Title: Rate of twist help.
Post by: 454 Big Block Chevy on November 02, 2014, 05:43:36 PM
ok, i know there is a lot of information on this subject.  i know matching your rate of twist to your projectile is a way of optimizing accuracy.  Here is what i know... Faster is faster, slower is slower.  you need a faster rate of twist for a longer projectile to stabilize.  My AirForce condor has a 24" 25 caliber barrel. It has six-groove, 1:17.71" RH Twist.  It IS a choked barrel.  I have the 25.4 grain JSB pellets, and the 31.02 grain Baracuda pellets.   how can i use this information, to improve my shooting?  not necessarily from a FPE standpoint, because i have plenty.  but from an accuracy standpoint, of maximizing my one hole capability.

Thanks!

You are correct that a longer and or heavier projectile will need a faster twist to stabilize. What I do not know is what twist is required for a givin pellet weight. I am familiar with PB twist rates and what works but not air rifles. Maybe Bob or another member will have that info.

Customers of mine with your gun/barrel combination have great accuracy with all of my slugs - 31, 37 & 45 grain Spitzers.
Your twist rate is fast for pellets - the twist rate I optimized for my .250" 45gr Spitzers is a 1:22" twist (for solids not HP's as the HP's increase the bullet length).
JSB's would probably be fine in an even slower twist rate than a 1:22".
Diabo pellets aren't affected adversely by too fast of a twist like slugs are.

You could probably shoot a 50gr slug out of your barrel depending on bullet length/shape.

My 1:22" is shooting Kings into a 1/2" ragged hole @ 50 yards when driven at an average velocity of 952 fps...that's for *twenty* shot groups on pellets pulled straight from the tin!

For your twist rate you may want to try some Spitzers...

PM me your address and I'll send you a few of each weight to sample.

i'm really looking at shooting the 31 or 37 S/HP.  It would be beautiful!!!  I am looking for something i can get impact FPE of 50+ at 100 yds.  that will let me very humanely take a coyote with a body shot out to 100 yds.  my condor with the top hat and heavy hammer and long barrel could push these real fast!!!  until i get accuracy problems of course.
