Title: 1377 makeover
Post by: maraudinglizard on February 17, 2015, 08:36:43 PM
Just wanted to share this with everyone, I bought this pistol in 1983 and it has been rebuilt one time. I have decided to upgrade and rebuild it again.  David at Alchemy Airworks has been a big help in making sure that I have all the right parts for it. I am doing this because I hate to see an old friend laying around and not being used. So for the next week or so, old faithful is getting some new clothes.  So the adventure begins.  :D

Oh I hope you plan to give that one some classy stuff and not just the stuff we see everyday. Your old friend deserves something special. maybe some custom wood or something. I'll be watching this one.
Good Luck.

Thanks Avator. The wood bling is coming later on but for now it will have all new internal parts, breech, matching grips and forearm,  scope, and a longer barrel.

Good to see you bringing an old freind back to life.

Looking forward to the results.

Thanks Davids, this pistol has given me many hours of fun and put a lot food on the table over the years. It was my first "bb gun".
As child, I was not allowed to shoot or even touch one.  "The shoot your eye out" syndrome, broken windows, shooting things that you couldn't eat and little girls don't play with bb guns were the reason, the very mention of one in the house would bring the parental wrath upon me.
I purchased the pistol while I was in college and it has been with me ever since then.

Here's an update, it's broke down for cleaning and deburing. The trigger has been cleaned and modified so that part is ready to go. Not bad looking for being 32 years old.

Well the old friend is all dressed up and is ready for some action. The only thing left to finish the project is a TKO to keep it quiet. I will sight it in and put the chrony on it to see how much more power it has now with the flat top piston.  I kept the whole set up simple and it turned out really well. You all would be proud of me, I didn't loose the safety bb and spring, it stayed stuck to a magnet until I was ready to reassemble the trigger.

The grips and forearm were made by David Grimes of Alchemy Airwerks. I had purchased them through his Ebay store and a day later he called me wanting to know if I wanted it all to match and he would hold everything that I had ordered until they were finished. They are sold separately and the colors would have been different. It was worth the wait and great customer service! Everything on this pistol except the scope and rings is from Alchemy Airwerks. The scope is a NcStar 2.5x30mm.

Congrats and enjoy.

Nice job!  You're gonna love the way it handles. The longer barrel and heavier steel piston add just enough weight to make the gun balance nicely.0

I just recently decided to give an "old friend" a overhaul myself.
I really like the looks of yours.
What length barrel did you use ?

Thank you fellas. Here is another update.  The fps at 10 pumps is running about 570fps to 590fps with a 7.9gr. pellet, at 15 pumps it's running about 610fps to 630fps. So the power has returned to this pistol.  The picture below pretty much explains the accuracy. The smaller pic is the 5yd target and this was the first 5 shots for sighting in, the larger pic is the 10yd with ten shots in this group. This pistol shoots all kinds of pellets it's not pellet picky at all. I started at 5yds then moved to 10yds later, both were in the quarter size target zone. I will move out to 15yds and 20yds this weekend.

I stretched it out to 15yds and 20yds in extremely windy conditions yesterday and here are the results. I am still using the 7.9 grain wadcutter pellet. TKO is on order so that will tame the report down some. I have ordered a 2x7 42mm mildot scope for it as well. When I get all this installed and it will be one tough squirrel blaster again while I am deer hunting.

Post by: maraudinglizard on February 22, 2015, 04:21:48 PM
Thanks guys.  I'm still tweaking a little bit more with it, I will install a slightly heavier hammer spring to replace the original one, it's not dumping all the air from the chamber.
This will probably fix this without having to install a power adjuster. Other than that, this pistol has become real joy to shoot again. Looking forward to stretching it out to at least 40 yds.

Try the crosman premier hollow points ( CPH's). They'll do better at longer ranges than the wadcutters. They also retain more energy down range.
Title: Re: 1377 makeover
Post by: D14Jeff on February 22, 2015, 04:37:38 PM
" ...... it's not dumping all the air from the chamber ...... "

compressing the stock valve spring will help with retaining air and save the cost and time of finding a stronger hammer spring  ...... that will also increase the cocking effort .
Title: Re: 1377 makeover
Post by: maraudinglizard on February 22, 2015, 08:49:10 PM
D14Jeff, I will definitely do the compressed valve spring first for sure.

