The Dallas Field Target Club held its last match of the year on Saturday, Dec.13 at the dedicated airgun range at Elm Fork Shooting Complex, in west metro Dallas. The weather was wonderful, with partly sunny skies and a very non-December 65-71°.
An ideal day, except for a steady breeze, frequently gusting to 15-20mph. Combined with a thinning canopy in the trees above, there was little opportunity to wait out the wind. We’ve not had a wind like this at the range before, and the scores reflected it.
Starting at 10:00am, the usual 50-shot rifle match was shortened to 44-shots, to allow time afterwards necessary for our first ever Pistol Match, shot in building winds and moderate afternoon glare. The 40-shot Pistol match ended about 40-minutes before dusk.

Twenty-two participants contested the 44-shot Rifle match. Once again, we had four new folks shoot their very first FT match. IMO, the rookies all did quite well their first time out on a 32.5 Troyer course. Thanks to Kevin Enzian for serving as Course Designer and Match Director for this match.
Mike Vredenburg (Open PCP) and Ron Robinson (Hunter PCP) shared match high scores of 33/40 (75%), to win their respective divisions, followed by Bob Dye at 30 (Hunter PCP), Jerry Cupples 25 (Hunter PCP) and Paul Bracaglia’s 25 (Open PCP).
Terry Vanpool led a field of six shooters in Hunter-Piston with a 23, followed by Brad Vanpool’s 21… a results reversal from the October shoot when Brad won. Jeff Cloud finished third with a 16.
Robert Droege lead the WFTF Shooters with a (Piston Class) 22, followed by Scott Cotton’s 20 (WFTF PCP).
First time FT shooter Tina Gorski posted a very impressive FUN Rifle score of 61/88 (1x2 scoring). Translated to AAFTA standards, this score would have equaled a solid 20 in Hunter PCP. Great job, Tina!

In our inaugural Pistol Match, nine shooters participated with seven eventually posting pistol scores. Match high was a 33 of 40 possible (82.5%) by Bob Dye in Hunter PCP, followed by Ron Robinson’s 30. Scott Cotton finished third with a 23. Mike Vredenburg posted a 26 to win the Open PCP Pistol Class.
With each match, we gradually make improvements to the range equipment. Kevin Enzian and I were so impressed with the offhand lane Shooting Assist Stand created by Walt Roller for the Heflin Nationals, that Kevin operated from memory and a single photo to make a version for us (thanks Walt!). It seemed only appropriate that TX pistol guru Ron Robinson served as Match Director for this inaugural pistol match.

I think everyone had a great time shooting in pleasant North Texas weather, in preparation for the Holidays.
