Title: FX Monsoon or FX Revolution?
Post by: NJMevec on January 10, 2015, 05:35:17 PM
I'm looking to get a semi-auto PCP air gun. I know there's a lot of controversy on these being air wasters or whatnot, but to be fair I don't really care lol. I'm going to off all of my paintball stuff and other air gun stuff and probably a bunch of other belongings to fund the purchase of this gun. Which one is better? I don't really see any reviews on either. Are there better semi-auto air guns? Please help!

Check Ted's Holdover on youtube for a review of the the revolution.  Very positive; he even shoots some pidgeons in flight!  I think habanero69 has a revolution for sale in the classifieds.  I don't know why the semis aren't more popular.   Price maybe.

No trades :( Not sure how fast I can off all of my other stuff but Revolutions seem to pop up about once a month. Going to off all of my paintball stuff and hopefully that will bring me up to all of what I need.

I own a Monsoon in .22 cal. It's a very accurate gun and gets 36 shots on a fill. The nice thing about the Monsoon is it's very quiet because the barrel is shrouded. Not sure how quiet the Revolution is but it does get a lot more shots per fill.

The Revolution isn't mouse fart quiet, but it's not too bad. The 500cc air bottle is good for at least 60 shots.

I had an older with the pre smooth twist LW barrel :), and the longer air tube with gauge.  I had absolutely no trouble with it NEVER failing to cycle.  It sounds like an electric staple gun.  IN four years I only had to replace 2 orings the fill port and barrel breech oring.  In my view the Monsoon is quieter and more reliable that the Revolution.  I must warn you they are not bench rest rifles.  That said the accuracy makes it a highly effective tree rat killer.  Its definitely a consistent and accurate hunter.  There is something to be said to double tapping a tree rat off a branch without breaking scope picture.  I got 36 shots (3 mags) in .22 cal at 29.5 FPE in the good part of shot curve.  PLENTY of shots for a hunter accuracy is there so that's 36 dead animals

I would say if you have to have one do not buy directly from AOA but from somebody like https://www.precisionairgunsandsupplies.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=30 (https://www.precisionairgunsandsupplies.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=30)

Jim and Nancy are good people and will be the ones to deal with importer if you have out of box troubles arise.  On out of box failures too many times AOA end up giving the customer the run around on satisfaction.

Also Jim and Nancy are GTA vendors which support us and ensures they have FAIR ETHICAL business practices....there is a reason AOA is NOT LISTED as a GTA vendor.

I second checking out TedsHoldover on youtube. He does a pretty good job of reviewing. I personally have always wanted the revolution, but thats just personal preference.

Hi Nathan,

I own a FX Revo 22 cal for about three years now, and had no problems what so ever ! Minimum maintenance on the gun mostly cleaning the shroud and return tube every 4000 rounds or so, don't use lube pellets. The ST barrel I clean it with a PatchWorm if the accuracy falls off, other then that it needs no cleaning ever. The gun is all that you pay for and more. IMO all guns have their pros and cons the Revo to me is a bit on the loud side and I have mounted an LDC on it with good results....Polymag don't fit into the mags.... Extremely accurate, about 1/8" more that my Edgun Matador 22 cal (sold) at 50 yards distance with 16 and 18 gr JSB. The Revo seems to like JSB 16 gr (@930 f/p/s) over the 18 gr (@890 f/p/s) and my favorite Polymags do not fit in the mag it's to long, max length to fit mag is .38". I bought the single shot tray for the FX 400 and use that instead of shaving the tip down on the Polymag like some owner do. If you are thinking of getting one I recommend you get extra hi scope mounts to clear the mag and the scope mid joint. Like the Soportsmatch HTO71 is for 30mm tube dia and is extra hi. I'm using BLKs hi mount and it's a little to short so I have to place the scope on ether side of the mag to clear scopes mid joint. Extra mags the gun comes with only one, so order 5 more. Some extra breech seal o rings, this seal will also fit the FX fill probe (009, A90 Durometer), it's the same size. Fill to ~220 bar after 6 mags used that's 72 rounds down to ~170 bars. Don't shoot below 150 bars, it will cause the breech seal to blow out. A very common mistake among new Revo owners is to keep on shooting, this gun is fun and hard to stop. Then they tinker around for weeks to mouths trying to figure why the gun stop cycling ! In the process even ruin the gun and then shipped it back, never knowing that the breech seal is missing.