Longhunter, CPH's have always been my go to in .177 for my pumpers when it comes to squirrel hunting. They are up to bat for my next round of testing along with the JSB Exact Heavy Diabolo  10.34gr.

Again, thanks to everybody that has helped me in this endeavor.  :D

Compress the valve spring and try 10.5 Crosman Ultra Mags. If you feel the need for a heavier hammer spring, just put a washer or 2 behind the one you have as long as it don't coil lock.

Thank you, I was wondering if that was possible without getting it in a bind, the hammer spring is the original(32 years old) so it might need a little encouragement. Other than that everything else is coming together nicely.
Title: Re: 1377 makeover
Post by: longhunter on February 22, 2015, 11:12:07 PM
Kris, if you want a lighter valve spring, take your trigger spring and replace the valve spring with that. Then, you can put a lighter one in the trigger, if you want. The trigger spring is about as light as you can go, and still pump the gun without having to cock it first. I can dump 20-25 pumps and not retain any air. Another thing to do is make or buy a spring guide, for the hammer spring.  It will keep it from torquing and make cocking easier.

That's okay, the thing that I was married to would have a canary if I worked on my guns on the kitchen table, so now I have say as to when and what can be done on the kitchen table.

So here is another update, did the spring switch and fixed a small leak around the transfer port, 609fsp with crosman's hollow points at 10 pumps. The pumping is much easier now and it dumps all the air. Cocking this pistol has never been an issue with me and I am using the original hammer.  I think old faithful is ready to stretch it out little bit more. Look out 50yds here we come. Thank you so much longhunter.  :D

When we lived in the other house I worked on guns on the dining room table. Betty Lou didn't mind as long as I cleaned up. In the new house I have a gun room. I keep all gun related work confined there. I'm not much of a bird kinda guy.
609 sounds pretty respectable for the old girl. Congrats.

Thank you avator.  Here is the 50yd results, 20 shots at the target and 20 shots at the tin can full of dirt including fire ants. I borrowed the dirt from an ant mound. Hey it was just easier scoop from their pile than it was to scoop it out of my swampy, muddy yard.  I was using the Crosman Hollow Points this time.

wanna tighten up those groups?? lay the four fingers of your off hand over the top of the scope. then, place your thumb on the back of the hammer. use that to keep the gun centered on target, and your trigger hand can relax slightly. then, you can concentrate on trigger pull.

Thank you, it's a very loved pistol for sure, 32 years of it.

For those who are following this thread, a few more mods have been made. The trigger still had little play in it so I got a little creative and made some shims from plastic blowout packaging and those wide floss picks. No more rattling or play, just a nice predictable pull. The tools used were a paper hole punch, leather punch and nail clippers.  I had some brass washers that had taken up most of the slack but was not enough so the plastic shims did the trick.

Thanks guys, the floss pick was just the right thickness and width to shim between the trigger and sear. Just a touch of pliobond to hold it in place. The floss pick can be a pretty handy tool in cleaning out seal grooves and removing o-rings with out damaging them. Still waiting on the TKO and scope. The weather here has not been the greatest this weekend so shooting old faithful has been put on hold for a day or two.  :D

I hear ya Kris. I'm probly just a couple hours north of you. Bout 20 miles southwest of Troy We were out shooting last night til around 8:00 or so. The wind was the worse part. Finally just gave up and came in. Maybe better today, if not we might have to hit the 20' shooting shed. Only a 20% chance of rain. Won't be long we'll be complaining about the heat.
BTW.... you are inspiring me to reconig some of our 13XX/22XX platform guns. I only have one 2240 still in pistol form. 4 converted to bugout/carbine. We normally grab the Stalwart Beeman P-17s for pistol shooting. I recently picked up a pre-'75 MKII. I resealed it and it stopped leaking but I have more work to do, It's still way down on power. I think I know the problem.

I am so tired of the rain, my property is partially underwater again. I can't even get a garden down right now.  My 30 and 70 yard ranges you have to wade around in them with rubber boots. I will never complain about a drought again.  I have been wanting to shoot all weekend and it's been drizzling the whole time, just enough to get the guns and me wet. Just not worth it.

I am about an hour and a half from Dothan. I ride the bike up that way every now and then when it's not raining.

But all and all, I have something to look forward to is getting the rest of the bling for old faithful.   :D

The TKO is still being made, it should be ready for shipping in another week, it just depends on how many orders they have to fill before mine.  The scope is here and I am waiting on the rings to mount it.  So for now I will be testing different pellet weights in it.
I have the Daisy 717 and the Hatsan model 25 supercharger pistols to keep me busy for now.

