Crosman 101, made in the 30's.

Ding Ding Ding... We Have A Winner. Tell him what he's won Johnny....
Yes, it's a .22 cal Rochester. The seller (and I trust very much) said he chonied it yesterday at 6 pumps and 500 fps. It might need a bit of help by way of secret sauce.... we'll see.
Listen... buying, owning, tinkering and shooting these old guns don't even compare to meeting and talking with people along the way. Mr. Larson is a joy to talk with. A true adventuresome boy in an elderly man's body. Another member (I'll let him identify himself at his own will) hooked me up with his 70 year old uncle who shares our addiction. He buys and sells on Gun Auction. He collects and tinkers. It's funny you mentioned Apache because I had my choice of guns and I chose the Rochester over a non-shooting Kesler and 2 Apaches. One wood and one plastic stock. I am pretty sure it wouldn't take much to make them shoot but as it goes... a bird in hand...... I don't feel compelled to say what I paid for the gun but I can assure you it was very close to the 140, 1400 and 180s that are available today. Another addition to my older pumpers was realized today and who knows... maybe next week... an Apache.

Dang it Kirby.. I should have made it one guess per member.... lol

Very nice find and it sounds like you got it for a decent price 8)

I knew it was not a 101, though I had no idea what it was.
I am guessing that these are clones of the Crosman 101?

Yep, as Mr. Larson said... I got the friends and neighbors price. I am happy.

from what I read. not so much clone as a direct intent to compete and if it weren't for lack of proper marketing, more than likely would have succeeded very well. Everything in the gun is made with hardened steel... built to last.
-
Made 1 year and 1 year only... the only gun Monroe Gasket ever made. 1948. Kessler then bought them out and produced the gun for 2 years and closed.

Way to go !!

while I applaud your good fortune, I hope that it does not turn around and bite you in the keester. from all that I've heard about the Rochester, and that isn't a whole lot, they are a pain to repair, and, once repaired, don't stay that way for long. dennis baker has one on gunbroker, and reiterates this point, as well. in fact, he has his listed as a nonfunctioning collectors piece. I truly wish you the best of luck, with your new acquisition. should it ever become necessary to rebuild it, I wonder if 101 parts would interchange???

;D Very nice find! Are you going to fix her up and keep her as a shooter or leave the old girl as is and just admire her? Ok, Bill when you run out of room I know for a fact that you will PM me about that 392 that is taking up valuable wall space and I'm positive that if it was to end up in my man cave I will see a whole lot more use since my collection although varied is much smaller ;) ;D ::)

Yeah Scott, like I said, Dennis told the older gentleman that I got the gun from about the pitfalls of the Rochester. He, in turn, told me what Dennis had said. I understand that Monroe Gasket Co. (albeit possibly underhandedly) enlisted some of Crosman's designers and developers for building this gun. (according to Trev's page, quite interesting to read) What I do know is, it's a shooter now and has not been tinkered with. I will know a lot more when I get my hands on it but, it's my feeling that 101 spares won't work in it. I read somewhere that the check valve is a ball bearing on a spring and this tends to be the weak link in the design. If I'm to understand it, the ball bearing seats on a rubber seal. I'm hopeful that Timmy's Secret Sauce will be the "V8" this old girl needs. It will be interesting to say the least.

Don, Don, Don... my mis-guided young friend. To hang one of these on a wall and not shoot it would be tantamount to putting me in a rocking chair and taking all my toys away. lol I'm going to put a lil secret sauce in it and hope that revives it a bit. Mr. Larsen assured me that it is a shooter, maybe a bit tired , but a shooter.
So, I read your post and thought to myself.... I like this Don Palumbo guy, in a lot of ways he reminds me of myself. And I think.. the guy wants and deserves a 392. And I have an opportunity to make him a very happy guy. And to this I say.... Are you flippn nuts? My 392's ain't goin nowhere buddy !!!! ......... LMBO

;) ROFLMBO !!!! Can't hate me for making a suggestion besides this way I can continue to hope you stop into another pawn shop and find another gem 392. Just maybe you will take pity on a fellow AGer and send it my way. All kidding aside I wish there were places like that in the wonderful state of NY in the County of Nassau ;D
