Title: Fans of the JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy 18.13 gr. .22 cal. pellets
Post by: HillGSA on February 21, 2015, 07:43:51 PM
Maybe this has been talked about already?

While I was loading my rifles magazine, I ran out of pellets. So I opened up a new tin of pellets that I had purchased recently ( same brand, model, and weight ) and as I continued to load the magazine, I noticed something different. Looking at the picture, and focusing on the open window of the magazine; one of the new pellet(s) I purchased recently, is on the left and one of the remaining ( older ) pellet(s) that I had in stock, is on the right. The newer pellets seem to have a different shape, with a smaller “flat spot”.

Tim,
Top picture has so much glare it's hard to see visually what you describe ?
Just as a Q ... weigh them and made sure there not mismarked 15.9's ?

Guess so long as they shoot as well no harm no foul

Same weight. Maybe a new mold or something to do with the AA pellets?

It's difficult to stand the pellets up to get a good picture.

Title: JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy 18.13 gr. .22 cal. pelles
Post by: BALLISTIC1 on February 21, 2015, 08:23:42 PM
I just received a bunch if pellets today.

My .25 Wood version Marauder is set up to shoot in .177, .22, and .25.

I am a paper puncher and hand pumper I have fired somewhere around 12,000 to 15,000 pellets through my Mrod since the first of November 2014. I shoot at a reduced power level. My rifle likes the 14.3gr Exact at about 775 FPS best. I also shoot the .25 At 775 so my dope is almost exactly the same up to 50 yards.

Although at this point I don't shoot them I ordered Heavies to have on hand. MY TALLY... I had a tin of 500 (thin), I ordered 1000 from Baker Airguns (thanks Dennis). I got 1 tin of 500 (thin) and two tins of 250 (thick) because that is what he had in stock.

I would think the thicker skirts would be inherently better because it seems they would be a little less suseptable? to damage.

The "skirts" seem to be thicker on the new ones. They shouldn't get bent as easy.

Hey Tim you can use the old stand the egg on end trick to stand those pellets up.... A few grains of salt....

Maybe the thin skirts form to the inside of the barrel easier/better, than the thicker skirts, when the xxxx psi of air hits them ?

They made the same change a while back on the .25 cal Kings.... I don't see any difference in how they shoot....

From your last picture, the skirts on the new pellets (left) are thicker than those on the older pellets (right). Let us know if you notice any change in performance.

I love the 18.1gr pellets.  They have grouped excellently in multiple PCP rifles I've tested, though I do get varied results in batches purchased at different times.  Batch A may perform beautifully in one gun and sort of ho-hum in another, and then batch B will flip it around.

By beautifully, I mean cloverleafs at 43 yards with regularity, and doling out brain shots on squirrels at 60+ yards with the same confidence that I used to have at 35 yards.

I'm not enamored with the thick-skirted version I got from PA in November because they haven't grouped as well in any of my rifles as previous ones but I'll hang onto them because they may be great in some future rifle.

JSB definitely plays around with geometry from time to time.  Sometimes those differences are noticeable to the naked eye, and other times not so much.  Some of this thick skirt/thin skirt (or shallow dimple / deep dimple) stuff can be seen in some comparison pics I took of JSB and Air Arms pellets a while back:

http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=52908.0 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=52908.0)

I've since noticed that it isn't so much a JSB vs Air Arms thing, rather those differences wax and wane.

Michael Thomas in particular has used some sophisticated equipment like an optical comparator to analyze JSB pellets and has found all sorts of subtle differences.

The moral of the story is, when you get a tin that shoots great, go back and buy as many as you can justify.

Now that picture is TELLING !!
Gotta say, if accuracy is still there ? ... thicker tougher skirts are a GREAT thing.

Looks like they started doing the same thing with the.22 that they did with the .25 JSBs, making the skirt thicker. http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=64251.msg614067#msg614067 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=64251.msg614067#msg614067)

Hopefully they will be less acceptable to the skirts getting deformed. The last batch of 18.1 I got roughly about 75-100 pellets were in horrible shape. I didn't notice the damage till I was missing easy 40 & 50yrd shots with my at44. Put some on paper & the groups were very erratic. So now till I'm through these tins I just seperate the pellets & let my boys shoot the damaged one out of the prod.
