Title: My gun confuses me... it is one picky eater..
Post by: Ricochet808 on February 02, 2011, 10:05:45 PM
So I got my pellet order in today. Lets just say I am getting some good trigger time in. I have a target at 25 yards and am going to town on it.

At first my shooting results were as expected.

First ammo on the table was the Gamo pro Magnum 21 gr. I wasn't expecting a lot out of these pellets and I was not surprised. Horrible groupings from my gun. I fired at least 20 rounds and no two pellets landed within an eighth of an inch of each other. They fit very tight in my barrel. The Benjamin Domes also fit tight and shot horribly.

Moved on to the H&N FTT 20 gr. The fist three shots made a 3/4 inch group. I was pleased, as this some what verified that ammo was playing a factor in my horrible accuracy and it wasn't just a matter of seals and my sheer inexperience with a high power springer. I continued firing the FTTs. After firing another 20 rounds the group had expanded to about an inch with about 5 rounds landing out side of 1.5 inches. Now I was wondering if I was getting sloppy, or it was again the ammo. These rounds fit snugly in the barrel.

I switched to the Beeman Kodiak. 31 gr First five rounds created a dime sized group. All the holes where overlapping. I was very pleased. I was noticing the pellets fit pretty loose in the barrel. That grouping was what I was looking for. As far as I was concerned, I suspected the ammo, but I was assuming that I was just BAD at shooting the trail XL725. After firing another 15 rounds of Kodiak and maintaining that grouping with out much excess spread I decided to switch to the Kodiaks evil twin. The Barracuda! Now this is where things get odd.

The cudas shot HORRIBLE out of my gun. I mean all over the "dang" place. The were almost as bad as the Gamo Promags. I switched back to the Kodiaks, accurate...then back to the cudas..horrible. I played around with these for a while. What I found with the cudas was that some fit looser then the Kodiaks and some fit tighter. The Kodiaks fit just "snug"

Any way, after letting the cudas play boggle with my mind for about 45 minutes I decided I had enough rounds through to determine my gun hated them. Which made me VERY VERY SAD because I had ordered 2 tins of Cudas and only one tin of Kodiaks. Go figure just my luck.

Moving on, I opened my tin of Benjamin destroyers. After shooting 15 rounds of destroyers, I don't think that tin will ever open again unless I need to break in another .25 AG. Worst grouping so far. Worse then the Gamo promags. That's sayin something. 9$ wasted.

Moving on to a new target. I brought out the H&N Crow mags. Grouping wasn't great. About an inch spread after 8 rounds.

Pulled out the Beeman Cowmags, grouping was 1/2 inch. Just like the Kodiak vs Cuda... I suppose my gun just likes Beemans better? But Beman is made by H&N?! Makes no sense to me.

Now this is an oddity that caught me by extreme surprise.  :o I opened my tin of Ram points. 20+ rounds later I am looking at a dime sized grouping. I had 3 shots that weren't in that set, and I know that's because of me. My gun loves Ram points. I haven't seen a single good review on them. Can't wait till I can get down to my friends house so I can test these out on the 40 yard target. These pellets fit loosely in my barrel. I am noticing a trend there..
Now everything has a silver lining ;D I ordered TWO tins of Ram Points by mistake. YES!

Next up, Beeman Silver Arrows. Finally ending Beemans winnings streak. Completing valiantly for last place against the Benjamin destroyers.

Going to continue my shooting for the rest of the day. Testing focused on the FTTs and the Ram Points

Kodiaks seem to shoot better than the Barracudas in all my guns that I had tested so far. Most of my guns like the kodiaks the best.

My surprise was my FX Cyclone doesn't like Kodiaks at all. Haven't tried the Barracudas yet.

You might want to try some JSB's in there also. Every gun I have likes them better. I stretch my 177 350 and 470 out past the 100 yd mark with JSB's. No other pellet I have shot will come close and I have alot of 177 pellets laying around.

Going to pick up some JSBs. I had high hopes on the H&N Cuda.

After some more shooting. The H&N Ram Point shot circles around the Kodiak for me.

My gun is zeroed with the ram point. FTTs shoot high and stray to the right. Kodiaks shoot less consistent than the Ram points. So far I haven't had a stray shot with a Ram Point that I didn't think was my fault. Had a few Kodiaks that didn't go any where near where I was aiming.

Beeman *H&N* crowmags are shooting better then normal H&N crowmags. They are still pretty sloppy.

Well, at least I have ONE pellet in the bunch that it working with me. LOL Live and learn.

Once I do some 40 yard shots and see how consistent those Ram Points are.

I am really happy I found a pellet my gun likes. Having at least one round with consistency means a lot to me. It also assures me that my gun isn't a stinkin lemon!
