What German springer is the best out of the box.... Needing little or no modification. Pure shooter and a pleasure to own. Accuracy trumps power in this case. What cal. would it be? Let's just say it's for plinking and backyard paper punching, but could complete in a competition if needed.
-
LOL
I'll chime in and say Helga has not been touched in the years I've had her. As far as doing ANYTHING besides adding glass and shooting. Not even an initial barrel cleaning. :)
Weihrauch HW97K in .177 in walnut stock. SMOOTH and a tack driver out of the box.

I can't speak about Diana's, but my HW30 has been the most pleasurable out of box springer experience to date. Great trigger and very accurate, and easy enough to cock to be able to sit down an shoot a tin of pellets non stop. Power level may be on the low side for (certain) competition shooting, but it doesn't disappoint.
The experience has been excellent enough, that I also picked up a R9 to cover the upper power levels, and that is proving to be a similar experience. A HW50 would slot right between, if wanting middle ground. I don't feel the need for a tune on them, but available parts and services, make it possible to take them to the nth degree for competing if desired.
(all .177 above)

My Diana280 was excellent out of the box even though it was the Canadian version, terrific accuracy and when I took it apart the insides were very clean and the lubrication was where it should be in what I consider the right amounts. If I wasn't such a tamperer I could have left it alone and been very happy.

Ready,
I kind of perfer my Beeman Model R11/ HW 98 air rifle in .177 caliber.
Enjoy,
Froghunter
-
Both of my Diana model 48 rifles were awesome. Tuning just increased the awesomeness.

-
;D My D34P is a nice shooter but a previous owner had it tuned by a pro so that doesn't count I'll chime in about my soon to be here RX2 one I get some trigger time it is practically new out of the box ~200 pellets down the spout by the original owner
-
Hands down the Walther LGV. I doubt anything out there that will match the accuracy right out of the box. It does take a few hundred rounds to break in, but after that you have a rifle that shoots like one pro tuned.
-
I have 5 HW's and 3 Diana's. All are accurate but none have been shot out of the box. You find an excess/lack of lube, nicked seals, metal shavings and with my 77, a barrel shim between the action and stock.
The reality is if you want accuracy and longevity tear them down and address the short comings of all mass produced guns. My advice is get the one you want and spend some time cleaning them up. It is not rocket science. There is no big mystery to them. Do it right, do it once, and enjoy peace of mind and an accurate, consistent, quiet gun for years.

Ill second that and add the LGU to the list.
-
for a "Springer" i'd have to say the RWS Diana model 48/52
-
Depends on your definition of best and what you plan to do with the rifle, but if you're not after velocity, another vote for the HW30S (aka Beeman R7). Has to be the sweetest little springer ever made. Maybe not a competition gun put of the box, but anyone who loves springers can't help but fall in love with this one.

X2!!
Love that rifle!

these three for me. Walther LGV, HW 30s, and Beeman R6, have not shot my HW 35e enough to add to the list.

My LGU 177 defies the laws of physics and shoots at 50 yds into a .3 hole. scope does not get loose not hold sensitive etc. I know the other rifles mentioned are very good but for $509 the LGU is the best for the money and even more money. I wish I would have gotten the LGV when AOA had then for 299 really a steal
-
I paid considerably more than $299 for my LGV Master Ultra and I'd do it all over again. And I hope my LGU groups as well as yours. I won't be able to shoot it at more than 14 yards for a few more months. Winter is a bugger around here.
-
R9 if you can live with the spring vibration. It does not affect accuracy, so I think it is a brilliant German springer. My RWS 460 was awfully good out of the box if you like a magnum underlever.

+1. Accurate thumper right out of the box(mine was a refurb. for $299). Vortek kit was the icing on the cake. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the rifles suggested.

