Title: Chronied HW90(.22) 8 pellet types
Post by: Sandaholic on January 25, 2015, 10:05:59 PM
I have maybe 300-400 pellets through it so far. I found it interesting that when I looked up the FPS for it AOA stated 860 FPS.......and the highest I saw today was 861.6. Pretty darn close.

Wondering if it is normal for pellets to group but change POI varying with pellet type?

Shot 8 different pellets 10 each at 10yards

H&N Barracuda 19.09

JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy 18.13
Low FPS 747.1    22.48fpe
High FPS 757.5   23.11fpe
Avg FPS 753.2    22.84fpe
Shot 1-1/4" high

Earlier I shot the JSB 18.13's pretty well. I used them to sight in the Hawke 4-12x50 ao ir mil-dot scope. They were also shooting a bit hotter? Not letting this drive me crazy, but I do find it odd. I'm curious to see what happens when I try to stretch out the yardage. In case anyone wonders I optically centered the scope before mounting it. And I do understand that it might take a bit to settle down and also some of that could have been shooter error (but they were grouping?). I also had a piece of witness tape on the scope to see if it moved.

Seems like my rifle likes the cheaper Crosmans so that's a plus!

I also ran a few pellets from the HW30s(.177)

Crosman Premier Super Match 7.9
Low 571.5 FPS
High 592.2 FPS
Avg 578.19 FPS

Seems normal. Can't wait to put a scope on this one as well! I have an old Leupold 3x9 Vari-X II that should do nicely.

I'll try to edit in at least one pic.......I know everyone likes pics!

I've see the POI change with the pellet type and with the velocity at 50-60'.  I think it is caused by the difference in velocity and spin of the pellet.  It might be interesting to plot the distance and angle from the aiming point on a single target or paper grid to see if you can see an impact of velocity.  A quick run through your data shows that the higher velocity pellets are shooting closer to the point of aim than the lower velocity pellets.    It might also be instructive to plot velocity vs pellet weight.

I saw something similar with some of mine but didn't study it to see if it really makes sense.

I assume that you meant that the energy delivered was higher - when you said 18 gr pellets were shooting hotter.  Their velocities were a bit lower than some of the others.

Cheers

I meant they were hotter (higher velocity) when compared to themselves. I shot maybe 75 of them earlier.
A string of 25 showed
Low FPS 744.6
High FPS 781.4
Avg FPS 768.4

very decent numbers all the way around.

for small/medium game, it WILL deliver the goods.

I've rolled small game (California ground squirrels) at a measured 73 yards with the 20...

and yes...the pellet size, weight and style can affect POI especially at longer ranges.

I've experienced the same thing with all of my Hatsan 125s in .22 & .25 caliber at 25 yards which is why I finally settled on the JSB Exact Heavy 18.13 & Beeman/H&N Crow Magnum 18.21 in .22 & the similar JSB Exact King 25.39 & Beeman/H&N Crow Magnum 26.23 in .25 as both pairs have very close POIs. Also happen to be one of the most accurate pellet pairs that I've found. At least out of the Hatsan/Walther .22/.25 rifles I've used them in. At 25 yards. Or less. Don't expect the Crow Magnums to be that accurate much past that range.
