Title: HW30/HW30s Maintenance
Post by: nick.redding on December 12, 2014, 11:16:22 AM
New owner of an HW30s here, so far everything has been perfect! That being said I don’t want to mess anything up but also want to make sure it stays near its current mechanical perfection for a long time.

Understanding that most mechanical parts require a little maintenance every now and then, do any of you long time HW30 owners have any advice for a new owner (roughly gone through about 1000 pellets without a single issue)?  Looking for things related to cleaning, lubrication, spring maintenance (if any) specific to this air rifle.

Let the aruguements begin.
Every tin of pellets 1-2 drops of CHAMBER oil in the chamber via a oiling needle.
Every 1000-2000 shots remove stock and place 3-4 drops of SPRING oil on the coils of the spring.
A few drops of SPRING oil on the cocking linkage.
Tighten all screws except the rear screw on your trigger.
Not too tight on the rear trigger screw.
Tom Gaylord reccommends oiling the chamber when the seal starts to quack like a duck when you cock it.
Rub the stock down with a rag impregnated with BLO and rub the metal down with a gun oil impregnated rag.
Check your scope mounts.
1000 shots a month is not too much for a dedicated shooter so, do this once a month.
If not once a month, do it every time you open new tin of pellets.
IMHO

Barny's advice may be more apt for Diana rifles, which have a reputation for sometimes coming from the factory a bit dry.  HW doesn't recommend oiling as frequently, certainly not for every tin.  The spring may benefit from a few drops of oil every so often, but take it easy with the chamber oil.  You can safely shoot four or five tins without chamber or silicone oil.  Do follow the advice to tighten the screws (except the trigger adjusting screw), and check them every tin of pellets.

Tune it. Proper lubes and quality seal and spring will last years with nothing more than a pull through of the barrel occasionally.

About 5 years ago, I was in your exact position. Had purchased a new HW30s and wanted to maintain it properly. Read the same debates and decided to write Weihrauch directly. I was told that the gun was lubed to last the lifetime of the spring and seal. Emphasis was placed on never putting any type of chamber oil in the cylinder or on the spring. It was good advice.

HW guns are well-lubed from the factory. Many repalce the factory lubes with quality ARH lubes. Do yourself and the 30s a huge favor - toss the chamber oil. ;)

Do check that the screws are tight, but don't tighten them so much they compress the wood.  Keep gun wiped down. I prefer Ballistol.
I also recommend ordering the lever cocking insert from ARH. It will keep the articulated cocking lever from wearing grooves into the receiver.

I have replaced the internals of all my HW30s' and R7 with ARH kits and lubes. None better.

For the record, my 30s' have seen extensive use with no problems at all. Put first !0K shots on stock springs and seals before kitting my very first HW30s.

So shoot and enjoy. When / if the time comes - install one of Mr. Maccari's tune kits and seal!

Fully agree.

I only apply moly when I need to replace the spring. That averages about once evert 20-25,000 shots or more.

Otherwise, I just shoot and enjoy.

Good springers are darn near maintenance free.

The cocking arm insert is a "must do" inmy opinion. I also like the McCarri lubes

I don't have a cocking arm insert in mine.  Mine cocks smooth and has not galled the receiver tube.  Not all '30's have the issue.

Thank you everyone for the excellent advice.

There is always a bit of debate from the manufacture/engineer(s) and the people that use them every day, that is to be expected.

As for the galling, I have not seen or felt anything yet but will keep an eye out for that.