The TKO has arrived and installed, what a difference it made. Installation was easy and no pellet clipping at all.  This is going be one quiet squirrel whacker next season in the stand. Also tested the trigger pull, its holding at 5.5lbs and that will work for me. Still waiting on the scope rings to get here to mount the new scope.

Thank you Froghunter, I am having a blast with it. The scope rings should be here tomorrow and if weather permitting I will be able to sight it in.  I had chance yesterday to test the JSB Match Exact Heavy Diabolo 10.34gr pellet.  At 10 pumps they were averaging 550fps, at 15 pumps they averaged at 600fps and were spot on at 20yds.  The scope that will be mounted on this pistol is an AIM Mil-Dot Reticle 2-7x42 Pistol Scout Scope 30mm, Long Eye Relief, Green Lens. I purchased it off of Ebay.

Went right to the 50 yard mark, no more up close and personal target practice, let's see what this pistol really has under the hood. So here are the results. With the advice from Longhunter on holding methods, I managed to tighten up the groups.  Middle target group is the first round with 20 shots, the lower left group is the second round with 10 shots.  I was using JSB exact heavy diabolo 10.34gr pellet at 10 pumps.

Good evening, Old Faithful had a small set back over the weekend. I had experienced some power loss with the new piston. First noticed it when I was pumping the pistol, that got real easy all of sudden and the usual creaking sound had stopped, then when I was shooting down range I was mowing the grass instead of hitting the target. To make things short, I found that the piston cup was not flaring out enough to engage the pump tube. Keep in mind that this is a 32 year old pistol and there is going to be some wear and the tube may be just a little bigger. I checked the cup and there was no damage that would have caused any air loss.  So my solution to this problem was to shim the inside of the piston cup. I used a Dasani water bottle, cut a strip from the textured area and made one loop inside the cup with just a very tiny overlap to keep it even. The strip sits just below the cup edge and will stay there without any adhesive. The texture in the plastic strip made the cup flare out to make contact but not to much were I could not install it in the tube, it allowed the air to fill the cup like it was designed to but give it support as well. Here are the chrony results before and after. Everything is back to full speed again.

First installed
  Crosman hp 7.9gr          609 fps   @ 10 pumps
JSB exact heavy 10.34   550 fps

Before the shim
  Crosman hp 7.9gr          576 fps   @ 10 pumps
JSB exact heavy 10.34   520 fps

After the shim
  Crosman hp 7.9gr          615 fps   @ 10 pumps
JSB exact heavy 10.34   560 fps

Good job Kris. I had a similar situation with an old pumper. As a quick fix i stuffed dental floss in the same area you put the plastic... I had the same good results. Eventually replaced the cup seal.

Thanks Avator, since this a new piston cup this kind of failure should not be happening. After a few emails and phone calls with Davio, we both came to the conclusion that I may have on a rare occasion a slightly larger diameter pump tube and possibly some of the newer pump tubes may be that way as well. Basically no 2 pump tubes are going to be the same.  These cups are coming from Crosman and are replacing the black and solid white cups that were not holding up very well.  The clear ones are designed to last longer and not break down. Davio thought that was a very ingenious way to fix the cup. With that solution, Davio can help his customers fix their piston cups if they have that happen to their pistols. So hopefully in the next day or so I can get back to business with Old Faithful.  :D

Kris, if  you continue to have trouble with the cup you might try a different style piston.

Roy uses a double o-ring design with wipers and the o-rings are replaceable. Plus you can adjust the length with the o-rings removed for a more precise fit.   I wish I would have gone that route.

I know this is an older thread but wanted to say thank you Kris for posting a link to it.
I just read the entire thread and what a great job you've done!
Judging from the timeline you posted on getting  Old Faithful, I think you and I are the same vintage... I just took a 30 year hiatus from airguns.
Lot of good info here for the this noob with a new PC77 to play with. The Spring swap is something I hadn't read before.
Hope my results are even close to yours. CONGRATS!

You're welcome. Glad that the link has helped answer some questions for you. Search 1377 and you will find that there is a great amount of information on them. Welcome to the GTA. :D

Very Nice.

Yep, Old faithful is still going strong. I will be back to showing it some love over the holidays, the yard work is done for now, time to spend time with the air gun children.
