrong in thinking?

It should the only thing I can think of is faster fps drop off due to a bigger bullet but that's more with a .45 .50 cal so 30 cal should be good past 100 yards . Im With you on the range thing. I shoot a lot of birds in the summer and once they catch on its hard getting with in 50 yards before there gone so a gun that can hold a good group out to 75 100 yards is a must gives you more time and IMO better reward when you hit your intended targets. Fifty yards to me is too easy I like a challenge!
-
I agree, at the same time the higher fps keeps a flatter trajectory.
-
Somebody can correct me if im wrong, but I don't think any of the barrels are choked on Hatsan PCPs.
Regardless I see no reason why the .30 cal carnivore wouldnt be hunting accurate, or even group at 100 yards, especially with a capable scope like a Hawke sidewinder (more on that in another post, I don't wanna get too off topic)

Yes wrong...they are choked barrels, the .30 Lother Walther barrel is not, to my understanding non, choked barrels do not shot pellets as well as choked barrels hence I will be shooting pellets. Tim used the TJ choked barrel in the competition shooting pellets.
-
classic example of justbecause they might sell it doesn't mean they know jack about it
lol @ should not shoot a .30 past 50 yards. what's next? 100 fpe minimum for dispatching mice?
You're right about the fpe& range on the .30 cal at 950 fps. A 44 grain pelletat 950 fps is 88 fpeat the muzzle, with just about 50 fpe left at 100 yards. Thats a lot of power for a GS ,& i dare say even for a possum or coon, to shake off & walk away from unfazed.
It shouldn't take much to get those jsb pellets to 950 fps either. Shot count will drop from their 21 to somewhere about 12-15 & thats still a lot for such a small reservoir.

The TJ's .30 cal barrel that Sean and I designed is NOT choked, and Tim didn't mention choking his, so I would really doubt that he did.... Hatsan barrels up to .25 cal ARE choked, no idea about the new .30 cal Hatsan....

thats interesting, I just got off the phone with Tim and he said that his barrel was choked? The reason why it is important to me is to shoot pellets, when I buy a .357 the I will use cast projectiles.

Unless Tim choked it, or had it done, he is mistaken, TJ's barrels are hammer forged, and are NOT choked.... You can take that to the bank!!!.... The production, unchoked, TJ's version is a MOA or better barrel with the JSB pellets....

Maybe he choked it, Is it correct that the new ones are going to have a taper?
-
I haven't heard anything about Mike making tapered barrels.... He would completely have to change his manufacturing process.... The barrels are hammer forged over a mandel that is only a few inches long and is moved along the barrel as it is hammered into shape.... The size of the mandrel governs the diameter (and twist) of the lands and grooves....