Hw30, 97, LGV all are excellent.
-
I have had 4 German springers. The HW97 was the best out of the box. A close 2nd was the 34 Compact.
-
"Best 'out of the box' German Springer" -- that's a broad topic. First Weihrauch has owned the reputation of best German springer for a long time. Walther now has the LGV and LGU rifles and they are very good, too. It would be one of the two. The next issue to resolve in the equation is how much you want to spend. If it's less than, say, $500, plus perhaps a scope, then perhaps you might want to consider some of the HW break barrel rifles. If there is no limit then it would be between rifles such as HW77/80/97/98 or the Walther LGV or LGU. All of these do not require modification, are accurate, are great shooters, and would be a pleasure to own. Caliber for back yard shooting, perhaps some competition? .177 of course.
-
I would say you can not go wrong with any Weihrauch, that being said the best rifle I got out of the box was an English beauty.

Yes AOA had the plastic stock LGV for 299 wish I got one. My LGU hated heavy pellets and shot the JSB exact 8.4 better then my PCP's at 50 yds. the CPHP's did very well also.
-
97 & 98........simply amazing rifles and built like tanks!!
Kitted........even better!!
-
I thought there would be a lot more HW30 and R7 reccommendations. I am really surprised that the mid-powered guns are owning it.
-
;D No surprise there the mid power rifles offer a balanced package my D34P is a nice rifle minimal recoil and easy to cock/shoot so no surprise at all. Most shooters don't have the patience to master the magnum springers JMO so please do not hate me ;) ;D
-
Beeman R7 .177
Look at people's sig gun lines...they don't own a R7.

HW 98, gets my vote.

Thanks for all the great replies and suggestions ! This forum is a true fountain of knowledge. I have room in the safe for one more gun. With the sales going on at AoA.... I'm thinking of filling the void. I wish I'd gotten the LVG in .177 when they had them.. :'(.. I was lucky enough to get a LVG in .22 then and dearly love that rifle. Keep the suggestions coming as I haven't made any final decisions yet. THanks!!

Weihrauch HW90. Period.
Close second, Walther LGU.

I really really like my R9. It does have a little twang that seems to be settling some after several hundred shots.
It is quite accurate, and it is, I think, one of the lightest guns mentioned so far by at least 1lbs.
As far as accuracy, it is quite good. My yard is only 80' deep, and I shoot there a lot, but it is almost boring at that range. I can typically get .25" groups shotting off sticks. That is a typical group. Some smaller, some larger...

LGV is nice

and the thread grows. But there seems to be a common theme:
HW95/R9
HW97
HW98/R11
HW90 (gas ram)
Walther LGV and LGU
AA TX200
How can you possibly go wrong with any of these? 8)

It means Germany not only rules in soccer, but air rifles as well. :)

RX2...what else, lol!

RX2...what else, lol!
I just got my RX2 .20 two weeks ago and had to waste a week on a family trip to Orlando but I was Jonesing. No AG's for a week and worse yet no GTA for a week. Now I have the fill prob and can start tuning for best accuracy and power with the best pellet overall and Wednesday I get a bunch of its favorite pellets
-
hw97
period.
i have a silverline in both .177 and .22. outstanding accuracy and all the power you could want for hunting..
just my opinion

I just found my "wish list" 8)
The only German springer I've had the pleasure of owning out of the box is the Model 34. All it needed was a few drops on the main spring because it came a bit dry. I love working on my air rifles but there was no compelling reason to open her up. I've been shooting it for over a year now, as is, and it's my favorite. It's the gold standard I use to judge the performance of all the others.

LGV Challanger in .22
I really like this large pellet, 12 ft.lb. gun!
Shoots as smoothly as any of my tuned guns (R9/.20, HW 97 in .177 & .20, ProSport/.177, RWS52/.22) without any additional costs.
-
Heckuva line up right there Fish!!
-
Thanks Joe!
Here' the .20 Beeman 97 - detuned , shooting JSB Exacts at 13 ft. Lbs
-
Her "better side"!
-
Pretty sure she has no bad side!!!
Gorgeous rifle bro!!
My 97 will NEVER leave my grubby hands!
-
;D I have to say that my almost new out of the box RX2 .20 is amazing and once I tame her a bit (less air in Spring) she may very well become my favorite springer ??? ::)
-
I hope it's a HW97 STL in .177, since I'm picking one up tomorrow afternoon! ;)
-
You're gonna love it Jeff!!!
I would NEVER sell mine bro!!
Awesome rifle!!
We gotta have pics! Good luck!
