Today, I hit a soda can twice from 147 yards. I know this is nothing for most but it is for me. I am an average shot and have been working really hard at my 100 yards shots at the range. Today, instead of the range, I went out to the desert. I brought a bunch of cans and plastic bottles and sat them down at different intervals, up to what I thought was 100 yards, give or take. I was guestimating 50, 75 and 100 yards ranges. I shot my Talon Tunes .25 Condor, Hawke 6-24 scope, zeroed at 60, from a prone position with the rifle on a bipod. The gun shoot's JSBs at 950 fps. I used the scope's parallax to estimate the distance and chairgun for holdover. According to my scope, the can was at about 150 yards and not the hundred that I thought. I gave it a go, just for the *(&^ of it and nailed the can twice. 10 shots total, first seven missed. The next two nailed the can center mass. The last shot missed. I took out my range finder and it was 147 yards. Anyways, I have never landed shots like that ever. I'll keep shooting and next time will try at 200.

Way to go cluny, that's some fine shooting. Next time take some pictures to share. I grew up in Phoenix and went out into the desert all the time, loved it. Now I live in the woods of Northern Alabama and love it even more. But it is hard around here to find somewhere to shoot 150 yards unless it is under plow or covered with asphalt.
Anyway, I for one would like to see some pics of your rig and shooting location.

Shooting long range with airguns sure is a HOOT. Glad you are starting to like it. Its a challenge and its sure fun. The overall accuracy of airguns and projectiles and shooting techniques with airguns have come a long way..............
Enjoy

Nice shooting! Best ive done is 115 with my 470. A can is a small target ate 147.

I remember seeing your 100+ yard shots on you-tube with a .177 springer. Impressive do you have the link?
147 yards is very good shooting. A good rifle is needed for consistent long range shooting or it gets frustrating/stressful fast. Take a look at this 300 yard airgun video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvjHfL3wVlM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvjHfL3wVlM)

I will as soon as a go back. I live in California City, CA. Dead smack in the Mojave desert, next to Edwards AFB. There are miles and miles of open desert around me. Right out of my back yard, there are about 100 square miles of sparsely populated desert teeming with rabbits and coyotes. I don't hunt since my philosophy is you kill it, you eat it. I won't eat a coyote and am too scare to eat a rabbit since apparently they carry parasites. Anyways, I have to drive outside city limits to shoot, which is only 10 minutes. Once you get out there, it's open desert 360 degrees. Great place to set up targets and practice range estimation and holdover. I currently shoot the most my FX Boss and Talon Tunes Condor.
Will definitely post some picts next time I go out.

You are so right, it's like doing math but fun. I actually enjoyed shooting at random targets more than the range rest with fixed targets at known distances.

It is, I was so surprised when I hit it with a .25 that I had to post about it.

WOW! Amazing shooting, period. Also, if you consider it was windy and he was shooting a .177 pellet, even more Kudos.

Ok I was going to begin a thread about this very thing. Nice shooting! I enjoy the long range (at least long range to me) stuff. Yesterday, I had a good day. I got my longest shot with my Hatsan AT44long in .25, It was 137. I got the can 2 out of 3 shots. Pretty good for me. Those were my longest shots so far with the Hatsan. It is an underrated gun.
I got out the CondorSS in .25 next. My longest with this gun is 171 yards. I walked it out to 201 yards lasered from my truck. The first two shots missed, as I was obviously over estimating the holdover. The next shot was the right height, but just left. Fourth shot I hit it dead center. We re-set it and it took ten shots to hit it again. I hit the rock it was on once, and just skimmed it a couple of times. Hit it dead center on the last shot. I began with a 9+ mildot holdover, and 2+ dot to the left to account for the crosswind. By the tenth shot, I was at 10+ holdover to account for the lower velocity. I have to say, it was pretty cool. Below are some pictures of the area I shot at.

Oops. Sorry about the double post. Maybe someone can delete it?

Known distance shooting is a must IMO. It is the way that you find out what is the gun, and what is you. One one establishes capability and confidence in equipment, marksmanship is all that's left. Looks to me like you have equipment that is capable and that you are developing the confidence. Now it just requires more trigger time. Tethered shooting helps a ton to, consistency is king when you go long.

Heres a link to the youtube video. Its long. I didnt have any video editing skills or software back then.
Great shooting guys! I love to long distance shoot. Being out in the desert was fun when i lived out in yuma and el centro. You could shoot in any direction once you got out far enough. Post up some pics or video! Got some slomo on youtube also. Pretty funny stuff.

Doug and I have been exchanging e-mails regarding a .257 I want. He mentioned that you guys made a video in Palmdale. Let me know next time you are around my neck of the woods, would love to shoot the Talondor.
-
Yep, palmdale is closer to me than Mojave. Its more convenient for when i want to do a quick test or shoot or film a video of long range shooting. But i used to go to Mojave dessert EVERY WEEKEND and hunt rabbits with a few buddies.
I will let ya know. Probably next weekend since this one is Valentines weekend......

what kind of scope is that? most have just 4 mil dots

The scope is a UTG Leapers 4-16X44 SWAT scope. I like it a lot. I have a 3-12X44 for my Hatsan. At those distances, the reticle is a little thick though.
Cluny, I train hawks and falcons, and hunt with them. I grew up in Yucaipa between San Bernardino and Palm Springs. I would go out to California City to trap prairie falcons in the fall. We would hunt Chuckar on the buttes out there as well. You could always see how far California city was when you got just past four corners from the two big buttes out near the city. Once when climbing around on the rocks out there the stealth bomber flew over with a couple of smaller jets on the sides of it. It was pretty cool. Later that day, while in town filling up at the gas station, a giant boom shook the windows of all of the surrounding buildings. I just about soiled myself. The locals didn't react. I realized that it must have been the bomber breaking the sound barrier. The guy in the store just laughed. Hard to forget California City...
