Title: Galation noise level
Post by: straightup on January 29, 2015, 10:58:09 PM
 Hi Everyone
Just bought a new Galation .22 walnut (not the QE version) - thanks Midway. Shoots about 935 fps average using 21 gn Barracuda Match yielding 41 FPE - not bad! Also I shot a 1.5" group at 50 yards using same pellets. Surprisingly the Crossman Premier 14.3 gn were all over the place - maybe too fast?
I am really happy with it apart from the noise - its really loud. Probably louder than my .22 rifle with supersonic ammo. Nearest neighbors are hundreds of yards away but I don't want to upset them. What do you recommend which won't effect accuracy or power?
 Thanking you in advance.

Hi Ron, reach out to Bwalton (another GTA member). I think he can help you with the Galation noise.

Hey Straightup,
So you're the one who got the only .22 a few weeks ago for $643 :D
That's the one I wanted, but I couldn't pony up the needed cash, so I got the .177 caliber instead.  See my post below about tuning the Galatian ;)
Two separate things would help:
1) Plug (5) of (6) valve holes so the gun isn't such a air hog.  The gun doesn't efficiently use it's air supply "out of the box", that's why it's so darn loud (literally blowing excess air out the bore each shot).  Plugging the valve makes the gun more efficient, wasting less air, reducing noise and increases your shots per fill.
2) Contact BWalton as smythsg mentioned as #1) only helps so much and is necessary from an functional/efficiency standpoint.  #2) is necessary because #1) is not enough to remove the noise :o

Send It off to Hatsan USA and get the QE upgrade $100 , which Is what I was going to do , but Im going to wait for the QE walnut version , hopefully in April.

Hey Straightup,
What Jon suggests is a good alternative to an screw on LDC.  I prefer to have the LDC option or not, which the QE doesn't allow for.
Most Importantly, ALL Galatian Owners - need to make their gun more efficient "out of the Box":

When I first shot my gun, the noise not only hurt my ears, but the blast moved my 5"x 5" paper target form 30 feet away :o.  That's how much air the gun wastes.  You'll be filling this gun all day long if it isn't made more efficient.  Since I pump, this couldn't continue when the fix is so simple :P

My Two Cents................

Sorry Spiralgrove - yes I bought the one you were after. Hatsan PCP's with walnut stocks and in .22 are not that common especially at a good price. I was happy with Midway seeing that they gave me credit on the Hatsan 135 that I bought earlier.
Thanks for all replies. Just screwing on a silencer is not going to make much difference. Best advice is to send it to Hatsan for modifications.
Thanks for all your helpful and kindly replies. I let you know how it goes.

Thanks Don,
I just didn't want to pay that much for the gun.  $600 + was more than I was wiling to spend.  Hopefully you got a nice one :D
Enjoy.........Good luck with the QE.

Hey Guys,
The only thing needed to bring the Galatian's noise level down is to plug (5) of (6) valve holes as discussed before and reduce the hammer pre-load, turning clockwise until you're happy.  The gun comes from the factory with the pre-load adjustment unscrewed out almost half way, increasing tension on the spring.  Lessening this spring tension will lower the guns velocity, increase efficiency and give a longer shot string.  Remember, lessening the spring too much can decrease velocity to 450 fps or more.

 Hi All
My Galation was just returned to me by Hatsan. I accepted your wise words and had the shroud and silencer installed by Hatsan for $99 + $10 return postage for original case. The modified Galation is 6" longer and will not fit in the original case.
The difference is dramatic - no longer hurts my ears. More of a "click" than a "POW". Definitely more neighbor friendly. My wife who was working inside the house could not hear it.
Don't know how it effects muzzle velocity or accuracy but I would be surprised if there was any change.
 Thanks Hatsan.

Good to hear the noise level is down.  Let us know how it's shooting.

In the UK we just fit a can onto the 1/2" UNF 20 TPI thread on the end of the barrel for about $45 and it resolves the noise issue instantly.

No need to return the rifle to the manufacturer and you have the option to remove it whenever you want, so it slides back into the case with no problems.
