Title: LVG in 22 or 17
Post by: mista meener on October 31, 2014, 10:16:47 AM
I would like to know if the power plant n the LVG is set up more for the 17 cal then the 22 being the velocity seems a little low in 22. I am looking for target shooting at 50 yds not hunting and even for that the 22 seems a little slow

17 for the flattest trajectory and best pellet choice.

For the rest, the powerplant is also developed for this caliber.

From what I've read, the LGV was intended to be a 12ft/lb gun and shoots best at that power level.  The LGV is made in 3 power levels but we get two versions in the US: the 12 ft/lb .22 and the 16 ft/lb .177.

...BTW, 600 FPS in .22 is NOT slow.  It is apparently very adequate for hunting the outside the US.  If you're just target shooting, 600 FPS is certainly enough to put holes in paper at 50 yards.

thanks for the reply. I figured 600 fps which might turn out to 550 fps being they always add 100 fps here and there lol. My AT 44 at 850 with cheap ultra mags is real accurate. that is why I figured 500 fps would be a little slow

FWIW, my LGV Master .22 gets an honest 600-615 FPS using JSB RS 13.43gr pellets.

The LGV is a superb shooting air rifle. The accuracy from this rifle and the smooth shooting behavior is what makes this rifle. Either caliber would simply be up to the individual. I have the 22.cal which shoots just about any pellet mid size around 12lbs. Personally I cannot imagine why you would need more than this for all around shooting. If not than you shoot look at the magnum rifles. ;D

I had stated that I did not want to hunt just target shoot up to 50 yds. I was just wondering which caliber the power plant was set up for. usually one rifle spring might be to fast for a 177 and another might be to slow for 22. I get wicked accuracy with my AT 44 at 50 yds at 870 fps so I was thinking the LGV might be a little slow at 50

I have not shot my .22 beyond 30 yards, the length of my back yard.

I searched online quite a bit before I got my LGV.  If you check around you'll find there are 16 ft/lb, 12 ft/lb, and 6 ft/lb versions of the LGV (the lowest powered version is for Germany, I think).  Again, from what I learned the LGV was likely designed for around 12ft/lb and the only one available at that power level is the .22.  I think the gun was set up more for a particular power level than calibre.

There dont seem to be many LGV owners on this forum, but there are plenty others on other forums, including some of the British forums and even the Weihrach forum.  I know you'd get more responses over on the Yellow.

I have. It's capable at that distance, you're just lobbing it out there as opposed to the flatter shooting .177. There is several videos on youtube with the English shooting at that distance (believe the fellows name was Si Pittaway, Vermin Hunters TV) Then again he was shooting thumbtacks with it @35yrds.

That is what I thought with it in 22 lobbing would be involved at 50 yds lol. I will watch those videos.