I never emptied the air tank, always filled to 160-220 bar. DO NOT ever fire the Revo without a filled air tank ! You will ruin the trigger reloading mechanism ! I don't even remove the tank from the gun to prevent this from accidentally happening. Some new owner dry fire the gun when they first received it thinking it's okay to do, don't! Fill it first thing !!! If so you will need to send it back for servicing it's a finely tune piece of work and very hard to work on let alone get new parts from Sweden.

After I shoot about 4000 pellet I will do a thorough cleaning out the shroud with a rag and or Q tips wet with denatured alcohol. I mark off the barrel where the shroud begins with a piece of tape on each, and mark off the rotational position also. Loosen the two hex nuts on the top of the shroud and you can pull it straight off the barrel. The elbow on the bottom of the shroud has a short rubber tubing connected to it will slip right out of the return tube beneath the barrel. This is meant to be floating and easily wobbles it's suppose to be that way, some owners think it is loose and broken, it's not. I then clean out the return tube with a cleaning rod and patches slightly moisten with denatured alcohol. Wipe out all excess condensation from alcohol with dry patches. Clean out elbow area the same way and return shroud to the tape and marks made earlier.

That's some really good info for anyone interested in buying a Revolution or Monsoon. My Revo has the "pre-smooth twist" LW barrel & it is extremely accurate with absolutely no issues with shot cycle. Never jammed once. It does real well shooting 18.1 JSBs.

Hi Nathan,

I'd buy it from AOA because they can service the gun if you have problems in the future, being that there the sole importers of FX.
I'd save up and get a new one with the ST barrel, it needs to be cleaned once.
It will retain it's accuracy even after 10,000 + shots with no cleaning !
Lately I just clean out the shroud, elbow and the return tube under the barrel more often then I clean the barrel.

The single shot tray I bought that fits the Revo, just make sure you select the right caliber when ordering.  http://www.precisionairgunsandsupplies.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=fxsst (http://www.precisionairgunsandsupplies.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=fxsst)

This is Teds latest on HIS Fx Revo 22 ST, and they all shoot as good if you ask me. Do try the JSB 16 gr also it's a tad better then 18 gr. Buy a lot of pellets your going to need it, it's a real blast to shoot !!!!!

p.s. you seem to have your heart set on a True Semi Auto and it sounds like this will be your first PCP airgun ?
If not, a KalibrGun Cricket 22 standard is a great buy and the prices has got down a bit at AOA. But if you like better service and support I'd go with WWAG, a bit more pricy but with Steve and Ernest you can't go wrong. If ya tell Steve you know me he'll more then likely to treat you extra special, just tell him Greg from Hawaii sent ya !

Wouldn't be my first PCP. First is a HiPAC'd 22xx build which I would bet any money is more finicky then any other PCP on the market. Honestly I'm even considering getting a Disco at this point. For squirrel getting and plinking (just want a second fun gun to do this with) can't go wrong with one.

Yes, that would be the cheaper way and you are free to choose.

Disco / pump is about $400 a PCP entry level gun, the Revo alone is about $1900.
Close to 5 time the cost and to get something better you need to spent a lot more but in the air gun world you get what you pay for.
It's like comparing night and day, there is no comparison between the two !

You don't have to take my word on it, Ted can say it better.

I have both the Monsoon AND the Revolution along with one of the largest collections that nobody knows about haha. That said, the Revolution is hands down the better gun. I continue to see problems with the Monsoon cycling although it is lighter and super quiet (and cheaper). Summary is spend the money and buy a Revolution or find a used one in GREAT condition.
